1. Vision and Leadership

Sean Wise has dedicated his professional life to helping people tap into the power of entrepreneurship. With other far-sighted members of the industry, he has shaken up the traditional world of venture capital, creating exciting new opportunities for people who would never have enjoyed them in the past. His efforts have helped create jobs and prosperity not just in Canada but around the world.

• As advisor and on-line host for Dragons’ Den – the CBC’s most-watched program – he brings his passion for start-ups not just to the contestants who pitch their ideas to the show’s panel of investors, but to its more than 1.8 million viewers across the country. Based on numerous recommendations, the producers hired Sean to get the show up and running in 2006, and have worked with him ever since. The program has showcased over 500 businesses and sparked the investment of more than $25 million in Canadian deals.

• In 2008 – again, on a strong third-party recommendation – the faculty of business at Ryerson University hired him to inject real-world ideas and experience into their entrepreneurship program. His classes quickly became a magnet not just for his own students, but for others – including his fellow teachers – attracted by his dynamic and passionate lecture style.

• Sean is helping to open doors for Canada’s First Nations, a community that critically needs access to business skills and funding. In 2009, he worked with the Assembly of First Nations on a national version of the Dragons’ Den concept. The “Big Idea” program selected some 40 business ideas from hundreds submitted, showcased and trained their founders, and helped to launch and fund five new businesses. Sean has also appeared as keynote speaker at a number of First Nations economic conferences.

• Sean’s outstanding reputation in the industry has grown from more than a decade of breaking down the barriers for entrepreneurs, helping them hone their ideas and get access to the resources they need:

o He has leveraged his research into collective knowledge into creating the world’s first on-line collaborative venture capital community, in partnership with the private investor pool that gave Thomas Edison his start.

o In 2004-2008, he helped evolve the Toronto Venture Fair from a local event to a national showcase for innovation. In 2008, under its new name of the Canadian Innovation Exchange, he served as co-chair of what has become Canada’s premier gathering for key players in the innovation economy.

o Between 2000 and 2005, he took part as keynote speaker and/or facilitator at more than 100 entrepreneurial bootcamps for the founders of startup businesses. These founders went on to raise or generate more than $1.2 billion in capital.

o In 1999, he helped Ernst & Young create, launch and maintain a new line of business, the Entrepreneurial Business Centre, and served as its managing director. The centre eventually generated more than $2 million in new business, all while helping entrepreneurs succeed.

2. Innovation and Achievement

Sean is by nature an innovator, the prototypical out-of-the-box thinker. Almost all of the programs in which he has taken part, and most of the jobs he has held, did not exist before his involvement. This drive to innovate, coupled with his energy and enthusiasm, have helped Sean to accomplish a remarkable range of achievements:

• In 2007, Sean partnered with one of New York’s oldest and most respected private investor pools to launch VenCorps.com. Showcased by the Center for Collective Intelligence at MIT, this innovative site aims to revolutionize how start-ups get funded and dramatically deepen the pool of seed money available around the world. The on-line face of the world’s first community-powered venture capital firm, VenCorps has attracted more than 5,000 members, millions of dollars in funding, evaluated more than 100 proposals and invested in nine startups based on a community-driven decision-making process. The site is based on Sean’s work on collective intelligence carried out in pursuit of his doctorate at the University of Glasgow. His research, patents and algorithms form the heart of the VenCorps platform.

• Through his company Wise Mentor Capital, founded in 2004, Sean has brought together like-minded entrepreneurs from such areas as law, finance, accounting, marketing, investor relations, communications and human resources to help emerging growth companies throughout Canada with the full range of the services they need. The firm, one of only a handful in Ontario licensed to facilitate investments in high-growth companies at both the angel and venture capital level, has enhanced investors’ returns while helping emerging companies to grow and thrive. A number of the firm’s client companies have been able to go public.

• As co-chair of the Canadian Innovation Exchange, Sean came up with a variety of innovative programs, including SpeedDating for Capital, Online Voting, and an expanded “elevator pitch” competition. (An “elevator pitch” is a concise and well-practiced proposal so named because a non-expert could grasp it during a short elevator ride.)

