The new committee of office bearers were elected and assumed office with Mr. R. Chandran continuing to be the secretary of the society. The managing Committee is proud to inform that the Society has obtained the exclusive rights to supply groceries and vegetables to around 100 schools in and around Salem District for three years commencing the financial year 2008-2009. During the year the society focused in empowerment of dalit youths in rural areas and women with a special focus on empowering the self – help groups and in creating awareness in eradication of female infanticide. The following programmes were organized by the society during the financial year2007-2008 . Free medical camp: The society organized the free medical camp at Rakkipatti on 07-04-2007 Dr. Muthusamy and Dr. Prakash participate in the camp and diagnosed around 78 patients for Diabetic, Respiratory problems, loss of weight and other ailments. More than 40 patients were referred to government Mohan Kumaramangalam Hospital for specific treatment. ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2007 – 2008

The Managing Committee of the Salem District People Service Society is

pleased to present the annual report of the Society. The new committee of office bearers

were elected and assumed office with Mr. R. Chandran continuing to be the secretary of

the society. The managing Committee is proud to inform that the Society has obtained

the exclusive rights to supply groceries and vegetables to around 100 schools in and

around Salem District for three years commencing the financial year 2008-2009. During

the year the society focused in empowerment of dalit youths in rural areas and women

with a special focus on empowering the self – help groups and in creating awareness in

eradication of female infanticide. The following programmes were organized by the

society during the financial year2007-2008 .

Free medical camp:

The society organized the free medical camp at Rakkipatti on 07-04-2007 Dr.

Muthusamy and Dr. Prakash participate in the camp and diagnosed around 78 patients

for Diabetic, Respiratory problems, loss of weight and other ailments. More than 40

patients were referred to government Mohan Kumaramangalam Hospital for specific

treatment. Our Secretary Sri R.Chandran delivered the presidential address and

highlighted the number of problems faced by the rural masses.

Rural health awareness programme:

The society conducted Rural Health Awareness in as much as twelve villages in

and around Veerapandi and Magudanchavadi blocks. Every month a programme was

conducted at Pudupalayam, Pethampatty, Attayampatty, Subburampuram, Kadathur,

Palampatty, Rakkipatty, Ettimanikampatty, Rajapalayam, Veerapandi, Kakkapalayam

and Ariyanur under the chairman of eminent personalities whose address had reached

maximum number of participants in the respective villages. Invariably, in all the

meetings, our secretary also addressed the gathering with emphasis on health

awareness and health hazards affecting the community at large. The alarming issues

relating to poor drainage system, inadequate sanitation facilities, dumping of garbage

and disposal of waste materials, preventive measures to protect the breeding the

mosquitoes were highlighted in the programmes. The releases of drainage water without

any stagnation were discussed. Requests were placed before the village authorities for

spraying of insecticides in drainage water to avoid breeding of mosquitoes in the light of

raising cases of Chickun Kunya related fever and diseases.

Consumer Awareness programme:

The Society organized consumer awareness programmes at Ettimanickampatty

and coolipatty villages during the year, Sub-Inspector of police at Attyampatty Station

and Sri. S.P. Palanisamy, social worker and secretary of Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare

Development Association participated and delivered about the rights and duties of

citizens on consumer awareness and consumer rights at Ettimanikampatty. They

highlighted the importance of consumer rights and the ways they are being victimized at

various levels in their day-today life.

Environmental Awareness Programme:

The society organized Environmental Awareness programme at seeragapady on

20th June, 2007. The theme of the programme was “Solid Waste Management and

Biodiversity Conservation”. Dr.Vijayakumar, professor at Vinayaka Mission Medical

college, Mr. Samikannu, Block Development Officer at veerapandi, Mr. P. Saravana

Raju, Member TNEC andMr. Kuppusamy, Chairman Veerapandi Panchayat union

addressed the gathering.They highlighted the importance of afforestation and the need

for planting the trees in large members. Also tree planting were established as part of

the programme. The ill effects of environmental pollution, degradation of eco-system and

pollution caused by burning plastic and polythene bags and papers were highlighted in

the meeting. The pollution caused discharge of waste water and effluents by textile and

dying units, sago factories and chemical units were addressed and steps necessary to

ensure safe discharge of waste water is highlighted. The meeting resolved the total ban

on burning the plastic and polythene bags and papers at public places in Salem District.

