Summer! What a great time to live in the Shores. And,

as we transition from spring into summer, I need to talk

about some important transitions in our community.

Firstly, this issue of the SeaGull marks the end of a very

long run for a hard working SeaGull staff. Rosanne,

Claudia and Ann have continuously turned out a quality

publication for a very long time. It has taken lots of hard

work which has paid off because, in my judgment, it has

provided a mechanism that really enhances our sense of

community. I’m sure you will all join me in expressing

our gratitude to the folks for a job well done. At this

point, the future of the SeaGull is unclear. Rosanne

leads a committee that is exploring various paths

forward and we are all anxious to see what emerges.

Our second transition to focus on is how this community

is managed. Historically, the management has been

accomplished by the Board of Directors consisting of

nine volunteers who oversee and conduct the

community’s business. This process is straining as we

are currently down to eight Board members and expect

to lose one (possibly two) members soon. We have

issued a call for volunteers to serve on the Board, but

have been unsuccessful in acquiring any qualified

candidates. It is becoming difficult to manage with the

staff level we have and we may need to consider hiring

an independent management firm to supplement the

Board’s efforts. I expect to investigate the pros and cons

of this and discuss it more fully at the annual meeting in

October; however, I am open to hearing opinions from

residents.

On that note, let me close by wishing everyone an

enjoyable summer here in Patchogue Shores.

FULL CIRCLE By Rosanne O’Reilly, Editor

I took a walk to the playground with my three year old grandson, the same walk I took with my children many years ago (full circle). The sun was shining. The Great South Bay sparkled with the same delight as I saw in my grandson’s eyes. He ran across the field to the playground as I tried to keep up with him.

Our private Patchogue Shores Beach and Community Center are such a blessing to me and my family. I was in awe of how beautiful it all looked, with the blue awning over the picnic tables, the canoes resting on the new rack, and the perfectly shaped hedges surrounding the historic anchor. What a perfect day!

I also thought about the first issue of the SeaGull newsletter. My neighbor, Debbie Uitto, who lived behind me at the time, was enamored with the idea of reviving the SeaGull that flew at least a decade prior. Well, the first meeting was held at her home on Laura Avenue. That experience has come full circle, and twenty six years later, I sat down in the same house,

now belonging to Ann Mohlmann, and worked on my final issue of the Seagull as editor.

I would like to thank everyone that contributed to the success of the SeaGull and kept it flying all these years. I have enjoyed working with my neighbors and sharing the benefits of this wonderful community.

BEACH BEAUTIFICATION UPDATE

by Robert Aiello

It is with great sadness and admiration for Rosanne O’Reilly and Claudia King that I write what I hope will not be my last SeaGull article. The SeaGull has been an integral part of our community for as long

as I can remember and I always looked forward to reading it. Our community is indebted to Rosanne, Claudia and the entire SeaGull staff for their tremendous efforts in getting out The SeaGull year after year for so many years. It is a tremendous effort and they deserve our praise for a job well done. I would love to continue writing articles and hope someone steps up to continue with its publication.

The Patchogue Shores Beach Beautification Committee has reserved the Community Center for Italian Night on Saturday, July 26th, 2014 and I would like to use this event to honor Rosanne, Claudia and the entire Seagull staff for their hard work. Please save the date and I hope you will join us in celebrating these wonderful community members.

Our committee has finished replacing the boat rack which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. We have completed most of the repairs caused by Hurricane Sandy. At this point we plan to have a meeting to discuss new projects. We would like to beautify the front area of the Community Center and install a volleyball court. If anyone has any other ideas, please let us know. I can be reached at [email protected] or (516) 297-6708.

After a cold and snowy winter, much worse than I have seen in many years, I am hopeful the nice weather is upon us and I look forward to seeing our community enjoy our wonderful beachfront area.

