All water bearing concrete structures with high end use re-
quirements or water retaining concrete structures depend
on reliable watertightness [1] [2]. In order to achieve the
desired performance level, special precautions have to be
undertaken throughout all project phases. The structure’s
design, construction methods and materials have to be
balanced with the ambient factors. The appropriate sealing
method will depend on a complex variety of factors includ-
ing water composition, type of structure, loading and bear-
ing conditions, soil compositions, climatic influences and
the intended use and longevity of the structure itself among
many other relevant aspects.
The Max Frank engineering team will assist you in all phas-
es and our product range will enable you to deliver a wa-
tertight concrete structure that will perform to the desired
level of service.
We do not take the “one-size-fits” all approach, but offer
a diversified product portfolio to deliver proven answers to
the majority of waterproofing challenges encountered in
modern concrete construction.
Construction and expansion joints are an unavoidable ne-
cessity in all concrete structures and they are normally fully
detailed in drawings and specifications. Concrete joints in
general are preferential leakage pathways and require spe-
cial attention. Specific methods and products are therefore
needed to ensure that a watertight seal is maintained.
All our products are tested and certified to the stringent re-
quirements of the German Building Directorate (DIBt).
Injection hose systems, metal water stops, strip applied
swellable and non-swellable waterstops or FRANK water-
bars can all be used individually as the primary joint seal. In
combination they can produce a fail-safe redundant sealing
system.
Since all concrete will crack, the outer surfaces of water
bearing structures should receive an envelope seal that will
bridge the occurring cracks reliably. With the bonded Zem-
seal® membrane, FRANK offers a tracking proof, fully ad-
hered surface protection. This bonded membrane system
ensures water and vapor proofing to all basement grades to
BS 8102:2009 and DAfStb “Waterproof concrete structures”.
Zemseal® provides adequately for radon, methane and car-
bon dioxide protection of your underground structure.
[1] BS 8102:2009, BS8007 (BS EN 1992-3), [2] EN1992/
DAfStb guidelines “waterproof concrete structures”
Reliable sealing of waterproof structures
Hydraulic head
… defines the water pressure that is acting on the external retaining wall sys-
tem. A distinction between positive (water bearing/resisting) and negative pres-
sure (water retaining) is made. Most commonly, underground external walls and
foundation base slabs are exposed to water pressure bearing on the structure.
Possible sources are inflow of surface water, ranging from percolation of rain to
inundation of water from burst water mains, high water or perched water table
or temporary and fluctuating head due to soil with low permeability. All our wa-
terstop products are tested by independent laboratories to withstand at least
50 m hydraulic head.
Redundant (secondary) sealing system
… adverse conditions may require the execution of a redundant sealing sys-
tem. It is recommended to consider this multi-barrier approach for high-end
use categories (BS 8102:2009 – Grade 3/DAfStb Waterproof concrete guide-
lines – use category A – A***) generally. The secondary seal will add an ad-
ditional level of safety and provides for a designed solution for unanticipated
defects in concrete workmanship or unplanned formation of cracks. The injec-
tion hose is most suitable to be used as a redundant seal in combination with
other types of waterstops and even offers the possibility of multiple injections.

Safe sealing options for construction cold joints
The available types of construction cold joint waterstops differ in various as-
pects, such as time of installation (pre-/post pour), required embedment depth,
type of attachment (kicker/kicker-less), allowable hydraulic head, and perfor-
mance under adverse climatic and unfavourable site conditions. We offer an-
swers for all commonly encountered waterproofing challenges, with our broad
range of available systems. Waterstops, for which there are no established
DIN- or Euro-Norm-standards, will have to be tested and certified by an ac-
credited testing institution in accordance with the German Building Directorate
(DIBt) directive. All our products have the General Building Test Certificate (abP)
and are clearly marked with the conformance seal (Ü-Zeichen).
Safe sealing options for control joints
Control joints with integrated seal will prevent random cracking and allow for
economical wall pour sections in high grade use applications. Thermal shrink-
age stresses during hydration are compensated and a defined crack is induced
and sealed against water ingress. Anticipated stresses need to be accounted
for when selecting the type of control joint seal and its spacing. Twin wall butt
joints are to be designed and carried out as control joints and require a seal.
Safe sealing options for expansion joints
Expansion joints require the use of plastic or rubber type waterbars. German
standards DIN 18145 (PVC-base) and DIN 7865 (Elastomeric/rubber-base)
govern and regulate material properties, geometry and nomenclature of the
available profile types. Unregulated plastic waterbars require a General Build-
ing Test Certificate (abP). The waterbars can be fully embedded (internal) in
the concrete section or installed externally. We offer a variety of customized
solutions for the proper installation of plastic waterbars within our Stremaform®
product line. Fradiflex® coated metal waterstops can be reliably tied into and
connected to plastic waterbars, using the joint connector assembly. Expansion
joint waterbars are also suitable to seal transitions to existing concrete, using
bolted flanges.
Safe sealing options for the building envelope
Water bearing concrete surfaces should be protected, using an external bar-
rier system (BS8102:2009, Type A). Bonded membranes have been proven to
be most effective and preferred over un-bonded surface applied systems and
liners. Zemseal® is the next generation pre-applied bonded membrane system.
The product combines adhesive bond with mechanical key to concrete. It ef-
fectively prevents water migration between the membrane and the substruc-
ture (tracking) and forms a permanent unit with the fresh concrete. Polypropyl-
ene (PP) based Zemseal® is extremely durable, features a high resistance to
chemical attack, bridges cracks up to two mils and can be heat welded.