Dalit Empowerment Programme:

The Dalit Population was higher in Attayampatti, coolipatti, Ettimanikampatty,

Rakkipatty, kakkapalayam and seeragapady villages. Most of them of agriculture

laborers and construction workers. The oppression and untouchability are notice at

many places in these villages. “Dalit Human Rights” training was organized at

Attayampatty Community Hall on 11-05-2007 highlighting the legal protection under the

SC & ST commission and the development schemes under TAHDCO. Around 67

Participants mostly women and youth took part in this programme.

Independence Day Celebrations:

Independence Day was celebrate at chinaseeragapadi village High school. The

school Head Master and our Secretary addressed the students highlighting the freedom

struggle and the liberty enjoyed by us at present. Patriotic feelings were are used in the

minds of kids with stories on freedom fighters. The School Head Master hosted the

National Flag and our secretary distributed sweets to children and the general public

gathered in the school grounds.

Breast Feeding Awareness Programme:

Our society organized Breast Feeding Awareness Programme on 6th July,2008

It is common even in rural areas the practice of neglecting the breast feeding due to

various socio-economic issues. The importance of breast feeding and the enhancement

of immunity power in infants and the health and welfare of mothers through breast

feeding were emphasized in the programme. Around 20 young mothers and 12

adolescent girls participated in the programme.

World Blood Donation Day:

The world Blood Donation Day was observed at Veerapandi High School. The

District Panchayat Chairman, Sri. Kuppusamy, Our Secretary Sri. R. Chandran, Dr.

Manokaran, and social workers Sri. P. Gunasekaran and Sri. S. P. Palanisamy delivered

their special address about the importance of Blood Donation. The safer practices of

blood transmission and the myths in the minds of the people about Blood donation were

highlighted by Dr. Manoharan.

World Women’s Day Programme:

The society observed the World Women’s Day on 8th march,2007 at

Ettimanickampatty. This was also observed as a grand event with more than 260 women

participants in the programme. Mrs. S. Saraswathi, an activist from Perambalur and Mrs.

Kalaimagal from Pudukottai participated and deliberated the women’s issue and

highlighted the women’s participation in the development of the mainstream economy.

The programme emphasized and assured the women were aware of their rights in the

society. No more the women were treated as slaves and the problems overcoming

dowry harassments, violence against women and female infanticide were highlighted in

the programme. The women’s right to equal wages in unorganized sector were also

highlighted in the programme.

Children Skill Training:

The society organized the children skill training in the primary schools along with

the volunteers. The children were taught in drawing, embroidery and other skills like

handicrats and competitions were organized and prizes distributed in the primary

schools in veerapandi and Magudanchavadi Blocks.

Organic Farm Training Programme:

The Society organized the organic Farm Training Programmes at veerapandi,

Pudupalayam, Subburampuram and Palampatty villages. Mr. P. Saravanaraju and Mr.

P. Gunasekaran were the resource person to highlight the importance of herbal

fertilizers, vermicompost, bio-pesticides and the opportunity for the village agriculturists

in the promotion and development of plants, herbs and the health improvement systems

were also highlighted and the need for the use of herbal medicine were emphasized.

The use of natural fertilizers and vermicomposts in the production of herbal plants and

sustainable agriculture were highlighted.

World AIDS Day Programme and AIDS Awareness Camp:

The society observed the world AIDS Day programme on 7th December 2005 and

organized the function as a mega event with more than 200 participants. The event was

organized at Coolipatty Mariyamman Temple Grounds. The Chairman of the Veerapandi

panchayat union Sri. S. Kupppusamy was the chief guest and other dignitaries of the

panchayat council were special invitees. Dr. Santhi Kannan, M.B.B.S., D.G.O., delivered

a speech on safe practices and the causes and effects of sexually transmitted disease.

Village Meeting:

At last but not the least the village level meetings in every month covering about

fifteen villages were organized during the year. Various issues for the growth and

development of the respective villages were taken up and resolved with the help of the

the volunteers of the society. During the village meeting village committee and society

analyzed the water and drainage facilities in the villages. During the every month.