LETTERS SUBMITTED FROM RESIDENTS:

(See disclaimer on page 2 regarding submission of letters)

ORGANIZATIONS CONCERNED ABOUT EAST PATCHOGUE By Rosanne O’Reilly

There are two local organizations who are interested in improving the quality of life in East Patchogue. One is the Swan Lake Park Civic Association, our neighbors who live in the community by Robo Car Wash. Jeff Berthold, President of the Association, is looking for new members to join this civic minded organization. People informed of local issues affecting our community can unite, resulting in a platform with the ability to reach out to elected officials. One example of the group’s effort is the current issue of the proposed Walmart on Hospital Road. You are invited to attend meetings which are held every first Thursday of the month at 7:30pm at their Community Center, 86 Lake Dr., East Patchogue.

Focus East Patchogue is a group of concerned residents, business owners and professionals whose main focus is the revitalization in East Patchogue. They invite you to join their group to strengthen their voice, as there is strength in numbers. To be added to their mailing list, email [email protected].

The park at the intersection of South Country Road and Montauk Highway, east of CVS, is a lovely addition to our community. And the continuation of the park, across the street, is a haven for misplaced wildlife. If you would like to see more improvements in our community, please consider attending the group’s meetings and visit the web-site at www.focuseastpatchogue.com for additional information.

Dear Residents of Patchogue Shores and your Guests, I was extremely saddened at the intentional vandalism to the basketball hoop backboard. Not only could someone have gotten hurt from the broken backboard, but now those who have enjoyed playing there cannot. This hoop was donated to honor my mother Helen Hurley who was a bench “grand”mom. Not only to honor her but to honor all supporters of our student athletes. She died before she could see my son Peter play college level basketball, but I know she was cheering from above. If you know who did this, or maybe you were one of the participants in this activity, “man up” and do the right thing. Take ownership of your actions. Sincerely, Mary A Hurley Mehmel

Dear Residents of Patchogue Shores, Please cease emptying your pools, basements, etc. onto the streets of Patchogue Shores. First of all it is illegal and more importantly it is undermining our roads and is a pain in the neck for drivers having to drive through it, not knowing the composition of the liquid and how harmful it might be for the bottom of their cars. Sincerely, Eddie Foster

Dear Patchogue Shore Neighbors, I’ve been renting in this community for 2-1/2 years. I love it here. I first met other residents via the 75th Anniversary Party. Since then I’ve made friends, attended events at the Community Center, and joined the staff of the SeaGull. Living here has been very positive for me. Recently my life situation changed. I stopped working and applied for disability. I have money saved to pay rent and a promise from a family member to help financially while I’m in this transition. I am seeking housing that is less expensive than my current rent and wondering if anyone in the Patchogue Shores community may have (or know of) something suitable. I am open to all ideas, including a house share. I’m a single mature adult with one mature cat. Since I am not working I am also available for child care, elder care, errands etc. Could potentially barter for rent. I can be reached at 505-8413 or email at [email protected] Thanks! Karen Thompson

OUR LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN… By Candace Sweeney

I am sure that if you ask yourself and your neighbors what it means to live in "The Shores," (Patchogue not South Country), you will get many different answers, but for me it is not just one thing, it is so many wonderful people and memories.

Over the years we have had many wonderful events from “Beverages on the Bay” and all kinds of children's parties to beach clean ups and spaghetti dinners! All these events are what make living in Patchogue Shores special. Have you experienced a Patchogue Shores Halloween yet? What a blast for our little ones (big ones too!). I think our kids grow up thinking everyone has a hayride and pizza for every Halloween everywhere! That is what makes this such a great place to live.

I remember hearing "it takes a village" and that holds true for our little slice of heaven on the south shore of Long Island! Our community is run by volunteers, whether it is a function at the club house, beach cleanup, serving as a Board member or helping write, organize, solicit ads and publish the SeaGull. Everyone is busy, have health issues, kids or many other things that occupy our lives. We still need volunteers to help continue and preserve our little slice of heaven. I had my

own health issues that caused me to step down from the Board and basically not run any events for a few years. At some point I was asked if there was any way I felt up to some kid functions. When I was done running the egg event at Easter time, it reminded me what, as a community, we were missing! It was so much fun and the kids had a blast! These are all the things that make our neighborhood awesome!

So please get involved. We have awesome residents who volunteer to publish and distribute The SeaGull which provides our residents with lots of information. I know I look forward to getting my copy. They are looking for fresh blood to take over and continue to keep all of our residents up to date and connected.

