Introduction – SEADM’s proposal
Are you involved in structural elucidation of molecules, particle
or nanoparticle analysis, atmospheric research, or polymer
technology?
Do you need an improvement on your MS (mass spectrometer
) selectivity responding much faster than gas or liquid
chromatography?
Are you thinking of adding mobility dimension to your
analysis?
SEADM’s supercritical DMA (Differential mobility analyzer) may
be the upgrade you are looking for.
In our eagerness to be able to analyze both atmospheric and
biological samples at the challenging fentogram level, we have
faced sensitivity and selectivity problems unsolved by
commercial devices. In collaboration with colleagues at Yale
University, we have developed high resolution supercritical
mobility analyzers that allow for unprecedented selectivity and
sensitivity for rapid measurements.
The DMA measures true linear mobility and therefore is a
powerful tool for structural studies of biomolecules.
Adding the mobility dimension enables mass distribution
measurements in industrial polymers where pure mass spectra
are generally unresolvable at moderate and large molecular
weights.
In the field of explosive trace detection in air, an important area
of expertise for SEADM, mobility analysis together with high
sensitivity MS leads to detection limits below 1pg/m3 in some
cases.

Comercial options available
Enhanced ionization option: Instead of the basic ionization chamber, for high sensitivity volatile analysis, an improved LFSESI (Low flow secondary electrospray ionization) or a full metal chamber for APCI can be purchased. Both include temperature control and can be used as nano ESI, SESI, or APCI. The ionization efficiency can reach values of 1/700 (in the case of TNT vapors in a LFSESI).
DMA basic system: The basic system consist of a fully operative DMA device ready to be plugged to a MS in the list below with minor modification of MS interface. With a modest level of effort the DMA may be coupled essentially to any MS with an atmospheric pressure interface. The basic system includes all HV supplies, pressure and flow controls, clean recirculation pump and circuit, and a basic ionization chamber for either nano-spray or corona discharge APCI. Only standard power supply and around 1 lpm extra clean gas is required. DMA-MS integration: Choose your MS We have experience coupling DMAs to the following MS: - Shimadzu LCMS 2010 de. -ABSciex TOF Qstar -ABSciex Qtrap 3200, 4500 & 5500 -ABSciex Triple Quad 5000 & 5500 -If your favorite MS is not in this list, we will carry out the integration study for you.

High pressure desolvation option: For samples producing substantial solid residues, or when solvent droplets are a problem, there is a version of the basic DMA with an additional mobility stage with the double function of drying and filtering sample droplets. It is only available with LFSESI chamber and requires up to 30 lpm extra clean gas supply.

Supercritical Planar Mobility Analyzer - Technology Advanced design The geometry and aerodynamics of the DMA have been carefully optimized to deliver a laminar flow at Reynolds number up to 200,000, achieving resolving powers >50 The potential of DMAs for molecular cross section studies, mass pre-filtering and noise reduction have been traditionally limited by low resolution at nanometric sizes, a difficulty now resolved by use of supercritical DMAs. These devices keep the flow laminar at Reynolds numbers considerably higher than 2,000.

Careful manufacturing All manufacturing improvements discovered over the years are implemented on SEADM’s DMAs. Robust architecture, mirror polishing, micro slots or whole thermal control are only some of the improvements included on SEADM’s DMAs. These refinements are the step forward towards accurate and reliable mobility measurement at atmospheric pressure.
High performance about 50% transmission, 1,000 dynamic range and resolving power up to 100 at 1nm. The standalone DMA is capable of distinguishing quantities of around 1ppb of many molecules such as TNT. Combined with MS the limit of detection of TNT reaches 1ppq. The improved software for post signal processing permits isomeric distinction between ions only separated by 1x10-6m2/V/s (mobility units).

Ionization Chamber: SEADM is specialized on nanoESI & LFSESI, but other techniques such as
APCI are also possible
DMA- MS Interface: Easy and fast connection without breaking vacuum. You can return to basic
MS configuration in a few minutes.
Planar DMA: Inlet and outlet slots are accessible allowing high transmission and easy integration with the ionization chamber and the mass spectrometer.
Mass Spectrometer: The coupling with commercial MS lets you take advantage of
state of the art technology changing every day.
Tandem system – 2D analysis Synergy between DMA – MS for breakthrough figures A combined DMA-MS instrument in triple quadrupole mode is capable of reaching unimaginable sensitivity levels on this field until now. It allows molecule, cluster and nanoparticle identification up to several nm diameter with sensitivities below 1pg/m3.
Sample 2D fingerprint A complex sample can be simultaneously mass and mobility analyzed. The DMA enables 2D analysis of any sample with any MS. Furthermore, fast 2D discovery mode is possible with TOF and Trap spectrometers. In this mode 2D plot can be obtained in minutes. Two-dimensional plot of ion
