SDG Bingo - Game Book The Sustainable Development Goals The sustainable development goals were created by UN. They decided to create 17 goals that are to be reached by 2030. They’ve made goals that concern every single person on this planet, so they spend from poverty to education. Their aspiration was to make their global goals edible, so they wanted to make it easy to start changing the world. Schools, Organizations and businesses have already started implementing ways to improve parts of the world, within their local communities. Scouting and the SDG’s The fourth scout law says ‘A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts’. With the law we promise to commit to being active citizens both in our local communities and on a global level. With our big family of scouts that all commit to be active citizens, it is our duty as scouts to help develop the world. Therefor it only makes sense that we, as scouts, help the UN achieve the 17 sustainable development goals. As Scout centres it is our obligation, that we stand on the frontline and make sure that we are the good example. We want to make sure that we show the scouts that scouting can make a difference on a global level as well as at a local level. This is the reason, we decided that this year’s ‘International Centres Day’, of course, needed to concern the Sustainable Development Goals. Make it your game We hope you will enjoy the game and incorporate it in a sufficient version for your own scout or guide centre after International Centre’s Day is finished. We also encourage you to use the day as assessment of your centre, while having fun solving the tasks. Be creative - It’s time to change the world.

The Sustainable Development Goals

The sustainable development goals were created by UN. They decided to create 17 goals that are to be

poverty to education. Their aspiration was to make their global goals edible, so they wanted to make it easy to

start changing the world. Schools, Organizations and businesses have already started implementing ways to

improve parts of the world, within their local communities.

Introduction

We going to play SDG Bingo with an educational and encouraging twist, to set

the scene for how Scout and Guide Centres can contribute to achieving the

SDGs.

There will be one task for each SDG and one for the global goals logo and you

will get points for each task you are solving within the time limit.

Rules:

- Find descriptions and tasks for each SDG in the Game Book

- Each task can be rewarded with 1-3 points depending on how well the

task is done

- If you finish all 18 tasks you got bingo which results in 20 extra points

- Register your tasks by sending a mail to [email protected] with

centre name and SDG number in the topic field (ex. “Houens Odde 15” -

Deadline for registering tasks is 4.55PM - Feel free to cross the SDG

logos over by the end of each finished task, to get the feeling of playing

bingo.

1 No Poverty (End poverty in all its forms everywhere):

Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life.

That's about one in nine people on earth. As responsible scout centres we should, along with our

guests, handle our food resources in a responsible way, where we are only buying the food we

need, and where we are reducing food waste which will help reduce the overall waste

generation.

Your task is to come up with a plan for how we can reduce food waste at camp sites - should we

make a cook-on-fire-leftover cookbook? Or get special equipment? Or ban certain ingredients?

Perhaps something else?

Make a picture where you are presenting your ideas.

2 Zero Hunger (end hunger achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote

sustainable agriculture):

If we should end hunger, we have to change our food behaviours. As the world’s population is

growing, alternative food resources have to be developed or incorporated, to make sure there is

food enough for everybody. Insects has recently become the new food trend, which should save

the planet. Try to find/ make a recipe with insects and cook and eat it. Take a picture of your

result. You can also take pictures of the insects you wanted to cook along with the recipe if you

do not have cooking equipment.

3 Good health and well being (ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all at all

ages):

Almost 20% of Denmark’s population frequently feels lonely. Loneliness can be caused by many

reasons, but is a health issue that is not a topic in the media. Scouting and guiding are strong

communities which offers space for building long lasting friendships. Take a picture that tells how

you will fight loneliness or another underestimated social problem at your centre.

4 Quality education (ensure inclusive equitable quality education and promote lifelong

learning opportunities for all):

The scouting movement is a key example on how non-formal education is contributing to

increased quality education. Does your centre work with activity assessment? perhaps a

framework on how to build the activities you are offering? Show an activity from your centre,

which have a clear purpose and which provides the participants new knowledge or reflections.

5 Gender Equality (End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls

everywhere):

Sexual harassment and less rights for women are sadly still a theme all over the world.

WAGGGS launched the “Stop the violence” campaign in 2013, with the purpose of educating

girls and women to raise their voice. How is your centre embracing gender equality? Take a

picture of your initiative or of an initiative you would like to start.

6 Clean water and sanitation (Ensure access and sustainable management of water and

sanitation for all):

More than 2.5 billion people don’t have access to basic levels of fresh water for at least one

month each year – a situation growing ever more critical as urban populations expand rapidly.

Every citizen needs a certain amount of water per day, but in many societies an unnecessary

high amount of water per citizen is used. You can as a scout and guide centre help educate your

visitors, as well as your staff, about how only to use the water they need. Figure out a way how

to reduce water consumption at your centre and take a picture of it.