HEALTH CARE REFORM AND DEPENDENTS Submitted by Mary Mehmel

It’s challenging to keep up with all the new changes in Health Care Reform. Did you know that New York State law requires all group health insurance plans sold in New York to make coverage available to policyholders’ dependents through age 29? This law doesn’t apply to many big employers because they self-insure rather than buy insurance. Self-insurers are governed by federal law, not state law. An employer who is subject to that law can satisfy its requirements either by 1) including extended dependent coverage in the group plan, so that the cost of covering young adults through age 29 is

spread among all employees who elect dependent coverage or 2) by making extended coverage available only on request, so that it’s cost is paid only by the employees who request it. In that case, extended young adult coverage becomes similar to COBRA. COBRA gives people who are insured in an employer-sponsored group plan the right to continue buying insurance in the plan even after they have otherwise lost their eligibility for coverage. If your employer is subject to state law, your child qualifies for extended coverage even if they don’t live with you and aren’t financially dependant on you provided they are unmarried, younger than 30, not covered or eligible for employer-sponsored coverage or a self-insured employer plan and lives and works in New York State.

Submitted by SeaGull staff member Ann Mohlmann:

When I moved into Patchogue Shores in 1998, the very first thing I found in my mailbox (even before any utility bills) was the SeaGull, delivered by a then 7 year old Erin O'Reilly. I can't tell you how happy it made me to find that newsletter! Although I didn't know any of the names in the "This-N-That" section, I got such a sense of "community" just by reading it. In my old neighborhood, I didn't even know my neighbors; much less know their birthdays, anniversaries, or accomplishments.

In 2001, my neighbor Rosanne O'Reilly asked me if I would be interested in joining the staff of the SeaGull, and I did. (I actually owed her a favor, she had called the fire department when my oil burner was acting up and it appeared that my house may have been on fire, how could I say no?) By getting involved, I got to meet and

know more of my neighbors better. It's funny too, how when I deliver the SeaGull, people will stop to ask me about something that's going on in the community. You just don't get that in other neighborhoods.

Being a part of the SeaGull has been a wonderful experience for me. I hope it will continue to fly, although Rosanne and Claudia leave some pretty big shoes to fill! I know it will be a welcome delivery in a new neighbor's mailbox, as it was in mine years ago.

Submitted by Sea Gull staff member Claudia King:

Well since my fellow SeaGull staff members have written their own SeaGull memoirs of sorts, I feel like I should write a few words as well.

I still can’t believe that this is the last issue of the SeaGull that I am laying out. Forgive me for saying it, but I am relieved! When someone brings up the fact that I’m stepping down, I usually reply with something like this: “25 years is plenty long enough to do a lot of things, and working on the SeaGull is one of them.” Not to say that I haven’t enjoyed working with Rosanne and Ann all these years. We were like a fine tuned machine when it came to the SeaGull. Rosanne would coordinate the content and edit, Ann would handle the advertising, and I would sit at my computer and lay it all out. Mary Mehmel and more recently Karen Thompson also supplied some great content and ideas.

Although Rosanne began working on the SeaGull right from Volume 1 No. 1, I didn’t jump on board until Volume 1 No. 4 which was the 1989 summer issue. That makes this issue my actual 25th anniversary as a SeaGull staff member. What a fitting time to bid a fond farewell. I do hope the SeaGull does continue to fly, in one way or another. See you around the Shores folks!

Submitted by Shores resident Renee Reynolds:

My husband Bill and I have lived in the Shores for almost 25 years. It is hard to believe that we have been a part of this community for so many wonderful years. From the very first week that we moved into our home on Wall Street, we felt a sense of community as soon as we settled in when we were graciously greeted at our front door by members of the Patchogue Shores Women’s Club with a welcome gift and goodies about the Shores. This sense of community and tradition has continued through the years through our community newsletter, The SeaGull. I personally want to thank the staff and my good friends, Rosanne, Claudia and Ann for their tireless efforts and commitment at single handedly keeping The SeaGull alive and flying into our homes and hearts for so many years. Job well done!!!!