• In 2006, working with the CBC and Profit magazine, Sean created the Pitch4Profit, a nationwide search for Canada’s best startup. This program, the first of its kind in Canada, allowed entrepreneurs from anywhere in the country to submit their elevator pitch videos over the net, allowing peers to review and rate them. His work with the producers of Dragons’ Den has generated several value-added concepts to support and enhance the popularity of this hit show, including the Armchair Dragon Contest, the Fan Choice Award, his Dragons’ Den blog, and the ever-popular Dinner with a Dragon contest.

• Since joining the faculty of business at Ryerson University, Sean has worked closely with SIFE Ryerson on several innovative initiatives that have boosted the group’s profile. SIFE is a global, not-for-profit network for university students who want to make a difference in their communities while becoming socially responsible business leaders.

• Sean’s two books and his regular column in the Globe and Mail have helped him extend the reach of his ideas to readers across Canada and, increasingly, around the world. His most recent book, How to Be a Business Superhero, was published internationally by Perigee Trade, a subsidiary of the Penguin group.

3. Impact

According to both Canadian Business and Profit magazines, Sean is one of Canada’s leading experts on raising venture capital and mentoring emerging growth companies. In a country where concerns are often expressed about the value placed on entrepreneurship and risk-taking, Sean’s passion is promoting those brave souls who start new businesses and social enterprises. At the same time, he has the knowledge and experience to ensure rigour and realism in their plans, helping to significantly increase their chances of success.

a) Impact on organizations

• Consistently ranked in the top 5% of teachers by both students and faculty, Sean has had a tremendous impact in the short time he has been affiliated with Ryerson. This extends far beyond his well-attended lectures to include working with SIFE Ryerson and helping students find jobs and internships – which he may do even better than the placement office, according to a colleague. In his pivotal role with the entrepreneurship program, Sean is helping to create a new breed of business graduate in Canada – one with both the technical and the real-world skills needed to recognize, seize and profit from new ideas. He is considered key to Ryerson’s efforts to create a first-rate business school.

• Sean’s savvy has helped Dragons’ Den to become the CBC’s most watched show and, as the chief blogger, to make the

show’s website the network’s most visited site – even more popular than the news. His work behind the scenes with the producers has also helped to generate additional revenue streams, contributing to making Dragons’ Den one of the most profitable show on Canadian TV

• Scores of start-ups, not just in Canada but around the world, have learned the keys to business success through Sean’s roles

with Wise Mentor Capital and VenCorps. The best example of this Transgaming Inc. (TSX: TNG). Sean has worked for over a decade with this video game infrastructure company, first as a mentor, then as a fundraiser, then as a board member, and for the last three years, as Chair of the Board. In 2005, Sean helped take the company public and thanks to his support, Transgaminig is now worth over $30M and employees more than three dozen staff. Recently Transgaming announced deals with several powerhouses of the technology industry, including: Apple, Electronic Arts, Google, and Intel.

b) Impact on the industry

• Sean’s efforts, especially those that leverage new media, are shaking up the world of venture capital. Such initiatives as VenCorps are shifting the way startups get funded by harnessing the wisdom of the crowd and peer production. VenCorps allows venture capitalists to see, evaluate and fund startups anywhere in the world. This is democratizing innovation on a global basis.

c) Society or social practices.

• No one talks about the Wild Wolverine of Innovation that inhabits the northern part of this continent, but Sean believes they should. Canadians have the smarts to be world-class entrepreneurs, but too few have the real-world skills or access to the right opportunities to put their ideas to work for the benefit of all. As Sean puts it, “I am trying to increase the entrepreneurial thinking in our nation one person at a time.” Through his efforts on Dragons’ Den, his books and columns, his involvement in national innovation organizations, his research and his teaching at Ryerson, he is making that happen.

