First reading Isaiah 2:1–5 (1A)

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come, the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the

highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it; many peoples shall come and say:

“Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain,

to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.”

For from Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord

from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples. They shall beat their swords

into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks;one nation shall not raise the sword

against another, nor shall they train for war again.O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Palm Sunday of the PaSSion of the lord– aPril 9, 2017 –

THE COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD’S ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM

On this day, the Church celebrates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish the Paschal Mystery of his death and resurrection. The memorial of this event is included in every Mass, with the Procession or the Solemn Entrance before the principal Mass and the Simple Entrance before the other Masses. The Solemn Entrance, but not the Procession, may be repeated before other Masses.

FIRST FORM: THE PROCESSIONAt the scheduled time, the assembly gathers in a suitable place distinct from the church to which the procession will move. The faithful carry palm or other branches. The Priest and ministers put on red vestments for Mass and go to the place where the people have assembled. Meanwhile, the following or another appropriate chant is sung:

The Priest then greets the people and, making the sign of the cross, invites them to take a full part in the celebration. He may use these or similar words:

Dear brethren (brothers and sisters),… …we may have a share also in his Resurrection and in his life.

Afterwards the Priest, with hands extended, says one of the following:

Let us pray. Almighty ever-living God,… …Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Or Increase the faith of those who place their hope in you, O God,… …Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

The Priest sprinkles the branches with holy water in silence. Then the account of the Lord’s entrance is proclaimed from one of the four Gospels. This is done by a Deacon or, if there is no Deacon, by the Priest.

Gospel ReadinG Matthew 21:1–11 (37A)The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me. And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, ‘The master has need of them.’ Then he will send them at once.” This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled:

Say to daughter Zion,“Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;hosanna in the highest.”

And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. After the Gospel, a brief homily may be given. Before the Procession begins, the Priest, Dea-con, or a lay minister may address the people with these or similar words:

Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), like the crowds who acclaimed Jesus in Jerusalem, let us go forth in peace.

Or Let us go forth in peace. All respond: In the name of Christ. Amen.

firST rEading Acts of the Apostles 2:14, 22–33 (46A)

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: “You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words. You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man com-mended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For David says of him:

I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.

“My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to this day. But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption. God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him forth, as you see and hear.”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
