Digital adoption, trig-gered by the Covid-19and the regulatoryrequirements for multi-national companies to storeand process user data withinthe country’s borders, hasresulted in a huge demandfor data centres.

“The pandemic has been amassive catalyst for digitaladoption,” said ShobhitAgarwal, managing directorand chief executive officer ofproperty consultant AnarockCapital. “Work-from-homecompulsions, online education,video-based medical consulta-tions, a huge increase in e-com-merce, and business-relatedvideoconferencing and webi-nars are increasing the demandfor data centres. Furthermore,the government’s move tomake data localisation manda-tory ensures a promising futurefor data centres.”

According to Anarock’sreport, data centres in the topeight cities such as Mumbai,Chennai, Bengaluru, andHyderabad occupy 7.5 millionsquare feet of space and anadditional 10 million squarefeet is likely to be added overthe next two-three years.Immediately after Indiaimposed a lockdown, therewas a 25-35 per cent increase indata centre capacity usage ascompanies began to overhaultheir digital infrastructure, theconsultant observed.

“Data storage in India hasgrown eight times to 2.8zettabytes since 2014, drivenby rapid adoption of Cloud,growth in digital transactionsand e-commerce,” said B SRao, vice-president (market-

ing), CtrlS. “Once the proposedPersonal Data Protection Bill,2019, is enacted, all multina-tionals operating in India willhave to localise data. This willbe a key growth driver forIndian data centres, besidesemerging technologies, suchas the internet of things (IoT),

5G, and Big Data.”According to industry esti-

mates, the data centre out-sourcing market in India isworth over $2 billion and isprojected to grow at a com-pound annual growth rate of25 per cent to reach $5 billionby 2023-24.

Godrej Properties is seeingreasonable valuation from itspartners in joint develop-ment (JD) or joint ventureproposals, said its ChairmanPirojsha Godrej in a video callwith journalists onWednesday.

“Many developers werefacing challenging situationseven before the Covid-19 pan-demic. The current situationis increasing opportunitiesand we are well placed to usethem,” affirmed Godrej.

The company raised~1,000 crore through theissuance of non-convertibledebentures.

On the use of funds, hesaid: “We have acquired manyland parcels and signed JDs.We have to launch them. Weare looking at new oppor-tunities and invest inthem,” he said.

He said the company wouldlook at both organic and inor-ganic opportunities for growth.

Godrej said he is bullish

on the medium- and long-term prospects for residentialreal estate.

“Short-term is difficult topredict. We are going througha tough year,” he said.

The company on Wedne-sday posted a pre-tax loss of~14.69 crore in the June quar-ter of 2020-21, compared to aprofit before tax of ~140 crorein the first quarter of 2019-20.

Godrej said: “With thelockdown in place for most ofthe quarter, constructionactivities during the periodwere extremely limited, lead-ing to almost no revenuerecognition and to poor oper-ating cash flows. At the sametime, our teams demonstrat-ed agility by relying on digitalsales tools to achieve strongsales, thereby delivering ourhighest-ever market share ina quarter.”

“The current crisis will addfurther momentum to theprocess of consolidation thatis underway in the sector and we will continue to

focus on rapidly growing our market

share,” he added.

Adani Gas reported a 49 per cent dip in profit before tax for theJune quarter, at ~62.58 crore, against ~122.7 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Profit after tax for the company also fell 42 per cent to ~46.33 crore. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, andamortisation was at ~86 crore — a hit of 41 per cent.

Sales for Adani Gas also took a hit, with volumes down 53 per cent. Revenue from operations for the company alsofell in tandem to ~207 crore in the quarter under review —a dip of 57 per cent. Executives from the company in an earning call said the trend for sales volumes had seen constant improvement since the relaxation of the nationwidelockdown starting April 22. AMRITHA PILLAY

Bharti Airtel on Wednesdayannounced a multi-yearstrategic pact with AmazonWeb Services (AWS) – thecloud services arm of theretail giant – to deliver Cloudsolutions to large as well assmall and medium enterprise(SME) customers in India.

Puneet Chandok, presi-dent, commercial business,India and South Asia,Amazon Internet Services,said it is a 50:50 strategicpartnership.

“This collaboration givescustomers a single point ofcontact when dealing withcomplex migrations or cus-tom-built solutions. Airtel hasdemonstrated a strong com-mitment to our shared cus-tomers, and we look forwardto continue working with it tobring innovative solutions tothe market,” Chandok said.

According to the IDCSemiannual Public CloudServices Tracker – Forecast2019 H2 – the public Cloudservices market in India islikely to touch $7.1 billion in2024, rising at a compoundannual growth rate (CAGR) of

20.3 per cent from $3.4 billionin 2020.

In addition, Airtel Cloudwill leverage AWS' innovationand transformation servicesacross analytics, data ware-housing, Internet of Things(IoT), and machine learning(ML) to help customers adoptnew services and migrate tothe Cloud from legacy infra-structure.

AWS services, Airtel's datacentre capabilities and network and telecoms offer-ings, it added.