4. Growth/Development Strategy

For VenCorps:

• The first years at VenCorps involved testing the algorithms and assumptions – that is, showing that thousands of people could work together to decide who to fund, and then collaborate on building those startups. In the year to come, VenCorps is looking to invest more than $5 million in startups it identifies. The company has also begun to work with the Obama administration to create VenCorps.org. Launching in 2010, it will help not-for-profits and government entities tap into the wisdom of the crowd and leverage peer production to ensure the highest return on government programs.

For the Big Idea

• While those involved intend to run the Big Idea contest for First Nations again this year, the plan is to do much more for aboriginal entrepreneurs. This year Sean hopes to expand the competition to include more mentoring and more education for the participants. He also hopes to go from 40 participants and five new business to 100 participants and ten new businesses.

For Dragons’ Den

• Sean’s hope is to continue to push the CBC to ensure that all members of Canadian society are represented on the show. To the end, he hopes that the coming season will include more students, more persons with disabilities and more members of the GLBT communities.

For the Department of Foreign Affairs

• I n 2007, Sean was appointed one of Canada’s Entrepreneurial Evangelists by DEFAIT. This role has two key components: Promoting Canada and Officer Training. The former allows Canadian Consulates to request Sean to speak at their events, events which attempt to position and promote Canada as great place to fund entrepreneurs. The later has Sean training all newly appointed DEFAIT Investment Officers twice a year. These officers are located across the globe and are responsible for promoting foreign investment in Canada To date he has done so in: Beijing; Schezwan, New Orleans, and Boston.

• 5. Community Involvement Sean notes that he was raised with the key cultural beliefs of Tikkun Olam and Tzedakah. The former roughly translates as “heal the world,” but in practice means that one should leave the world a better place than one found it. The latter refers to the range of philanthropic contributions one can make, ranging from donating money to creating work for those who lack it. The highest form of tzedakah is literally seen as “giving a person work” – meaning, he says, that it is greater to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish. Chair of the Advisory Board, Hospital for Sick Children ‘‘About Kids Health’’ website, 2006 --- present For the last three years, Sean has been the Chair of the Advisory Board for AboutKidsHealth.ca. This website has invested more than $8 million in creating medical content for parents and their sick children, using plain English, narrated videos and animated content. AboutKidsHealth is the world’s premiere distributor of pediatric health information. This information is accessed by more than 150,000 people a month from over 200 countries around the world. The site reinforces the hospital’s position as the leading pediatric facility in the world, and ensures that parents and children anywhere that there is an internet connection can access the most relevant and up-to-date information available. The board has worked to help the site develop a sustainable business model. Sean’s involvement grew from his consulting work for the website, from which he donated half of his fee back to the hospital. Co - Chair of the Canadian Innovation Exchange, formerly Chair of the Toronto Venture Fair and the Canadian Venture Forum Since 1999, Sean has freely given his time and energy to growing the venture capital community in Canada. Initially he was a member of the Toronto Venture Group, and then became as chair of the selection committee of the Toronto Venture Fair. When the fair expanded nationally and became the Canadian Venture Forum, he was asked to serve as chair. He did this for two years, until that event once again evolved become the Canadian Innovation Exchange, for which he became the co-chair. Regardless of its name, the event had the same purpose, to bring together entrepreneurs and funders in order to ensure Canada’s startups got the funding they need to succeed. In the 10 years that he has been involved, these events have showcased more than 300 of Canada’s greatest startups, which have gone on to raise more than $500 million in capital.

Synopsis 1. Vision and Leadership: Sean Wise has shaken up the traditional world of venture capital, creating exciting new

opportunities for people who could never before have enjoyed them. His efforts have helped create jobs and prosperity not just in Canada but around the world. He has brought democracy to the process of finding and funding emerging growth companies. His most prominent roles are acting as advisor and online host for the Dragons’ Den, the reality-based entrepreneur challenge that is the CBC’s most-watched program; teaching entrepreneurship in the business school of Ryerson University; partnering with a U.S.-based private investor group on VenCorps.com, the world’s first online community-based venture capital enterprise; and working with Canadian innovation networks, including those in the First Nations community.

