April 2014 Issue #1

Greetings SDC alumni!

I am thrilled to share what God is doing in the community of SDC. January 20th was an historic day in the life of SDC. I was blessed to see 2,000 people join us in celebrating the move of the college to the City of Santee. This move is essential as we advance our mission to engage Christians in an academic thriving community. We have begun and will continue to prepare the next generation of Christian leaders to impact the wolrd for Chirst.

Thank you for paving the way for both our current and future students to have the opporutnity to pursue a liberal arts education in an institution that is founded on TRUTH, PURPOSE and IMPACT. I am constantly reminded of God’s goodness and am humbled that he has chosen SDC to be that vessel. SDC is flourishing and I thank you for your continued prayers and partnership as we remain committed to honoring our Biblical heritage and advancing our future.

Sincerely,

Paul Ague, Ph.D.President

How did your passion for photography begin?

I have always loved taking pictures and documenting my life and the lives of my friends and family. In 2004, my friends pulled their money to buy me my first digital camera and from then on I was all about photography. A couple years later I traded that camera for my first DSLR (a Canon Rebel), and began really learning how to work with exposure and aperture and everything that goes into taking a picture without just setting it on auto. In 2009, my husband joined me in this endeavor and we began taking family portraits together for our friends who were beginning to have kids.

When did you open“Next to me Studios”?

We began seriously contemplating moving into wedding photography when a friend of ours asked us to cover parts of her wedding day. The photographer she hired was only going to be there for a few hours, and she wondered if we’d take the pictures of her getting ready and the reception afterward. Chris and I fell in love with shooting weddings after that experience. On February 14, 2011 we officially started Next to Me Studios and began expanding to wedding photography. Chris and I have had a blast the last few years, getting to be part of so many great weddings. We’ve made some really good friends along the way, which is an added bonus of being so intimately part of a couple’s wedding day. Both of us love to create beautiful images, and we are constantly striving to find new and unique ways to capture memories.

What is one of your favoritememories from SDC?

So many memories! Off the top of my head I loved being part of intramurals, especially ultimate frisbee, random Saturday morning flag football games, going to the Price is Right during sophomore year, and little events like city wide scavenger hunts and Get-Your-Roommate-a-Date nights.

SDC Partners with American Eagle Airlines

San Diego Christian (SDC) announces an agreement with American Eagle Airlines that will allow our aviation students a direct pathway to a career with commercial airlines. A recent agreement with American Eagle Airlines will give graduates of SDC’s Aviation program more opportunities to launch their airline careers by creating a “pipeline” from collegiate aviation - through flight instructing - to a guaranteed job with the regional airline. After flying two years with AEA, pipeline pilots get a guaranteed interview with parent company, American Airlines.

Qualfications:

*Graduate from SDC with a Bachelor Degree in Aviation.

*Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5

*Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in aviation courses.

*Complete the following certificates at SDC

- Instrument Rating- Pilots may substitute the CFII

certificate obtained at SDC if they completed their Instrument

rating elsewhere.- Commercial Certificate

*Multi-Engine Rating

IN THE NEWS

Captain Denny Breslin, SDC Director of Aviation, and a former American Airlines pilot, announced the new agreement where American Eagle will hire SDC’s graduates who meet requirements ranging from college GPA and excellence in flight skills, to flight time minimums for its Intructor Pipeline Program.

“The program helps ensure we have the airline-qualified pilots we need for the future and eases the transition from school to the airline for program participants,” said Nicholas Brice, who negotiated the deal for Eagle’s pilot recruitment. “The participation of schools like San Diego Christian in our program is a win-win for both us and graduates looking for careers as commercial pilots.”

The so-called pipeline program allows pilots with commercial and instrument ratings to interview with the ariline and be accepted as undergraduates. Upon graduation, pipeline pilots would be paid to flight instruct SDC students until they reach the minimum flight hours for employment as a first officer with AEA.

Thanksgiving in AprilSteve Whitten (‘79)

survival. The difficult time that they had endured gave them a perspec-tive that they would not have had otherwise. The same is true for us today. As we reflect on all that we have been through and where God has brought us we give thanks, not just for his provision, but for the journey as well. God is faithful.

Giving thanks is a choice we make. It requires us to take our eyes off of ourselves for a moment and direct them outward.

