Inside the Industry

Get familiar with the industry and the marketplace so that you can make well-informed decisions. It’s all about what you know and who you know in the entertainment industry (plus your amazing writing skills).

1. What studios, networks, and platforms make your favorite movies and television shows? Ex: My favorite shows right now are Stranger Things on Netflix, It’s Always Sunny on FXX, and Jane the Virgin on the CW.

2. What kinds of content are these places buying and producing? Are they making movies, TV, or digital content in the same brand that you write? If not, who does?

3. Take a deeper look, and focus on the writers. See if you can find out where the showrunners of your favorite shows and/or the writers of your favorite movies are represented (both agencies and management offices). Lock in that information. These are places you can aspire to work at, be represented by, or network with. The same goes for the studios and networks above.

4. What industry news sources do you frequently read to keep on top of what’s buying, selling, and getting made? Deadline, Variety, IndieWire…

5. How often do you read scripts?

6. Are you aware of the latest spec sales? What would you like to read more of?

Is there anything coming out in the film market right now that resembles your idea? Check Google and Deadline Hollywood.

Does your idea play off of something that’s already been done but with a new twist? Technically, I guess we can say that everything has been, in fact, done before. Can you find that script or scripts in the same genre? Here are several script databases.
