    LABORATORY Today SPD is an interna-tional laboratory for swapping experi-ences, for getting in touch with compa-nies and professionals, for developingprojects always keeping the balance be-tween experimental reserch and a solidorientation towards the market needs.Throughout the year students are en-gaged in different projects - either in-tensive one-week workshops or studioexperiences lasting the whole semester- allowing them to acquire a global vi-sion of the job and round off sounderprofessional skills.

    ACADEMICS  Master’s and One-YearCourses have limited entries. Admissionis based on the assessment of the port-folio and relevant background and on amotivational interview with the candi-

    date. Courses generally begin in Octoberand finish by December of the followingyear. Classes are held in English.Attendance is compulsory.

    The programmes demand full-time com-mitment including regular coursework,individual and group study as well asthe internship or the preparation of thefinal project. Scholarships and tuitionwaivers offered also in association with

    academic partners are available for highpotential candidates.

    RECOGNITION AND QUALITY SYSTEMIn 2009 SPD implemented the UNI ENISO 9001:2008 Standard, obtaining theQuality Management System Certifi-cate that assures that quality manage-ment standards are in place. SPD is rec-ognized as an educational institutionsby Regione Lombardia. The Master’scourses offered by SPD are organized incollaboration with partnering Universi-ties and award academic credits under

    MISSION  Creativity is a daily task atSPD. Since its foundation in 1954 ithas welcomed an extraordinary com-

    munity of students from various coun-tries and backgrounds. Everyone hasan unequalled opportunity: they workside by side with excellent professionals,engage in dialogue with a number ofacademic partners and swap experienc-es with young talents from all over theworld. All of this takes place in Milan,a city with an incredibly close-to-handand accessible heritage made up of ar-chitecture and design, production andbusiness, communication and art.

    METHODOLOGY At SPD every student isfollowed individually by a faculty made upof designers, professionals from various

    fields and visiting tutors. Patricia Urqui-ola, Denis Santachiara, Ross Lovegroveand Chris Bangle among the others

    have been lecturing at SPD. Teaching isarranged into intensive workshops, stu-dio classes, theoretical lectures, seminarsand visits. Researchwork carried out incollaboration with leading companiessuch as Volkswagen, Beiersdorf, Polt-rona Frau Group, Microsoft, Heineken,Alfa Romeo, Alias is a crucial experienceat SPD. These projects are developed ac-cording to a comprehensive approachwhich is a proving ground for the stu-dent’s skills, from the concept idea toits execution. The result of this work is

    translated into high quality educationwith a professional orientation.The school boasts affiliations to the mostimportant organizations in the field suchas ADI (Italy’s Industrial Design Asso-ciation), AIAP (Italian Graphic designers’Association), and ASFOR (Italian associa-tion for management development). It isa member of the Cumulus network thatbrings together the most prestigious de-sign academies worldwide.

    STRUCTURE AND PROGRAMSSPD’s offering of postgraduate educa-tion consists of annual Master’s degreesfrom five different departments: Indus-trial Design, Interior Design, Transporta-tion and Car Design, Visual Design, WebMedia Design.The catalogue of full time annual pro-grammes includes also One-Year Cours-es in Product Design or Visual Design

    addressed to candidates with an aca-demic background that is not relevantto the selected area of further studies.One-Year Courses provide a balancedcombination of theoretical teachingand project-based training. They canalso be intended as a foundation to theMasters.The school’s offer of advanced educationis completed with intensive specializa-tion programmes, one-week experiences,summer workshops and technical train-ing. Every year SPD organizes a densecalendar of lectures given by interna-tional speakers. Participation is open tothe general public.

    SPD came intoexistence at the verysame time as Italiandesign was developingas an industrialand cultural asset,contributing to itsinternationalrecognition. It wasfounded in 1954in Milan, as the firstItalian school of design.

    HISTORY SPD was founded in 1954 byNino di Salvatore, painter and theorist ofthe project based application of the prin-ciples of the Gestalt psichologie. Since itsvery beginning Scuola Politecnica di De-sign programmatically brought togethervarious disciplines from product to visualdesign up to car design. The school pio-neered design education thanks to itssolid grounding and to this peculiar ap-proach integrating different domains:ergonomics, art, perception studies,semiotics. The founder’s ties with the ar-tistic community have gathered aroundthe school names of the first rank. BrunoMunari, Max Huber, Pino Tovaglia, Gio

    Ponti, Rodolfo Bonetto, Heinz Waiblhave all lectured at SPD.

