The Issue of Purity

Air Liquide does not use low quality raw materials of lower purity, primarily because increased

impurities are known to create application problems such as unidentified peaks on chro-

matographs. We insist on using only the highest purity components available, and stock

more than 800 high-purity components for use in making our gas and liquid standards.

Our Capabilities

The number of possible gas and liquid mixtures consisting of various components in vary-

ing concentrations is nearly infinite. Therefore, this section is only a guideline containing many

of the more commonly requested mixtures we produce. Additional mixtures not shown in

this catalog are available, as are custom developed products for very specialized applica-

tions. Nonetheless, despite being the world leader in specialty gases, we do encounter

certain limitations that preclude production of certain mixtures. Some are safety-related while

most are a matter of chemistry.

Unique SCOTT Technology

The 50-plus year heritage of Scott Specialty Gases, combined with Air Liquide’s century of

gas innovation, equals a rich history of developing proprietary technology to facilitate con-

sistent preparation of the highest accuracy mixtures available in the specialty gas industry.

Air Liquide maintains this commitment to continuous innovation in specialty gas technology

by utilizing diverse blending and analysis capabilities. These technical innovations enable us

to achieve unequalled product specifications, regardless of the nature of the components in

the mixture. Certain technologies and resulting product characteristics are exclusive to

SCOTT mixtures from Air Liquide.

SCOTT™ Mixtures continued

SCOTT mixtures have long been the definitive standard for calibration accuracy. Our

ISO/IEC 17025 certified laboratories follow strict procedures for preparation and analysis

of gas mixtures, thus ensuring traceable products of the highest quality. When appropriate,

our calibration mixtures are analyzed against benchmark standards such as Standard

Reference Materials (SRMs) obtained from the National Industrial Standards and Technol-

ogy (NIST) or other recognized suppliers such as VSL (formerly NMi) in The Netherlands.

Air Liquide maintains the world’s largest inventory of NIST-Traceable Reference Materials

(NTRMs), which we use in the production of mixtures.

How Gas Mixtures are Prepared, Analyzed and Certified

GRAVSTAT™

Gas mixtures are blended by a number of different methods. The most common method is

to gravimetrically weigh each component of the mixture using a scale routinely calibrated

against NIST weights, resulting in a mixture traceable to NIST. Our GRAVSTAT process yields

results often considered to have less uncertainty than analysis against other reference stan-

dards, which is particularly true for mixtures containing nonreactive components at percent

level concentrations.

Dual-Analyzed Standards

SCOTT RATA Class™ and Compliance Class™ environmental protocol gas mixtures are

dual-analyzed using EPA G1 or EPA G2 methods. Two independent analyses are performed

after the blending process has been completed in order to determine the concentration

for each component contained in the mixture and these analyses must agree to within

±1%. RATA Class mixtures are always directly traceable to metrology institute standards,

yielding the highest accuracy possible and enhancing RATA test performance.

SCOTT Mixtures

SCOTT™ Mixtures continued

Dual-Certified Standards

SCOTT Reference Class™ mixtures are dual-certified and are the most accurate mixtures for

your calibration needs. They receive two rigorous, independent methods of certification, one

during gravimetric blending using our GRAVSTAT™ process and the other using proprietary

laboratory analytical procedures. Each of these processes yields an accurate concentration

for each component. We then further ensure the accuracy of your mixture by employing our

exclusive interlocking feature: the concentrations determined from both certification

processes must agree (interlock) with each other within 1%. Both blending and laboratory

processes are traceable to recognized metrology organizations or internally developed

Air Liquide Reference Standards (ALRSs). These standards help you to improve the value

of your end product by facilitating precise instrument calibration accuracy, tighter process

control and credibility.

Single-Certified Standards

Single-certified standards provide the certified concentration from one independent

method—either the blending process or laboratory analysis. Specifications are achieved

by the accuracy and traceability of the blending process or the laboratory analysis.

