Video• Video is a series of images played one after the other.

• Each image is known as a frame.

• When storing a section of video, we are storing a series of images.

Frame Rate• Frame rate is the term for the number of frames displayed in

one second.

• Frame rate is expressed in frames per second (fps).

• 24/25 fps is the standard frame rate for TV and film, but higher frame rates are possible e.g. 120 fps for UHDTV

Key Terms Frame rate – number of frames displayed per second (fps)

Higher frame rate = smoother motion but more data

Resolution – dimensions of the frame on pixelsHigher resolution = better quality image in frame but more data

Bit depth – number of colours which can be displayed per pixelHigher bit depth = better quality image colours but more data

Graphics Card A graphics card process video data on a computer system.

A graphics card converts video data into electronic signals and sends them to your monitor.

Graphics Card Has a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) which is a processor

designed to handle graphics calculations. This frees up the main CPU allowing to perform other tasks

Has its own memory (VRAM) and so doesn’t need to use the computer’s main memory. VRAM is faster than main RAM.