    AWARDS  This brilliant activity hasbeen rewarded with major recognitionsthrough the years. Just to name a few,SPD was selected for the exhibition atthe Venice Biennale in 1986, its workswere displayed at the Carrousel du

    Louvre and at the Centre Pompidou inParis, a piece by its students was partof 2010 edition of the Triennale DesignMuseum, Serie e Fuoriserie, curated byAndrea Branzi with Silvana Annichiarico.SPD was awarded the Gold Medal at theX Triennale di Milano and the prestigiousCompasso d’Oro prize in 1994 for its 60year long progression of achievements indesign education.

    ALUMNI  Thanks to this blend of praticeand culture, methodology and experi-ence, the school has brought forwardmany talents over the years. Aldo Cibic,Ferruccio Laviani, Christoph Radl, Cino

    Zucchi, Elio Carmi, Marco Ferreri, Mau-rizio Di Robiliant, Martì Guixé, LorenzoDamiani have all studied at SPD. Names towatch closely from the newest generationare Cedomir Pakusevskij, Erasmo Ciufo,Jorge Manes Rubio, Salvatore Franzese.

    AIM  Contemporary interiors as a cul-tural system require a broader set ofprofessional skills. The course promotescreative thinking along with sounddesign abilities and an architecturalorientation.

    FEATURES  Interior design is a clearlyexpressed system created to respond tomultiple demands for efficiency, com-fort or entertainment. Interiors triggera sense of personal identity, aggrega-tion or emotional engagement withthe introduction of sensory experiencesor through the use of carefully wovennarrative threads. Course contents dealwith concept design, space planning,interior layout and display. The pro-gramme provides discerning insightsinto the language of materials, lighting,colour, furniture and the integration oftechnical components. The relation withthe building is deeply investigated. Allthese aspects meet in the studio class-es led by renowned professionals that

    support the creation of a working knowl-edge base. Collaborations with brandsand institutions enable the students tocomprehend how interiors communicatethe brand values in a retail environmentor in a corporate space through the use

    of architectural elements and spatialgraphics. As a result of this education,on the one hand students are encour-aged to develop a conceptual approachin design practice gaining a strategic un-derstanding of elements and processesinvolved. On the other hand, technicalrepresentation and architectural detail-ing serve the students as a mirror forreviewing their design and refining theirprofessional skills.

    ENTRY  Upon selection the Master ad-mits graduates in Interior Design orArchitecture, Product Design or equiv-alents and students from academiesof applied arts; candidates who havegained significant professional experi-ence in the field.

    AIM  Industrial design is responsible forthe most common consumer goods aswell as for new and innovative artifacts.It is also what lays behind the tools andthe processes involved in their produc-tion and distribution.

    FEATURES The Master provides anoverall experience in product design,from the preliminary concept to its re-finement, from physical and digital rep-resentation to the communication ofthe project.The educational approach stresses theexperience provided to the user and thesocial meaning of the product. Students

    are proposed an open, interdisciplinarymethodology that values their own cul-tural background and emphasizes the

    role of dialogue and mutual exchange inthe creative process.The association with major industrialpartners has the purpose of perfectingthe education by providing students withchallenging tasks that allow them toface the relationships with business andorganizations in a mature way. Techni-cal training is particularly emphisized tobuild up solid professional groundings.Students can use modelling and com-puter design laboratories equipped withthe most advanced softwares.

    AIMS  Alongside micromobility solutionsor people mover systems that respond tothe challenge of the new megacities andtheir fast-growing economies, today’scar design paradigm can also be broughtinto question in the urge to better inter-pret new social habits and environmentalissues.

    FEATURES  The Master’s programmeembraces the entire design developmentprocess by researching into new experi-ential concepts, redefining architecturalsolutions and moving forward with newcriteria for comfort and efficiency. Parallelto the technical training, studio projects

    are organized in collaboration with ma- jor car companies. In particular SPD hassigned a long term educational partner-ship with Volkswagen Group Designinvolving the participation of designersfrom the various brands - from Audi toLamborghini - into the teaching activites.

    After the initial exploration, studentsmove forward into design concepts andtheir refinement up to both physical anddigital modelling. It’s a long process thatdemands a high level of personal com-mittment and flexibility, organizationaland time management skills as well as astrong attitude to teamwork. Projects aresubject to group critiques and critiqueswith outsider reviewers. Transportationdesigners thus acquire a constant spurto innovation both in form language andfunction, allied with the understandingof engineering and production processes.