Fradiflex® controlled crack inducer
The Fradiflex® controlled crack inducer provides an uninterrupted seal between
wall sections and within bases/slabs. Additionally, elements for controlled crack
joints are used in the concreting of long wall sections.
Concrete cross sections with controlled cracks require sufficient weakening of
the concrete and of the reinforcement. The crack inducers ensure that cracks
produced will be homogeneous.
The use of controlled crack inducers in combination of Fradiflex® metal water-
stops sealing system, delivers an integral in accordance with current building
regulations.
■ Excellent inherent stability of the controlled crack inducer

Stremaform® formwork element with waterbar cage
Metal waterstops or waterbar cages (prepared for in-situ fixing of a
FRANK waterbar) are welded in between Stremaform® elements in the
factory. These elements are suitable for all types of construction joints.
Upon request, Stremaform® elements with metal water stops are also
produced with factory-made stif fening (Stremaform® strong).
■ Can also be supplied with indented joints upon request
■ Installed Stremaform® formwork elements remain in the concrete, no
stripping and waste disposal
■ Shear forces resistance of these construction joints is identical to that
obtained for monolithic concrete (Test Report by IBMB of the TU of
Brunswick)
Waterbars for constructions joints
Internal waterbars for construction joints are completely embedded in the
concrete, whilst external waterbars are embedded in the rear face of the
concrete. Both ensure safe sealing of construction joints against hydraulic
pressure. In order to guarantee a reliable bond with in-situ concrete and to
avoid water infiltration into construction joints, waterbars to DIN 18541 must
be used.
Due to their excellent inherent stability, FRANK waterbars for construction
joints can be used separately or as inserts in special support cages made
from Stremaform®.
Material: waterbar for expansion joints
Also suited for use in waterbar cages in conformity with DIN 18541 and with
factory standard.
General test certificate: No. P-22-MPANRW-1798-2

Twin wall construction panel joints are to be treated as
control joints (DAfStb guidelines “waterproof concrete
structures”, Clause 9.2(5)) and need to be carried out wa-
terproof. The crack inducing flanges of the Fradiflex® twin
wall joint seal ensure that the cracking will occur within the
panel joint.
The Fradiflex® coated metal waterstop is used to seal the
slab to wall joint and all vertical panel butt joints are sealed
with the Fradiflex® control joint crack inducer. In case of a
high water table above the ceiling level, Fradiflex® coated
metal waterstops can be used to seal the joint between
the wall top and the roof deck.
The Fradiflex® twin wall joint seal requires only two fix-
ing points (base/top) and can span the entire wall height
unsupported. This speeds up the installation time, since
there is no attachment to the outer shell necessary.

Fradiflex® twin wall – control joints
Vertical panel joints are effectively control joints. In order to induce a pre-
planned crack, Fradiflex® twin wall joint seal will cause the in-situ core concrete
to crack at the proper location. The integrated coated metal waterstop will seal
this pre-defined crack. Fradiflex® twin wall joint seals are tested to 50 m hy-
draulic head and a crack width of 2 mm.
Transitions from the horizontal Fradiflex® coated metal water stop in the base
slab are easily carried out by mating the lap surfaces and securing them with a
clamp strap.
Proprietary fixing angles (re-usable) are mounted at the top of each segment
and hold the joint seal in place during concrete placement.
There is no intermediate attachment required, since the Fradiflex® twin wall joint
seal will span unsupported over the entire wall height.
Your advantages:
■ Fast, two-fix-point installation
■ No continuous fastening to shell
■ Sturdy, self-supporting units
Fradiflex® twin wall controlled corner
The geometry of the base plate and the mounting bracket allow for a secure
seal member wall corners. The orientation of the shells is irrelevant.
Fradiflex® twin wall/head sealing
By combining both Fradiflex® metal water stop for the wall head and Fradiflex®
mounting clip for wall crown uninterrupted sealing is ensured for multitorey
buildings as well.