Air Liquide offers three choices for single-certified standards:

n ACUBLEND™ Master Class™

n Certified Master Class™

n Certified Working Class™

Single-certified standards can be used for primary calibration of instrumentation. They are

also frequently used as validation standards after the instrument is calibrated with a dual-

certified standard such as a Reference Class product.

Custom Standards

A discussion of SCOTT gas and liquid mixture products would not be complete without

highlighting the availability of custom standards—custom mixtures engineered to your

specifications. The manufacturing of custom standards is a tradition, reflecting our ability

to blend mixtures specifically designed to successfully meet your applications. See page

14 for a listing of components available for blending.

Unique SCOTT™ TechnologyAir Liquide’s commitment to continuous innovation in specialty gas technology has resulted

in an impressive portfolio of mixing, blending and analysis capabilities. These technical

innovations, coupled with 100 years of experience in the business, allow us to achieve un-

equalled product specifications, regardless of the nature of the components in the mixture.

Certain technologies and product attributes are only available from Air Liquide.

Guaranteed Mixture Stability Begins with ACULIFE™

SCOTT ACULIFE is a suite of proprietary cylinder inerting treatments, utilized to enhance

the stability of reactive gas and liquid mixtures. These chemical vapor deposition processes

eliminate gas-to-cylinder surface interactions to provide guaranteed stability for ppm and

sub-ppm calibration standards, making possible a variety of unique and innovative products.

For example, Air Liquide is the leading supplier of hydrogen sulfide in air mixtures, with

guaranteed stability for safety and industrial hygiene applications. We also have unique

hydrogen chloride gas standards in the low ppm range, made possible by ACULIFE.

SCOTT ACUBLEND™ Produces Zero Blend Tolerance

ACUBLEND can produce a gas mixture having a unique feature called Zero Blend Tolerance.

Zero blend tolerance means no difference between certified and requested concentration.

The process is also capable of preparing a gas mixture precisely within a specified blend

tolerance. ACUBLEND enables Air Liquide to produce identical and homogeneous gas

mixtures in as many separate cylinders as desired. Identical gas mixtures in separate

cylinders have proven valuable by permitting the user to connect such cylinders to a com-

mon manifold, or allowing cylinders having identical concentrations to be used in separate

work areas.

ACUBLEND gas mixtures of identical concentration are ideally suited for 6-pack service.

Typically, customers using this service consume gas from four cylinders (through a common

manifold) that leaves the remaining two cylinders available for emergency and additional

supply until the 6-pack is replaced with another of identical concentration.

SCOTT MICROGRAV™ Enables PPT Concentrations

Air Liquide is the only specialty gas manufacturer to prepare and certify accurate and stable

gas mixtures containing compounds with concentrations approaching parts-per-trillion

(ppt) levels in returnable and nonreturnable cylinders. Our MICROGRAV process is a direct

blending technique that eliminates inaccuracies inherent in serial dilution methods.

Analytical quality control with proven gas chromatographic techniques verifies the accuracy

of MICROGRAV mixtures. ACULIFE inerting cylinder treatment provides one year guaran-

teed stability for mixtures in a nitrogen balance gas. Air Liquide is the primary supplier of

MICROGRAV gas mixtures to NIST and the EPA, as well as to state and other government

agencies. For available MICROGRAV mixtures, contact your Air Liquide representative.

delivery.

n Identical concentrations can be used

with multiple process streams at various

locations to ensure identical calibration.

n Zero Blend Tolerance results in receiving

exactly the concentration you ordered.

n Completely homogeneous mixtures

improve the accuracy and dependability

of ACUBLEND mixtures.

Unique SCOTT Technology

Unique SCOTT™ Technology continued

UNIPHASE™ Liquid Mixtures

Many applications require mixtures containing low vapor pressure and liquid components.

