GASOLINEThe two-cycle engiue on this preduct requires a fuelmixture of regular unleaded gasoline and a high quality2-cycte engine off (AIR-COOI_D) for lubrication ofthe bearings and other moving parts. The correct fuel]oll _e is 40:I (see Fuel Mixture Chart). Tootlttle offor the incorrect oil type wi]] caUse poorperformance andmay cause the engine to overheat and seize.

Ga_line and o_ must be premixed in a clean approvedfuel container. Always use fresh regular unleeded gaso-line.

IMPORTANT: Experience indicetes that alcoholblended fuelscalledgasoho! (orusingethanolormetha-nol) can attract moisture, which leads to oi!/gas separa-tion and formation of aoids during storage. Acidic gascan damage the fuel system of an engine whilein stor-age. To avoid engine problems, thefuet system shouldbe emptied before storagefor 30 days or longer. Drainthe gas tank, then run the fuel outof the carburetor andfuel lines by starting the eng{neand letting it rununtil itsL,'_s, Use fresh f,_ ne_ se,_-',s_'_.8Be STOF_AGEinstructionsfor additbnal information. Neveruseengineorca,.'buretorcleaner p_oductsin the fuel tankorperma-nent damage may occur.

I£ CRAFTSMAN 2 cycle oil is not available, use a goodquality 2 cycle AIR-COOLED engine oil that has arecommended fuel mix 40:1.

B. STARTING INSTRUCTIONS(For location of controls_ refer to "Specifications.')

1. Before starting the engine:a. Fuel eng_me, Move 10 feet (3 meters) away from

fudlng rite.b. Rest engine on the ground. Support the unit so

the blade is off of the ground and away from trees,bushes, onlookers, etc. Figure 1.

2. For a cold engine or a warm engine after run-ning out of f_el:w Move ignition switch to _RUN. _ Figure 2.b. Move choke to the "FULL" pa_ifiom Figure 3.c_ Push down the throttle lock-out, squeeze the

3. TRIMMINGa.Inspeet the area to be cut before each use.

Remove objects (recks, broken glass, n,_s, wire,string, etc.) which can be thrown or become en-taughd in the cutting blades.

B, OPF_RA_G T_S

As you become familiar with your unit, you will be ableto determine ymrr own opexatir_pace.Conditionssuch

asthe type and sizeofmater_ being cut willregulatethe speed and time requiredforyour job.

1. Allow the cuttingblades to reach full speedbefore entering the material to be cut.

2..always work going away from people andsolid objects such as walIs, large stones, trees,automobiles, etc.

3. If the blade s_aIls, immediately stop the en-gh_. Make sure the ignition switch is off, thespark plug is disconnected, and the blade hasstopped moving before c_aring jammed debris

C. TRIMMinG METHODS

Do not try to cut stems larger than 3/8"thick.

1. TOP CIYlWING

a_ For New or Young Growth:When trimming new or young growth, use awide, sweepingmotiom th'gm"e6A. A ahght,downward tilt of the cutting bl_es in the vh-re.on of motion gives the bestcuttingresults.

b. For Older, Thicker GrowtJa:older, thicker growth by using a sawing

motion. Figure 6 B.

c. For Precise, Level Cuts:Ifapreciselylevelcutisdesired,stretchapieceof string across the length of the hedge. Guidethe cut'dngbladesslowlyacrossthe top of thestring. Figv_re 7.

2. SIDE CUTTING

When trimming the sides of the hedge, be_in at thebo_m and cutupward,tapering_lehedge in-ward at the top. Figure 7 (inset). Cu_ngin thismethod w_t leave the body of the hedge narroweratthe top. This shape wz31e_pose more of thehedge,resulting in moreuniferm_rewth.

• Ifyour unit i_equipped with a blade, removeit from theunit. Refer to "Assembly =. Apply a coating of oil to theentire surface of the blade and wrap it in heavy paper,cloth, or plastic. Also apply a light coat of oil to gearhousing threads, then tighten blade nut for storage.

• Reassemble all loose parts, being sure that alI handlesand guards are in place and are securely fastene_L Re-place any damaged parts.

ENGINENever use engine or carburetor cleaner products in thefuel tank or permanent damage may occur to fuel systemcomponents.Fbllow these _ctians:

1. Drainthefuelfrom the unit into an approvedfuel container.

2. Drain the fuel lines and carburetor by startingthe engine and letting it run until it stops.

3. Allow the engine to cool before storage.IMPORTANt. It is important to prevent gum depositsfrom forming in essenth] fuel system parts such as thecarburetor, fuel filter, fuel line or tank during storage.ALso, exparience indicates that alcohol blended fuels,those that _se ethanol or methanol (called gasohol or _y-gartered fuel), can attract moisture and form widle gaswhich will damage your engine. To avoid engine prob-lems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage of30 days or longenNOTE: Fue! s_bi]izer is a_ acceptable alternative inminimizing the formationof fuel gum deposits duringstorage.Add stabilizertothegasolineinthefueltankorfuel storagecontainer.Always follow the mix _nsfound on stabilizer container. Cra_man 40:1 2-cyete engine oil is speciallyblended wi_ fuelstabilJzan_. Ifyoudonotuse this SEARSoil, you can add a fuel stabilizer (such as Craftsman#33500) to your fueI tank.

• Replace spark ptugwith a new one ofthe recommendedtype and heat range. Refer to "Product Specifica-tions".
