About SE Befr iender Progr am

    Introduction

In the Singapore context, the social enterprise organizational form currently struggles to attainconstitutive legitimacy . Constitutive legitimation or the process of attaining taken-for-grantednessis a challenge as the level of public awareness of the social enterprise form is low; and variousmarginalized communities continue to be targets of societys prejudice and discrimination. One majorconsequence of this lack of constitutive legitimacy is the difficulty faced by social enterprises inrecruiting managerial and professional talent.

    Objectives

AIESEC in NUS SE Befriender Programme aims to facilitate the partnership between these 2groups: less-developed social enterprises and corporate companies.

The SE Befriender Programme allows corporate companies to sponsor an overseas intern fromAIESEC to work for a social enterprise, in Singapore. The rationale behind this is based on the factthat most social enterprises in Singapore lack the capital to hire interns. As such, the corporatecompany would be responsible for the interns food, lodging and salary.

Whats special about this programme is that the intern(s) involved will be from overseas, hailing fromcountries such as Japan, Canada and the UK. Not only will Singaporean social enterprises benefitfrom the extra help the intern would provide, but they would also gain from the interns fresh viewsand opinions, due to his/her completely different background. This would definitely enhance thesocial enterprises potential to excel not only locally, but maybe even internationally.

Corporate companies also stand to benefit from this specially tailored programme. By playing amassive role in this programme, they would be giving themselves an extra edge over other corporatefirms by having a substantially impactful responsibility in this bid to improve our communityspotential in the field of social enterprise.

    Social Enterprises

Social enterprises (SEs) are organizations set up to fulfill social purposes. It includes any non-

profit, for-profit or hybrid corporations. In Singapore, social enterprises typically adopt the workintegration model and take the form of enterprises providing training and employment opportunitiesfor various marginalized communities (e.g., ex-offenders, recovering substance abusers, out-of-school youths, people with intellectual, physical and psychiatric disabilities, single mothers with loweducational levels, and people living with HIV).

Social enterprises provide members of marginalized communities with a sustained source of income, improving their quality of life, empowering them, and integrating/reintegrating them into themainstream society. In short, social enterprises differ from traditional business enterprises becausethey operate with a social mission, i.e., meeting the previously unmet economic and social needs ofmarginalized communities.