7 Affordable and clean energy (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and

modern energy for all):

Clean, renewable energy is saving our natural resources and are cheaper in use.

WOSM has together with Solar Africa created the initiative Scout go Solar, where scouts can

learn about how to use the energy of the sun to cook and other purposes. Find a link to the

materials in the litterature list in the bottom of the Game Book. Sent a picture of your group

executing one of the activities, or another similar activity you have at the centre, or a renewable

energy feature you have at the centre.

8 Decent work and economic growth (Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable

economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all):

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The

program is providing opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to study, train, gain experience,

and volunteer abroad. Scout and Guide centres are as sending and receiving organisations

essential for the development of many young people every year - regardless of the exchange is

through Erasmus+, national programs or other platforms. Take a picture how your scout centre is

preparing young people for their work life as staff at your centre.

9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive

and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation):

The society around scout and guide centres are constantly changing. So do the demands of our

guests. How are your centre working with development to make sure keeping up with the

society? Take a picture of something developed for the centre recently.

10 Reduced inequalities (reduce inequality within and among countries):

U-report is a free social monitoring tool for community participation, designed to address

worldwide issues. Go to the “U-report global” Facebook page and help give young people a

voice.

Both WOSM and WAGGGS has along with UN chosen to contribute to U-report.

11 Sustainable cities and communities (Make cities and human settlements inclusive,

safe, resilient and sustainable):

SCENES (Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and Environment) is a sustainability pledge

and certification for scout- and guide centres. Use the enclosed (homepage) SCENES

assessment checklist for SCENES to discuss how you can become a SCENES center and send

the assessment to Tobias – if you are already a SCENES centre, take a picture that represents

SCENES for you.

12 Responsible consumption and production (ensure sustainable consumption and

production patterns):

Responsible consumption both relates to the enormous amount of waste we are producing, and

sustainable productions. We will be focusing on the possibilities we have as a scout or guide

centre, to contribute to the goal, by being aware of the suppliers we are using. We do as being

the buyer have the power to demand standards and initiatives, which can both make the

operations at the supplier and centre more sustainable. Think about your supplies. Are they

situated in your neighborhood or far away? Is there a long transport time? Are they focusing on

sustainability? Take a picture of something at your centre, which comes from a local and/ or

responsible supplier, that you are proud of.

13 Climate action (take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact):

Fires at campsites seems like a harmless activity at scout camps, but causes an unfortunate

large amount of CO2 emissions. There are different solutions to cut down the CO2 emissions

due to firewood, such as encouraging guests to take less firewood from firewood lockers and

developing facilities and gadgets, which are reducing the level of firewood needed. Is this an

issue you are dealing with at your centre? Take a picture of your efforts, if you are not dealing

with the issue, make a plan for how you will tackle the issue and send it to Tobias.

14 Life below water (conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources

for sustainable development):

On-the-go lifestyles require easily disposable products, such as soda cans or bottles of water,

but the accumulation of these products has led to increasing amounts of plastic pollution around

the world. The plastic often ends in the oceans where it causes great harm wildlife and the

ecosystem. Make a picture collage with 10 objects made of plastic, that your centre in the near

future could remove from your operations.

15 Life on land (Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems,

sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation

and halt biodiversity loss):

The World Scout Environment Programme offers tools, resources and initiatives to help Scouts

all around the world work together for the good of the local and global environment. The

programme focuses on the environment in a broad sense and encourages the Scouts to have a

holistic awareness of the natural world and how their day-to-day actions can impact upon this,

progressively building a sense of responsibility for the environment. Have a look at the program

(you can find the materials in the litterature list). Make a draft, how can your centre incorporate

the program? If your centre has already incorporated the program, take a picture of the group

trying one of the activities.

16 Peace and justice (Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable

development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and

inclusive institutions at all levels):

Messengers of Peace is a World Scouting Initiative, which encourages Scouts to do community

service and tell the story of their experience in order to inspire others to action. Draft a project,

that you can execute directly after ICD.

17 Partnerships for the goals (Strengthen the means of the implementation and revitalize

the global partnership for sustainable development):

The Goose Network is a way of sharing knowledge and through dialogue and exchange, secure

a sustainable future. Goose Game is one of the tools of the network to encourage our guests to

visit other scout and guide centres, which also promotes international solidarity and cultural

curiosity. Take a picture where you are showing how you are playing the game at your centre, if

you did not incorporate the game, draft a plan how to incorporate it.

18 Create awareness about your contributions to the SDGs

It’s time to change the world. But we cannot do it alone, why you need to tell your guests about

the SDGs.

Create an awareness campaign at the scout centre, where you make it visible how you are

contributing to achieve the SDGs. Make sure the campaign includes ways for your guests to

learn more or contribute.
