HowPaper Is Made Types Of PaperIt all starts with logs th at aredebarked, turned into woodchips, then placed in digesters, which arelike hug e pressure cookers. T hiscooking process separates cellulosefiber the most important paper-making ingredient from the gums, resins and other impure materialsthat b ind them together. Theseimpurities are the n washed away, thecellulose is screened ou t, an d ch em ical wood pulp is created.

Mu ltiple stages of bleach ing com enext, because the whiter the pulp, the w hiter th e finished pap er will be.Co nstan t quality checks are mandatory along the way to insure maximu m brightness without damage tofiber strength. Over-bleaching canweaken paper in muc h th e same waythat i t can ruin clothing. After bleaching, the pulp isrefined and blended with otherpaperm aking m aterials, using a special, prede termin ed formula for eachgrade. T he n it is piped on to th e

uwetend" of the paper ma chine. It is interesting to note that paperis 99% filtered water and only 1%papermaking ingredients in thebeginning. But, as the paper movestoward the dry end of the ma chine, all bu t 5 % of this water is remo ved bygravity, mechanical means, andevaporation through heated drums. Some "plain" papers require nofurther finishing, w hile others can b ecoated on the paper ma chine . For

still others , th e coating takes placeoff the paper machine as a separateoperation.Generally speaking, coated papersare supercalendered by being passedbetween a series of polished steel andcompressed cotton rollers, underpressure, to increase their gloss andsmoothness.

Th e papers manufactured by S.D .Warren Com pany come in a varietyof weights and finishes, w ith eachbest suited for a particular purpose. We will discuss each category in general terms her e, and a detailed listingof available Warren grades is locatedon page 38.U N C O A T E D O R" P L A I N " P A P E R SA N T I Q U EA n a ntiq ue surface is relativelyrough, and th e paper itself is bulky.A good example is Old e Style Wov e.It and other antique papers are limited to type and line engravings byletterpress and may be used for thereprodu ction of simple halftones byoffset. Commercially publishedbooks are an important end use, because high bulk is generally animportant considerat ion.M .F (M ACHINE FINISH)M.F. papers are used for basically th esame purposes as antique, except thatthey are smoothe r and h ave less bulk.Thu s, they can be printed with mo redetailed illustrations. Warren's "1854"is in this category.W OV E OFFSETWo ve Offset is an unc oated paperwith a smooth surface tha t can be usedas an economical text paper. ScottOffset is an ex am ple of this quality.

C O A T E D P A P E R SM A T T EM atte paper, such as Patina , has alayer of mineral particles called"coating pigm ents" applied to its surface which makes it smoother andmore ink receptive. Designed forboth sheet-fed and web offset printing, these papers are suitable for single and process color w ork.

C O A T E DThis paper is created when a muc hthic ker layer or layers of coatings areapplied, imparting greater smoothness and, consequently, better printing quality than that of pigmentedpaper. It com es in bo th gloss and dusurfaces, as well as embossed finisheTop quality grades like Cameo willreproduce the finest halftones byoffset lithography.Co ated papers like Lustro Web ardesigned to meet the requirements oweb offset printing, while others aresuitable for gravure.W A R R E N F L OFlokote, Warrenflo, WarrenfloWeb, and Webflo are made by theWarrenflo process? Thes e papersrepresent a dramatic innovation inpapermaking, which el iminatessupercalendering. It is exclusive tothe Warren Company.Warrenflo papers offer the printincapabilities of regular coateds, buthav e substantially greater bulk, givinth e heft and feel of a high er basisweight. They also offer considerablesavings on postage for mailing piecesbecause of the higher bulk to weightrat io, when compared to conventionally coated and calendered papers.Flokote was the first Warrenflo paperto be introduced.C A S T - C O A T E DAn other m ethod, k nown as cas t-coating, results in a mirror-like finiswith exceptionally h igh gloss, givingthe finest possible printing surface.Lusterkote Cover One Side is anexample .

O F F S E T L I T H O G R A P H YOffset, or planog raphic prin ting, isbased on the principle that oil andwater do no t m ix. Offset presses contain three cylinders, and the printingsurface is no t raised. On e cy linderholds the plate, parts of which havebeen chemically treated to repel ink,and parts of which have been madeink receptive. T his cylinder transfersthe image to the second (blanket)cylinder, which then transfers theimage to the paper carried by thethird (impression) cylinder.W E B O F F SE T L I T H O G R A P H YThis high-speed print ing methoddiffers from regular offset lithographybecause a roll of printin g p aper isfed into the press, paper is usuallyprinted on both sides simultaneouslyand the ink is usually oven-driedbefore being sheeted or folded intosignatures.G R A V U R EGrav ure is an intaglio process, asopposed to letterpress printing's reliefprocess. This means that the image isetched below the surface of the plate.A gravure press has tw o cylinders one for printing and the other forimpression in add ition to a systemthat applies ink to the printing cylinder, then scrapes away the excesswith a blade.

LETTERPRESSIn letterpress printing, ink is appliedto a raised surface and transferred tothe pap er by pressure. Th ree familiartypes of presses are plat en , flat-bedand rotary.F L E X O G R A P H YThis is an inexpensive printingmethod, used primarily for reproduction where exceptional fidelity is notnecessary. The system is a simpletwo-roller type, utilizing rubberplates with a raised image, a nd w ateror solvent based inks for fast drying.Flexograph y is often used to prin t oncellophane, milk cartons, vinyl, business forms and notion tags.

Comparison Of Basis bights*Ov er th e years, as various kinds ofpapers were perfected, eac h developed its own category of basis weightsand sizes. You'll note that the weightsof the papers on this table are determined on the basis of different sizes.(Refer to "Basis Weight" and "Substance" in the glossary for a betterunderstanding of this.)It is possible, as the chart indicates,to interchange these types of paper. For example, if you wan ted a 20 lb.bon d paper and it was no t available,yo u could specify (providing thesurface characteristics were suitable)a 50 lb. book paper for the job.

Paper Spoilage Allowances*T he offset press work and bindin gspoilage allowances are based onsheets of stock required for the joband no t impressions for the job. Awork and turn job of 5,000 quanti typrinted in one co lor is calculated as2,500 sheets (quantity required forwork and tu rn form wh ich will allowtwo out of a sheet) .Care should be taken to m akecertain to use the correct figure w he ndetermining the num ber of sheets .For instance, 5,000 press sheetsof 25 x 38 would take the 5,000 figurewh en figuring press work but wouldtake the 10,000 figure when figuringfolding, etc., if this sheet had to becut in half to 19 x 25 before th e binding operation.Based on the experience of eachplant, these figures may be modified. The percentage of spoilage can bereduced slightly on large runs w hereplant experience so dictates.
