ABOUT THE TREND

A sequin is defined in the dictionary as a small piece of shiny, often coloured, metal foil or plastic, usually round, to decorate garments. In our case, we scrapbookers and papercrafters are using them to add that little bit of “bling” to our pages. Manufacturers have seen this rising trend and some now sell coordinating sequin packs to complement their scrapbooking ranges. You can also buy sequins in packs from your local haberdashery or art supply store. You can sew them, stick them, arrange them in a pattern or create a shaker with them. The opportunities for use really are endless.

ABOUT MY LAYOUT

I chose to create a layout that is a bit of a “life lesson” to myself, to teach or remind me of something that I need to do. I chose a fun and cute collection of papers to create this layout and wanted to create a confetti look in a diagonal fashion across my page. To tie in the circular elements of sequins, I cut circles in a variety of sizes from coordinating papers and adhered them to my page. I then adhered bright-coloured sequins over the top. Although I placed them carefully and with precision on my page, I wanted the layout to look as if the sequins were simply scattered onto the page.

SequinsAn embellishment trend:

IDEAS AND TIPS Adhering sequins can be a pain. My favourite go-to adhesive is Glossy Accents by Ranger. However, a glue pen or a small glue dot can work just as well. You may need to invest in a pair of tweezers or a

sequin pick-up pencil (I got mine from D-lish Scraps), which will help you to pick up and place those pesky sequins where you want them. An embroidery yarn box is the perfect container to

hold your sequins. Plus they look super pretty in there from the outside!

MATERIALS

X-Press It 9in x 9in Stretched Canvas, Copic Various Ink (B21), Copic Colourless Blender, Paper Towel, FabScraps 12x12in Paper (C58001 Blueberry), X-Press It Tripletac, Paint Brush and Water, Various Embellishments

HOW TO

Put a few drops of Copic ink and Copic colourless blender onto a folded piece of paper towel. Rub the paper towel over the entire surface of the canvas.

Using a paint brush, apply an even layer of Tripletac to the side of the paper that you wish to transfer. You are adhering it face down, so remember that your image will be reversed. Lay your canvas on top of the paper and smooth out any bubbles or ridges by gently rubbing it. Trim off any excess paper and allow the Tripletac to dry completely.

Starting in one corner of the canvas, apply a small amount of water. Allow the water to saturate the paper, then rub to peel the paper away. The paper is made up of three layers: the top layer, white core and the layer we are transferring onto the canvas. When you get to the white layer, rub gently. Some areas may wear through, but that is why the background has been coloured. Gradually rub the paper off the entire canvas until the transfer image is visible. Allow to dry.

With a wet brush, apply an even layer of Tripletac over the entire canvas. Allow to dry. To achieve a more glossy finish, apply a second coat.

Embellish! The glitter triangles were created using X-Press It double-sided adhesive sheets and fine glitter. All metal embellishments and cut-outs are FabScraps products.

FEATURING TRIPLETAC

TOP TIPS The same method can be used to transfer photos on to canvas. Print your photos from a laser or inkjet printer, adhere face down and use the same rubbing method. You are not limited to using this technique on canvas. Try it on wood for a fun effect. A heat gun can be used to speed up the drying time, but make sure you constantly move the heat to avoid bubbling.

If the image looks foggy or white after rubbing off the paper, you can re-wet the surface and gently rub off more.

Tripletac can also be used as an adhesive and works well on paper, cardboard, textiles, timber and metal surfaces.

TOP TIPS

Add dimension by embossing and layering patterned papers. Use dimensional tape to make pre-made embellishments “pop” off the page.

If there are papers in the pad that you dislike, use them as a mat to prevent wastage.
