Marabu – Competence in Colour

From the early days of screenprinting, Marabu has activelysupported this innovative tech-nology, not only in the Germanmarket but also abroad. In con-stant dialogue with the usersand their continuous new ideasand demands, Marabu has in-tensively promoted the develop-ment of screen printing throughits own innovative products andapplication techniques.

Today, Marabu is a worldwideknown brand with high-qualityprinting inks having successfullybeen established thanks to thenumerous distribution partnersand subsidiaries in approximately70 countries.

“Competence in Colour“ standsas the result of many years ofintensive work but also for apermanent challenge to offertechnologically high-class,application-friendly products by innovative and continuousdevelopment now and in thefuture.

The fast growing importance ofnew ink technologies such asUV-curable systems, taking intoconsideration the rising environ-mental consciousness, representsa special task for us. In manyfields of use, these systems allowimportant increases in qualityand productivity through quickercuring and constant, reprodu-cible production processes.

Responsibility for People andEnvironment

Marabu is certified through theQuality Management SystemsDIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN ENISO 14001. For Marabu it isdecisive that quality is not onlyexpected but part of our dailyroutine. The certification is under-stood as a continuing processleading to further improvementswithin the company, optimizingour products as well as ourservice. To protect the user frompossible health risks, one ofMarabu’s main targets is to dowithout particularly harmfulmaterials and to replace them – wherever technically feasible –with materials free of hazardsymbols.

ContentsIndustrial Screen Printing

Screen printing has become widelyused in many industrial plants overthe past years where finished pro-ducts or parts are decorated orprinted. The customers demandperfect solutions according toclearly defined requirements, strictquality control as per internationalstandards, or their own QM guide-lines.

Individual print products are pro-duced to order in specializedscreen printing shops. The extreme-ly large range of substrates de-mands a great deal of expertknowledge, experience, flexibility, and innovative ideas. With its vastrange of ink systems, Marabuoffers a solution for virtually everyprinting requirement.

Signs and scales – there is avariety of demands as to ad-hesion and resistance which areto be fulfilled by screen printinginks.

Mostly, signs are long-lastingproducts made of wet or pow-der-coated metals, aluminium,high-quality films, or weather-resistant plastics. For scales andfront panels, acrylics, poly-carbonate, or ABS are mostlyused.

Screen printing starts whereother print processes reach theirlimits! Whether glass, metals, paper, plastics or fabrics, screenprinting makes the best of it.

Electrical and HouseholdAppliances

The high requirements for re-sistance to chemical stress, hightemperatures, steam, and dailywear and tear are decisive for this field. According to thedifferent demands, 1- and 2-component solvent-based inks orUV-curable inks systems areavailable.

Sporting Goods

The field of sporting goods isvery comprehensive yet, indi-vidual so that each project mustbe looked at and worked onseparately. Whether a highdemand for mechanical andchemical resistance, a requestfor high opacity or gloss, or alarge colour range with verydifferent colour effects, screensolutions dominate.

Toys

Another very large field withdifferent substrates and de-mands from the market. Mostimportant for this application, however, is the compliance toDIN EN 71, part 3, a strengthand focus of Marabu’s inks foryears. Furthermore, Marabuinks are also perspiration andsaliva resistant; a best possiblechemical and mechanical re-sistance is guaranteed.

Textile Printing

The list of textiles being printedranges from material used forblinds and sunshades, to sportsbags, racket sleeves, T-shirts,and casual clothing.

Through a license agreementwith PANTONE®, Marabuoffers 9 PANTONE® basicshades in the ink seriesMarastar SR, Libragloss LIG,and Libraspeed LIS. The spe-cial pigmentation of these inksoffers a best premise to matchthe PANTONE® shades.

For a best possible colour match of the HKS® K range,Marabu has formulated theclassic 88 HKS® K colourshades specifically to screenprinting.

4 special HKS basic shadeswere developed in the ink series Marastar SR andLibraspeed LIS. By mixingthem with 13 well-known‘System 21’ basic shades, the complete HKS® K colourrange can be achieved. Thematching formulas are found in every HKS® K colour fan.

Marabu Ink Systems · Specifically selected

and optimally pigmented basic shades are the

solution for an almost unlimited range of brilliant

mixing shades – without abandoning the highest

possible opacity.

Existing colour reference systemssuch as e.g. PANTONE®* andHKS®** are often used for thedesign of printing motifs. Asthese colour patterns were ori-ginally developed for differentprinting processes like offset orfor coating, it is often difficult toreproduce them in screen print-ing.

The brilliance and transparencyof many PANTONE® shades canonly be achieved if accordinglybrilliant and luminous basicshades are available for mixing.Through a license agreementwith PANTONE®, Marabu offers 9 special PANTONE® basicshades in the ink series Mara-star SR, Libragloss LIG, andLibraspeed LIS. The special pig-mentation of these inks offers a best premise to match thePANTONE® shades.

For a best possible reproductionof the HKS® colour range inscreen printing, Marabu hasdeveloped four special HKS®

basic shades in the ink seriesMarastar SR and Libraspeed LIS.

Main Characteristics

In order to maximize opacityand brilliance of its colourshades, Marabu developed the“System 21” colour range someyears ago, emphasizing aboveall the high opacity of shades. Many ink types are still suppliedin these shades. Since then, colour shades per PANTONE®

and HKS® have become moresuccessful in design; the de-mand for brilliance more andmore important. To meet thisrequirement, Marabu has de-veloped a new colour systemwith brilliant colour shadestogether with utmost opacity:System Maracolor for solvent-based ink types – SystemUltracolor for UV-curable inktypes.

Product Range

In the enclosed Ink Character-istics Table you will find detailsshowing the colour system re-lated to each ink type. Pleaseask your Marabu distributor forthe corresponding colour cards.

System Maracolor

This colour range for solvent-based ink types includes 17intermixable basic shades. Thecombination of brilliant andopaque shades ensure an opti-mal reproduction of practicallyany popular reference systemfor colour design.

System Maracolor applies toall new ink series. Some of ourearlier series have been changedto the new colour system.

System Ultracolor

This system is designed for UV-curable ink types. For technicalreasons, they are partly for-mulated with pigments otherthan Maracolor and are mono-pigmented to facilitate UV-curing.

Therefore, we have restrictedthe new product range for UV inks to a selection of only 13 basic shades. These are marked with a UV after the shade

designation in the colour chart presented on this page. Theseinks are also intermixable andreflect in every respect the cur-rent high technical standards ofthe industry.