Giving thanks is a choice we make when we stop focusing on what we don’t have and give thanks for all that God has provided. If we are not thankful for what we have we are not likely to be thankful for what we hope to get.

Giving thanks is a choice to accept, nay embrace the circumstances in our lives that we do not have the power to change and look at them as opportunities for growth.

Giving thanks is a continuing attitude of acknowledgement that every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Fa-ther of lights.

An attitude of thankfulness is a sign of spiritual health. We cannot be thankful and simultaneously

As I sit here in my office on our new campus at San Diego Christian looking north to the mountains I am struck by a deep and abiding sense of gratefulness. God has been so good. San Diego Christian has been a part of my life both as a student and as a faculty member. Now I am looking out of my win-dow to the mountains in the north and see the bustling activity on the campus below, I am so grateful, what an amazing God we serve. I know this is the month of April, but I am overcome with a spirit of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. Af-ter all, Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday. It harkens back to a time when William Bradford wrote these words “ I now your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye pilgrims, with your wives and little ones, do gather at ye meeting house, on ye hill, between the hours of 9 and 12 in the daytime, on Thursday, November ye 29th of the year 1623, and the third year since ye pilgrims landed on ye Plymouth Rock, there listen to ye pastor, and render thanksgiving to ye almighty God for all His blessings.” Those pilgrims had suffered through 2 harsh winters and would not likely have lived through a third if not for the kindness of the Native Amer-icans who took pity on them and provided them with the means of

complain, be negative or covetous or depressed. A grateful heart will drive out all of these negative ele-ments that can dominate our lives and replace them with the fruits of the spirit.

So, I am declaring every Thursday of every month for the rest of the year to be a day of thanksgiving.

As one of my best friends is always careful to remind me, “we have a lot to be thankful for.”

Steve married Marguerite in April of 1981 and God has blessed

him with four children and one grandchild. He loves shepherding

and mentoring SDC students so that they can impact the

world for Christ.

ATHLETICS

San Diego Christian to Add Tennis in 14-15SANTEE, Calif. – San Diego Chris-tian College athletics is pleased to announce the addition of Men’s and Women’s Tennis starting in the 2014-2015 academic year. SDC will now have 11 competitive teams in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) and National Association Intercollegiate Athlet-ics (NAIA). “With the addition of men’s and women’s tennis, we continue to move our athletic department for-ward,” said SDC Athletic Director Kyle Ferguson. “Tennis is a natu-ral fit in Southern California and GSAC competition is at the highest level in the NAIA. Most impor-tantly, however, is the opportunity to use athletics to help spiritually develop men and women to impact the world for Christ.” The two teams will be playing their matches at Lake Murray Tennis Club (pictured) in San Diego. Lake Murray Tennis Club is a non-profit corporation that includes 10 tennis courts owned by the city of San Diego.

“With the campus relocation to Santee, we are blessed to utilize the Lake Murray Tennis Club,” Fergu-son said. “We are thankful to the LMTC President Ernie Kovaks and the LMTC board for their willing-ness to partner with us as we call this beautiful facility our home.”

“We will continue to place the spiritual growth of our athletes as our top priority. That does not, however, mean we sacrifice success in the classroom or on the athletic courts,” Ferguson continued. “We look to tennis to provide another avenue where we can allow the Lord to use SDC to develop these young men and women in their spiritual life, academics, and athlet-ics.” SDC Athletics is also welcoming Priscilla Jensen as the coach for the Men’s and Women’s Tennis team. Jensen will be doing double duty as she was also named the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country coach.

Jensen was born and raised in the Netherlands where her fam-ily still resides. She won various tennis tournaments and leagues in Europe while also being on the Varsity High School tennis and cross-country team. She was named MVP and seeded No. 1 in High School in singles, doubles and mix doubles and reached sec-ond place in the ISST that governs 22 schools in Europe and The Middle East.

Jensen was recruited by NCAA Div. I schools and was ready to

move overseas, until she acceptedChrist and decided to attend Biola University instead. She received her B.A. and M.A. in Intercultur-al Studies/International Business from Biola and played tennis and soccer. Jensen was seeded No. 1 in singles and doubles on the team. San Diego Christian is looking for interested athletes and will host an open tryout in conjunction with a College Visit Day on April 11.