Intec® injection hose
Intec® injection hose systems consist of an injection hose, assorted accessories
and a full range of injection resins. Intec® can be used as a stand-alone seal or
as secondary sealing, in combination with metal, swellable waterstops or Max
FRANK waterbars to seal all construction joints.
The Intec® injection hose system has been in use for over 20 years and has
proved its value on many projects:
■ No additional sealing method is required with reduced construction
costs and shortened construction times

Intec® Combinations
Redundant sealing systems with injection hoses have be-
come the industry standard solution. The publication “High
end use of basements – building physics and indoor cli-
mate” of the German Concrete Association (DBV) considers
redundant sealing systems for buildings with premium use
requirements (grade 3 structures/use category A-A***) man-
datory. It is also recommended for applications, where the
resulting joint opening cannot be pre-determined, unknown
thermal- and shrinkage movement is suspected, or other
unforeseen displacement is likely to occur. Hence, prudent
design will call for redundant, independent and diversified
sealing systems (multi-barrier-approach).
The basic solution combines the Fradiflex® coated metal
waterstop as the primary cold joint seal with a top mounted
Intec® injection hose. It is advisable to place the hose op-
posite the water bearing side, as to prevent hose ends to
cross the primary barrier plane. Alternatively, the Cresco®
GR/BT swellable waterstops can be installed as second-
ary seals on either side of the primary metal waterstop. To
add fuel resistance to the sealing system, the use of Synko-
Flex® FR is recommended in combination with the injection
hose.

Resin Injection
Watertight sealing of construction cold joints can be accomplished by injection
of polyurethane (PUR) resins. Alternatively, acrylic resin (AC) can be used, but
it should be ascertained that this type of resin has been generally approved for
use in concrete joint, since the regulation thereof varies from country to country.
Epoxy resins (EP) can be used to structurally heal concrete cracks.
Cementitious grouts and slurries are injected to fill larger voids in the concrete
matrix.
The Intec® Premium hose utilizes patented pressure flushing technology to
allow for multiple injections of resins.
Grouting
Cement based slurries and grouts are used to fill and seal large voids and joint
spaces. Underpinning operations and difficult to place concreting conditions
tend to lead to flawed and vacuous concrete structures and require infilling.
With the use of the Intec® Cem N, a pre-planned filling of such voids can be
accomplished. The hose can also be used for general joint sealing and as re-
dundant waterstop in combination with elastomeric expansion joint profiles in
civil works construction.
The Intec® Cem N can be injected multiple times with different grouting materi-
als using vacuum technology.

Expanding waterstops are used for effective sealing of
construction joints, particularly for geometrically de-
manding joint patterns. The sealing effect is achieved
through the expansion of the waterstop upon water pen-
etration into the construction joint. Expanding waterstops
are used where new and hardened or old concrete are
joined and a construction joint sealing must be provided.
Expanding waterstops will prevent groundwater, pressur-
ised water, and soil humidity penetrating into the building.

For exact positioning, attach the Permur® PFR fixing aid (for multiple use) to
the formwork. Fixing aid additionally protects the pipe against penetration of
concrete laitance.
■ Ideal bonding of fibre cement with in-situ concrete
■ Coefficient of expansion identical to in-situ concrete
■ Waterproof material – does not shrink
■ High stability and dimensional accuracy
Use of the fixing aid has additional benefits:
■ Simple fixing of the fibre cement pipe to the formwork
■ Protection against penetration of concrete laitance
■ Creates precisely bevelled pipe penetrations
■ Time savings

Synko-Flex® non-expanding adhesive waterstop
Synko-Flex® is a unique non-expanding adhesive waterstop
that bonds to existing concrete surfaces and fuses with
fresh concrete during the curing process. It creates a per-
manent seal which is resistant to acids, alkalis, silage and
salt water. It can therefore be applied to existing concrete
and scabbled surfaces, around through-wall pipes and fit-
tings, in and around sewerage and silage environments, and
to protect reinforcement. Unlike hydrophilic expanding wa-
terstops, Synko-Flex® is unaffected by rain, snow, ground
water or water on-site. The watertight seal of Synko-Flex®
has a proven reliability of over 30 years on contracts world-
wide. With ease of application and excellent performance,
the Synko-Flex® range of products is the product of choice
for architects, engineers and contractors alike.

Zemseal® fully bonded membrane
Long term experience has demonstrated, that structurally inte-
gral watertight construction (BS 8102:2009 Type B/DAfStb “Wa-
terproof concrete”-controlled crack width design) alone cannot
reliably guarantee the desired level of service for structures with
high grade use requirements (BS8102:2009 Grade 3/DAfStb
use category A+). In order to comply with design parameters
and the requirements of sustained serviceability, a combined
approach between structurally integral protection and an addi-
tional barrier protection (BS8102:2009 Type A) is in order. Bon-
ded membranes have come to replace un-bonded membranes
and bituminous or cementitious coating systems. Zemseal® is
the next generation substructure waterproofing, combining
adhesive seal and mechanical bond in one product. The grid
structure will bond into the cement matrix, while the adhesive
will actively prevent any water tracking to occur. Zemseal® elimi-
nates the issues associated with conventional Type A solutions. 31