2. Innovation and Achievement: By harnessing new media and the wisdom of crowds, Sean has brought venture capital to new corners of the globe as well as to people of all backgrounds across Canada. The innovative VenCorps.com, which relies on group action to select, fund and develop start-ups around the world, is based on his research, patents and algorithms. He has leveraged the Dragons’ Deb concept to help Canada’s First Nations identify and develop their own entrepreneurs. His two mass-market books and regular column in the Globe and Mail bring his ideas and insights to a broad market in Canada and, increasingly, elsewhere. He co-chaired the Canadian Innovation Exchange, Canada’s premier network for innovators and venture capitalists.

3. Impact: Sean has had a tremendous impact in the short time he has been affiliated with Ryerson, where he is helping to create a new breed of business graduate in Canada – one with both technical and real-world entrepreneurial skills. His role as a mentor and developer of new models like VenCorps has helped to open up the traditional world of venture capital to new participants and radically new ways of decision-making. His teaching, blogging, roles with Dragons’ Den and the Canadian Innovation Exchange, and his writing all aim to increase Canadians’ entrepreneurial spirit.

4. Growth/Development Strategy: In the coming years, Sean plans to help VenCorps continue its explosive growth and fund a range of useful ideas across the globe. He will also continue to work with the Obama administration on the launch of VenCorps.org, a similar website for non-profit and government entities that aims to achieve maximum return for public investments. He will work to expand the help provided to Canada’s First Nations through the Big Ideas competition – an aboriginal version of Dragons’ Den – and to increase the representation of all members of Canadian society on Dragons’ Den.

5. Community Involvement: For three years, Sean has chaired the advisory board for AboutKidsHealth.ca, an initiative of the Hospital for Sick Children that is the world’s premiere distributor of pediatric health information. The site allows the hospital, one of the leading pediatric facilities in the world, to share its knowledge with parents and children wherever there is internet access. More than 150,000 people from over 200 countries around the world access the site every month.

Tel 561-459-8074, Fax 561-459-8075 Monday, November 3th 2009 To the Selection Committee of the Top 40 under 40 c/o Michelle Jursa Program Director The Caldwell Partners 165 Avenue Road, 5th Floor Toronto, Ontario M5R 3S4 Dear Selection Committee, On our hit reality show, Dragon’s Den, I consider myself to be the “Merchant of Truth”. I work hard to separate the golden wheat from the unusable chaff. I’m sure this is similar at your selection committee, where you must separate the good from the great, with only the latter winning your prestigious award. Without any hesitation, I confirm to you that Sean Wise is one of the greats and should most definitely be counted as one of the Top 40 under 40 Canadians. I know this to be true, first hand. I’ve worked with Sean for almost 4 years. First on Dragons’ Den, then interviewing him on my other show and in turn being interviewed by him as part of his role as Chair of the Canadian Venture Forum. Sean is one of Canada’s great entrepreneurial evangelists. We share the view that it is only through entrepreneurship and innovation, as opposed to government grants, that our nation will thrive. But while I reserve my pontificating for broadcast, Sean takes his message to the people at a grassroots level. All you have to do is sit in on one of Sean’s two dozen annual “Lessons from the Den” speeches to not only be inspired by Sean, but to learn how through entrepreneurship, one can improve one’s own life and the lives of those around you. However, Sean’s contribution to the Canadian entrepreneurial spirit goes far beyond just Dragons’ Den. Sean is: a Professor of Entrepreneurship, the author of two business books, the Globe & Mail’s former entrepreneurship columnist, and a serial entrepreneur himself. Over the last decade, Sean has lectured to more than 10,000 startup founders, inventors and investors. His bootcamp students have gone on to raise more than $1.2 Billion dollars for their startups. Now that is economic stimulus! This is a guy with passion, creativity, dedication and leadership. This is a guy who deserves to recognized for what he is, one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40. Yours Truthfully,