    AIM  An intense year-long training of-fered in two different directions – Prod-uct Design and Visual Design – is spe-cifically intended for candidates witha degree that is not relevant to thefield of interest. Both these extensive

    programmes guide students to tackledesign practice through a number ofprojects of increasing complexity. In themeantime they build up solid ground-ings in methodology and operationaltechniques. One-Year Courses can alsobe intended as a foundation to the Mas-ter’s programmes in their respective aca-demic areas.

    PRODUCT This One-Year Course allowsa challenging experience in product andinterior design highlighting their mutualrelations and the specific set of skillsrequired. The academic approach inte-grates design practice with theoreticaland technical teaching.The programme conveys operationalskills: colour theory and practice, techni-cal drawing, 2D and 3D representationtechniques, general knowledge of ma-terials and their production processes,photography and computer graphicsto prepare effective presentations. Theproject based workshops offer gradu-ally more complete experiences both inproduct and interior design. The taskssubmitted embrace the entire creativeworkflow from the concept up to itsrepresentation and communication. Theabilities thus developed over the year aredirectly in relation with the Master pro-grammes in Interior or Industrial Designthat can also be intended as the idealcontinuation of the One Year Course.

    AIM  The Master is intended to enablestudents to correctly develop and imple-ment projects in a web-based environ-ment. The aim is the creation of differ-ent professional profiles within the webmedia design area which are able toplan, produce and share through the on-line communities a new generation ofcontent and services in an effective way.

    FEATURE  The Master offers an experi-mental pathway at the forefront of de-sign, marketing and technology. Theplan of studies blends art direction anddesign contents with solid technical skillsand a comprehensive background in

    digital communication. The programmedevelops in the interplay between theo-retical teaching and practical tasks.

    Project-based activities in particular arecentral to the learning experience andleverage abilities and information ac-quired in the other courses. All projectsfollow a proper workflow encompass-ing the definition of the digital strategyand its relevant objectives, concept andinformation design up to front/back endprogramming. As the user experience isincreasingly developing through socialmedia, companies are changing theirbusiness accordingly. This new and thrill-ing scenario is deeply investigated withspecific regard to the integration of con-tent and navigation flow between web-sites and social network platforms andviceversa. The overall didactic experience

    provides the students with professionalabilities that allow them to engage indialogue with the different figures in-volved in digital media projects.

    ENTRY  Upon selection, the Master ad-mits graduates in Media Studies, Com-munication and Graphics, IT Sciences,Design or Architecture and their equiva-lents or candidates who have gainedsignificant professional experience inthe field.

    LOCATION  The whole city of Milanprovides unique opportunities. It is theworld capital of design, furniture andfashion; it is a city of the present, cul-turally vibrant and business-wise. Thedesign week held every year is the majorinternational event attracting creativeprofessionals and manufacturers fromall over the world. During the fashionweeks as well the entire city is trans-

    formed into a showroom where presen-tations and events take place nonstop.Around SPD there’s a dense networkof art galleries, architectural and designstudios and a lively university district.The area is quickly and easily connectedto the centre by subway: piazza Duomo,the main monuments and museums canbe reached within minutes.

    SERVICES The Academic Office is avail-able for information on entry and enrol-ment procedures. In order to facilitateforeign students, the whole admissionand enrolment process can be con-ducted on-line. The personal motiva-tion interview and further possible testscan be taken at distance by email andSkype video call. A visit to SPD’s facilitiescan also be easily arranged by appoint-ment. The school staff provides foreignstudents with help in obtaining visas,residence permits, and health coveragein Italy. It also offers assistance in find-ing an accommodation in private apart-ments or students’ residences.

    LANGUAGE  English is the official lan-guage at SPD. Master classes are heldin English, an intermediate level of profi-ciency is required.

    VISUAL DESIGN Graphic design isviewed as an instrument of representa-tion and communication with its ownset of principles, practices and tools.Through a series of creative exercises -developed both digitally and with mockups - students will steadily refine thecritical skills required to face stimulatingprojects with a professionally consciuosattitude. The study plan embraces all thebasic elements of the visual alphabet andits syntactic structure: colour theory andits application, lettering and typography,layout and compositional design ma-trixes for controlling text and imagery bydefining their inner hierarchy up to the

    exploration into non-grid based systems.As a result of SPD’s peculiar historicalheritage, tuition pays specific attentionto the mechanisms underlying humanvisual perception and constantly stressesthe ties of graphic representatation withthe cultural aspects rooteed in arts andhumanities.

    This comprehensive approach values thecultural background of the students andenhances the potential of their ideas andinsights in a professional perspective. Thecourse can also be intended as a founda-tion to the Master in Visual or Web andMultimedia Design.