HE ALWAYS CALLED HER MY DAUGHTER

By Karen Thompson

My friend Tony had three 3 cats. When we went to the animal shelter to pick out his first cat the name tag on the grey male’s cage read “Tony”. Believing in signs, he was chosen. Tony

altered the name to Tiger (as in the cereal cartoon character Tony the Tiger). They lived in harmony for about 2 years; then Tony’s craving for another kitty kicked in. He learned that a friend’s cat was having kittens, and requested one from the litter. The friend instead brought 2 sisters, and Tony caved. He had a harder time naming these 2, as the black and white sisters looked alike. We tried Laverne and Shirley, he would refer to them as the big one or the little one, the (more) black one or the (more) white one. He once had a cat named Sheba, an elegant ebony beauty. He tried putting that name on the little one but it never worked for me. She was skinny and shy, maybe needed glasses.

The sisters’ personality differences became clear. Tiger took to the one who eventually earned the name Princess. They curled up with each other to sleep. They cleaned one another after romping around outdoors; the hunky male with the pretty female. Tiger started to pick on the sister. Three’s a crowd? Whenever I would visit, Tiger would be first to greet me. If he was outside he would run over to me, meowing and meowing, making strong eye contact. I felt like I was getting the scoop on what’s been going on. Princess would make her way from the bedroom to the living room, occasionally sitting on my lap, splaying out her long soft legs. More often than not she kept her distance or sat with Tony. Lastly the third wheel would roll out. Tony said her behavior with me was different than with anyone else. She would come directly for me and not sit in my lap but climb vertically on my chest, lying heartbeat to heartbeat, often eye to eye. We quickly bonded. Soon he would be saying, “Your daughter is looking for you.”

In my 30s I developed cat allergies. So odd for the body to alter like that. I found that I wasn’t allergic to every cat, and it didn’t necessarily correspond to it being a long or short haired breed. I wasn’t allergic to Tiger but became allergic to the group. I found that taking a Claritin would usually stave off symptoms.

It’s very difficult to find apartments to rent that accept pets. My last three rentals were not pet welcoming. Tony started petitioning me to take my daughter. Being a fellow renter he felt it would make it easier on him to find his next place with two pets and not three. He also was upset that she was being mistreated by her sister’s boyfriend. After three years of co-habitation it wasn’t getting better. I wasn’t sure I wanted to bring allergens into my apartment.

It’s funny how sometimes things fall into place. My landlords switched hands and the new landlords have their own cats and agreed I could have one too. My relationship with Tony was faltering and I felt it was time to make the move.

With my car loaded with freshly purchased litter and Friskies and HEPA filter air purifiers I picked up my girl. I had taken to calling her Meerkat because of her resemblance to those cute critters, her pointy face and big eyes. I like the play on words too. The first night she was understandably freaked out. Howling like a cat in heat, 4 am… 5 am… I lay awake plotting how I was going to return my new purchases AND her in the morning. Thankfully the howling stopped that next day, so our trial period continued. She spent a lot of time under the bed, and was obviously nervous, but calmed when she saw me. We had a bunk bed thing going for a while, she slept under and came out yawning as we both woke to greet the new day.

About a week in on this relationship I had an accident. A number of fractures to the foot put me in a big boot cast. Also put me homebound because it was my driving foot. No working, no escaping. My Meerkat became a healer, resting on my lap, thereby preventing me from getting up and using the damaged foot. She still does the vertical rock climber move too, hypnotizing me with those eyes. Maybe even healed the allergies as even during Spring am feeling fine. She has been a companion by my side. I can’t imagine going through this living alone, as I was just a week prior. We talk, we play, and I laugh! She has become quite verbose now that she is the only cat in the house. If she hears my voice on the phone in the next room she marches out and trills at me. It’s not a meow; it’s more like the sound of a Star Trek Tribble. It comes from that purring zone; cracks me up. She even looks prettier, maybe maturing into a Queen Sheba after all.

The other night I thought I heard her crying at the outside door to come in. But then I heard my landlords’ baby crying on the other side of the wall and started to doubt my ears. I got up...yup that was my baby crying too. This Mother’s Day, now the fifth without my mother, felt special for me now that I have my daughter.