Conclusion:

The Society thanks the volunteers. The masses in the rural village in and around

the veerapandi and Magudanchavadi Blocks. The managing Committee thanks the local

supporters and youths for the successful implementation of the programmes organized

by the society. The Managing Committee thanks the Tamilnadu Social Welfare Board,

Tamilnadu voluntary Health Association, Tamilnadu State AIDS Control Society and

Ministry of Environment and Forests for their support and resources provided for the

programmes organized by the society. The Society thank the State Bank of India, Salem

Main Branch and the employees of the Society for their contribution to the activities of

the society.

Our society identifies the three slum area in Salem district. Named Gandhi

Mahan Street, National Improvement Colony, Panchathanki Yeari, in this area we take

slum survery about the community facilities (Water and Sanitation and Hygienic) of this

programme. By 1:1 from the community people gave details for this Survey. The Survey

contains about the issues relating to poor drainage system, inadequate sanitation

facilities, dumping of garbage and disposal of waste materials, preventive measures to

protect the breeding the mosquitoes were highlighted in the programmes. The release of

The Managing Committee of the Salem District People Service Society is

pleased to present the annual report of the Society. The new committee of office bearers

the society. The following programmes were organized by the society during the

financial year

Tailoring Programme for women:

This programme is very useful for the poor women especially the deserted

women and widows. By learning tailoring imparted by a qualified teacher the candidates

are able to get jobs in Export Garment manufacturing units. Many of them are also self-

employed. We would like to expand this activity with more machines and infrastructure in

the future. Our society organized two batches for Training in the date on 3/4/2009 To

13/4/2009, 5/7/2009 To 20/7/2009. 130 Women’s participate in that programme and

Benefited.

Wash programme in the schools:

In Salem District Every individual persons know this area Kalarampatty, slum

area in Salem area. Major groups of people are schedule caste and Tribal people living

under the Marginalized Category. This area is outer area from our Town Salem District.

Government scheme and Welfare scheme will neglect. In this target village we cover 2

schools.

School and Address Current issues

This School does not have any toilet facilities for the

students. The girls go to a nearby field while the boys

go to the community toilets outside school campus.

There are no toilet facilities for teachers either. The

school is does not have drinking water facility and

there are no wastewater management systems in the

school as well. The school is not taking any care for

hygiene education of the children.

Nearly 3470 students study in this school. During the

we observe March 22 World Water Day Programme

in the school. During this programme we give

awareness about the wash (Water and Sanitation

and Hygienic) activity.

Naturopathy Development and Awarness Programme:

An awareness and education programme about Naturopathy and Siddha

Medicine was conduted on 30/11/2009 ad Field office in salem Nearly 45 participants

benefited by the programme. The participants were told about many home based

common remedies for simple ailments. They were also distributed information booklets

to learn and empower themselves. The programme was sponsored by National Institute

of Naturopathy, Pune.

Anti-Tobacco Day Awarness programme :

“Tobacco consumption is injurious to health - Say Good Bye tobacco”

Awareness is a valuable method in helping to raise the general level of expectations and

desire in society particularly the school children, Company workers,the human resources

potential and the future citizens of our country, about safe and healthy living. Which may

give it a status and perceived level of importance that will prompt a culture change? In

this Rally start by Father Mr. Arullapan Head master little flower school. Mr. varama.

Industrialist participates in the programme. The programme Awarness vehicle Display

The society organized the free medical camp at Rakkipatti and mallur on 3.4.09 &

5.7.09 Dr. Muthusamy and Dr. Prakash participate in the camp and diagnosed around

78 patients for Diabetic, Respiratory problems, loss of weight and other ailments. More

than 40 patients were referred to government Mohan Kumaramangalam Hospital for

specific treatment. Our Secretary Sri R.Chandran delivered the presidential address and

highlighted the number of problems faced by the rural masses.

Conclusion:

The Society thanks the volunteers. The masses in the rural village in and around

the veerapandi and Magudanchavadi Blocks. The managing Committee thanks the local

supporters and youths for the successful implementation of the programmes organized

by the society. The Managing Committee thanks the Tamilnadu Social Welfare Board,

Tamilnadu voluntary Health Association, Tamilnadu State AIDS Control Society and

Ministry of Environment and Forests for their support and resources provided for the

programmes organized by the society. The Society thank the State Bank of India, Salem

Main Branch and the employees of the Society for their contribution to the society.
