StoryCorps Booth Returns to South DakotaStoryCorps’ mobile recording booth will

be rolling into Rapid City this September. StoryCorps, which regularly airs stories

on Fridays on Morning Edition and on Saturdays on Weekend Edition on SDPB Radio, preserves stories from people throughout the nation. The stories are collected throughout the country and stored at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress for future generations. The MobileBooth will collect stories in Rapid City from Sept. 20 to Oct. 16.

Stay tuned for details on how to record your story.

The nonprofit organization’s MobileBooth visited South Dakota in June 2007, recording dozens of South Dakota stories for the archives.

Storytellers are invited to make appointments to record in the booth with a friend or relative who “interviews” them as they tell their story. According to the StoryCorps website, the organization has collected more than 45,000 interviews with nearly 90,000 participants since 2003.

We’ll explore America’s West – past and present – in July with a history of South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore, an Arctic adventure and the journey of Lewis & Clark.

American ExperienceMount RushmoreSDPB1: Tuesday, July 2, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Friday, July 5, 7pm (6 MT)pbs.org/wgbh/amex/rushmore

South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore is recognized around the world; however, the story behind the construction of the national monument is not as well known. American Experience digs into the past with Mount Rushmore.

Learn more about the monument’s conception, the workers who risked their lives to complete the heads in the midst of the Great Depression, and the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, a man who many thought was insane.

This documentary goes behind-the-scenes to see what daily life was like during the construction of one of America’s greatest treasures. Get the full story, narrated by Michael Murray.

Lewis & Clark The Journey of the Corps of Discovery became one of the most important expeditions in our nation’s history. Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns discovers the stories behind

Arctic SonSDPB1: Tuesday, July 30, 7pm (6 MT)JeanAspen.com

Join SDPB as we step into the Alaskan wilderness with Jean Aspen and Tom Irons as they live off the land for a year.

Their documentary, Arctic Son, follows their progress as the couple, along with their 6-year-old son and a female friend, build a cabin, explore Brooks Ridge (the “last frontier”), and spend the Arctic winter in solitude.

Aspen, born into a family of wilderness adventurers, knows how to live on the land and shows her family what it takes to survive.

Program Looks at Energy Use, IssuesSDPB Radio: Thursday, July 4, Noon (11 MT)BurnAnEnergyJournal.com

It is the fundamental issue of our time: Energy; where we get it; how we use it; what happens then. It powers our homes and our economy; it creates troubled alliances and disturbing divisions; it empowers and impoverishes; it enables almost all that we do and now threatens all that we have become.

BURN: An Energy Journal will explore our energy future through the stories of researchers, inventors, industry insiders and concerned

citizens on SDPB Radio on Thursday, July 4, at Noon (11 MT). These stories will help explain how and why we face an energy crisis, the dilemma of the continuing demand for energy, the realities and consequences of a mostly carbon-based industry and infrastructure.

The program also examines some possible alternatives and personal/global solutions to what looks increasingly to be an ever more grim energy and climate future in the coming decades.

Alex Chadwick hosts.
