Scott Wilson is a global integrated design and engineering consultancy for the built and natural environments. Scott Wilson offers Strategic Consultancy and multi-disciplinary professional services in the Railways, Buildings & Infrastructure, Environment & Natural Resources and Roads Sectors.

Approach

Our approach is to determine an understanding of our clients’ needs and aspirations. We consider these in the context of our own practical knowledge of digital design and seek to exceed these targets in an imaginative, but appropriate manner. We bring added value to the project through a partnering approach and work closely with project designers and design teams from the outset of a commission.

A fundamental component of our service is to use best practice methodologies to ensure the accuracy and robustness of our solutions. This approach ensures that visualisations and models can be relied upon in circumstances where precision is imperative. In short, this means that our solutions are accurate representations of the real world, not simple pictures, and can be used, for example, in public enquiries.

A second differential of our service is the ability to deploy digital models, simulations and multimedia using a variety of techniques, as befitting the project in hand. This can range from high quality prints, to online sites and interactive systems - a particular speciality of the Scott Wilson team.

We understand the constraints that projects may be under, such as budget and timescale and our team are therefore experienced in managing large or small projects, working to demanding deadlines and challenging budgets.

Scott Wilson’s Digital Media Team specialise in designing creative, fresh, original and accurate 3D models, animations, multimedia, graphic, real time and interactive experiences. These technologies are used as an iterative part of the design process, to assist in communicating concepts and design proposals, engaging stakeholders or as part of a public consultation exercise.

Our creative and technical teams are experienced in conjunction with our own designers or in partnership with other consultants appointed by the client. In either case, the commission will benefit from a passionate team of professionals experienced in working alongside other disciplines in a collaborative, innovative and integrated manner. Our designers encompass a wide range of experience and skills covering the full scope of digital design techniques and deployment methods.

We work closely with a wide range of clients, including public bodies and private organisations. Our design skills are utilised on projects in all market sectors including healthcare, road, rail and urban regeneration.

As would be expected, this is an area in which technologies are constantly developing. We endeavour to stay at the leading edge of software developments and maintain ongoing collaboration with a number of key software developers, allowing us to be at the forefront of application development, for example with real time modelling. However, we do not see these technologies as an end in themselves, but rather as an integral tool to bring effective communications, value and innovation to our clients’ projects.

St NiniansFive miles beyond the historic town of Dunfermline, on the main route going north in Scotland, the M90 mounts the crest of a small hill and then descends into a wide green valley. Ahead to the left are the dark pines of Thornton Wood. They define the side of the hill, and natural bowl that frames a site of work, an open cast coal mine. This is the setting for a land-scape designed by Charles Jencks, Scot World – Scot Loch, four landforms that look over a lake five hundred meters long.

Millions of tons of earth have to be moved to get at the coal and here, for the first time in Scotland at this scale, it becomes the opportunity for land art and social facilities. For the community and those travelling north, it is a chance to explore Scotland as a miniature landscape.

Real Time

Traditional 3D modelling is based on a pre-defined viewpoint or route through a virtual model. Real Time solutions take 3D modelling to the next level of sophistication by allowing the user to navigate their own way through a model. Using technology developed from military and gaming applications, Real Time solutions enables users to ‘walk’ within a virtual scheme using the arrows on a keyboard, a mouse or a joystick.

Real Time models can be deployed on a website, within a PowerPoint presentation or on CD/DVD-ROM. Once the model has been built users do not require any special software to view and navigate within the model. Real Time solutions are particularly powerful in consultation exercises with all stakeholders involved in a project and these solutions have been used to great effect in formal public enquiries.

Real Time modelling can be applied to any type of project, from building interiors to large scale terrain environments. Another advance of this technology is the ability to communicate changes over time, switch instantly between different design options and even view different weather conditions.
