In general, is well known that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) were
designed to achieve more sustainable future for the entire world population. These
SDG´s address the global challenges that we live day by day, among which are
including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental
degradation, peace and justice. It is worth noting that the 17 SDG´s are all linked,
and is expected to attain all them until 2030.
Currently, The Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) aligned its
strategy, internal policies and governance to embrace and implement the SDGs and
already is contributing with the development of Life on Lad
GOAL 14: Life on Land
Princess Nora Bint Abdul Rahman University in correspondence to the policies of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Vision 2030 prominently includes a number of objectives to achieve the fifteenth goal of sustainable development. The Government of the Kingdom has also issued regulations to protect protected areas of wildlife and plants. It regulates hunting for wild animals and birds; trafficking in endangered species.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s initiatives for preserving wildlife:
• Saudi Arabia Award for Environmental Management. General view : The award is considered a source of encouragement for interest in joint
environmental work in the Islamic world, and its openness to global
experiences in the field of environment and protection in the Islamic
perspective of the environment and work to protect it and preserve its
components and take care of sustainable development issues in general, by
assessing the efforts of individuals and institutions concerned with managing
natural resources to achieve the required benefit For present and future
generations alike.
Award scope :
The award is concerned with the distinguished work carried out by individuals,
public and private institutions, bodies and organizations working in various
fields of environment and sustainable development in the countries of the
Islamic world. This is in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the
reconciliation of the environment and economic and social development, in a
holistic and integrated framework that contributes to achieving the goals of
sustainable development 2030, in line with Islamic principles calling for the
sustainability of global resources to secure human requirements and well-
being in light of the Secretariat of Independence entrusted to it.
The award also aims to consolidate and embrace the broad concept of
environment and sustainable development in the Islamic world, which
provides for rational use of natural resources and sustainable development
and preserving them from depletion, pollution or extinction, by establishing
principles and methods of sound environmental governance in public, private
and private development institutions and bodies In the Islamic world, and to
contribute to the efforts aimed at achieving human environmental security and
raising the level of quality and quality of life for the people of the Islamic world
and other peoples of the world, as well as caring for the rights of all
generations in a clean environment. The nation's efforts in all areas and
institutions to take innovative solutions and scientific process of current and
future environmental problems, as well as to promote openness scientific and
practical, legal and interaction required at the global, national and regional
level in addressing environmental issues and sustainable development and
download them in the reality of the Muslim world.
Prize award period : The award is granted every two years, and the date is fixed every time when
announcing the opening of the nomination door, and the deadline for receiving
nominations is announced, and prizes are awarded to the winners at the
opening session of the Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers
organized by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization -
ISESCO, in cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the
Authority. The General Authority of Meteorology and Environment in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Higher Committee for the Award may
choose any other time.
Award domains : The areas of the Saudi Arabia Prize for Environmental Management in the
Islamic World include five branches:
The best research, achievements and practices, whether individually or
collectively, in the field of environment and sustainable development,
especially those dealing with environmental problems of interest to the Islamic
world or can be benefited from.
Best practices of projects or activities in the field of environment and
sustainable development in government agencies in member countries.
Best practices of projects, practices or activities in the field of environment
and sustainable development in the private sector in member countries.
Best practices or leadership activities in the field of environment and
sustainable development for public benefit societies and NGOs that can be
generalized in member states.
The best eco-friendly Islamic city that meets the conditions and obligations to
achieve environmental, social and economic sustainability

• "Tree for Every Building" initiative. ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES OF AFFORESTATION
o Increase the percentage of oxygen in the air and work to purify it
o Reduce the summer heat
o Helps reduce air pollution
o Reducing noise and noise
o Increase the percentage of green people per capita
o A natural beauty item for the city
o Civilization of cities is measured by its care for the tree and its spread
by cultivating and nurturing it.
o Provide good lawns in front of homes
o It is distinguished for its ability to resist pests and diseases
PLAN The Riyadh Municipality seeks to implement an initiative to increase the pace
of reforestation and increase the percentage of green people per capita and
increase the number of trees and care for them, through two campaigns,
namely:
A- Residential houses B- Commercial centers and establishments This campaign is concerned with planting trees on the sidewalks in front of
homes, centers, and commercial establishments by their owners, as there will
be a certificate of membership for the participants according to the following
mechanism:
o Register on the campaign site and provide photos
o The monitoring and control team visits the sites and the follow-up.
o Every participant is given after the end of planting and a one-year
organic certificate.

• Establishment of a seed bank. Several initiatives were also launched, most notably the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia Environmental Management Award. Organized under the generous
patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the award is designed
to reinforce a wider concept of environmental management in the Arab world.
Riyadh Municipality set up a website through which it launched an initiative to
plant trees on sidewalks. Entitled “A tree for each building”, the initiative is
meant to give momentum to tree planting in Riyadh and to redouble the
number of trees. The initiative involves planting of trees on front sidewalks of
houses and commercial centers. In the same vein, a seed bank was set up
with an aim to grow local plants for cultivation into their native regions and to
conserve scarce plant species against extinction. On the other hand,
concerned authorities look after protection and fencing of natural areas. A
smart phone application was recently released by Arriyadh Development
Authority to measure air quality status in Riyadh in terms of gaseous
pollutants and aerial planktons.

• Development of the province of Ola and the Forsan Islands.
Farasan Islands Reserve is located in the southeastern part of the Red Sea,
about 42 km offshore of Jazan. The reserve covers a total area of about 5408
km and comprises 84 Islands. The largest inhabited Islands are Farasan
Island, Sajid Island and Qummah Island, in which people mostly work in
fishery, as well as millet and corn farming. Farasan Islands consist of coral
limestone, with an average elevation 10 to 20 meters and up to 40 meters
above the sea level. The maximum height is 75 meters, It also includes a
number of short valleys ending into the sea. The coasts are covered with
white calcareous sands resulting from the destruction of coral reefs and
seashells. Among the most important types of trees there are Acacia tortilis,
impatiens balsamina, Ziziphus jujuba, Salvadora persica (Arak), Vierh and
Rhizophora which form dense coastal mangroves. Moreover, the trees of
Mesquite or Prosopis have recently grown up and spread out through the
reserve. The reserve is home to Idmi, or Mountain Gazelle that permanently
inhabits some of Farasan Islands, along with white-tailed Mongoose and
various types of rodents. There are also many types of birds, especially water,
coastal and migratory birds, the most important of which are osprey, gray-
backed pelican, black headed gulls, herons, sooty falcon and other species
of turtledoves. In addition, the Islands are home to some lizards and snakes.

• Sustainable development and management of rangelands and forests and combating desertification.
• National Program for Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Development.
Prince Mishal Bin Majed, governor of Jeddah, launched yesterday at the governorate office, the National Program for Environment and Sustainable Development Awareness.
He said, in the presence of government officials and media, that they aim to spread environment culture among members of the society and enhance the collaboration between public sector and NGOs to reach a sustainable environment.
The three year program will promote positive behavior and will aim to safeguard the land and sea environment and protect public places. On the long run the program will put forward new methods to insure sustainability and protect the environment in line with Vision 2030. The program targets Saudis, expatriates and visitors.
During the three year program, the environmentalists will address issues like climate change, recycling, pollution, wildlife, green building, environmental citizenship and will aim to reduce the use of energy and water. Special programs will be given to sports, women and kids.
The program will hold its activities at the Jeddah Waterfront, district centers, Historic Jeddah, government departments, universities, schools, hotels, banks, sports clubs, restaurants and companies.
The program will provide free training courses and rehabilitation programs. Special programs are devoted to youth to help them get job opportunities.