These may be components that are in the liquid phase at normal atmospheric temperatures

and pressures, or they may be components that are in the liquid state at the concentration

and pressure desired in the container. Liquid mixtures can be prepared two ways. In the

first, the blend is made in a conventional cylinder in which the components exist in the

cylinder under their own vapor pressures. In this type of mixture a dip tube, allowing with-

drawal from the bottom of the container, is usually provided. The withdrawal of the liquid

phase minimizes the concentration changes that will occur during emptying of the cylinder

due to fractionation of the more volatile components.

In the second method, the mixture is made completely in the liquid phase using a floating

piston cylinder to preserve mixture integrity. Such mixtures are called UNIPHASE. UNIPHASE

liquid mixtures are highly recommended when mixture components possess significantly

different vapor pressures and solubility characteristics. Air Liquide provides a Certificate

of Accuracy with detailed BTU calculations for all UNIPHASE mixtures. Phase envelopes

are available upon request. Air Liquide representatives will advise you when UNIPHASE

piston cylinders are necessary to ensure a single phase mixture.

SCOTT GRAVSTAT™ Gravimetric Blending

Mixtures that are prepared gravimetrically are produced by weighing the gas components

on a high-load, high-sensitivity analytical balance. Air Liquide uses NIST or VSL weights for

this procedure to assure mixtures are traceable to a reference standard that is certified by a

national or international metrology organization. Our gravimetric process, GRAVSTAT™, takes

into account all statistical parameters including scale weight uncertainty, scale calibration

and the raw material impurities of all pure components in multi-component mixtures. As a

result of GRAVSTAT, Air Liquide can assert the process accuracy by calculating gravimetric

uncertainty and properly representing the true value of component concentration.

Mixture Safety

Air Liquide carefully engineers every mixture to assure that the mixture can be made safely

and reliably. Gas mixtures containing both oxidizing and reducing agents, such as those

containing a fuel plus an oxidizer, can be safely prepared but only if the concentration of

the flammable component lies outside the flammable range. Since a flammable range

varies with temperature and pressure, it is difficult to state a specific rule concerning the

preparation of these mixtures. Air Liquide uses sophisticated engineering software to per-

form the necessary calculations. Generally, a mixture containing a flammable gas and an

oxidizer can be prepared at reduced pressures if the concentration of the flammable com-

ponent is less than 50% of the lower flammable limits.

SCOTT™ Interference-Free™ Multi-Component Protocol Gases

With the advent of acid rain legislation, Air Liquide pioneered the development of Interference-

Free multi-component protocol gases. This innovation set a new industry standard by

allowing utilities to switch to multi-component protocol gases in order to save time and money

in calibration auditing and cylinder handling. Interference-free technology also alleviated the

concern regarding mixtures of sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide and carbon dioxide where high

concentrations of CO2 can interfere with NO analysis on certain traditional analytical instru-

mentation. This interference-free technology is built into every RATA and Compliance

Class™ multi-component product.

RATA Class™ Protocol Gases: Most Accurate Protocol Available

SCOTT RATA Class protocol gases are recommended for all environmental applications

requiring the highest degree of compliance certainty, including:

n Primary calibration

n RATA tests

n Linearity tests

n CGAs and audits

RATA Class protocol mixtures are engineered to achieve ±1% accuracy, which makes RATA

Class protocol gases especially valuable for Relative Accuracy Test Audits. Many utilities

and other industrial facilities are pushing the performance of their continuous emissions

monitoring systems (CEMS) far below the ±10% RATA requirement of the EPA’s Acid

Rain Program to save the $30,000 – $70,000/year cost for RATA testing by achieving the

EPA ±7.5% accuracy limit. The RATA Class protocol is a critical element in achieving these

savings. This class also provides accurate measurements of SO2 and NOx emissions

thereby facilitating emissions trading credits where allowed.

RATA Class mixtures are dual-analyzed. For each reactive component, two separate analy-

ses are performed and analyzed directly against metrology institute standards to determine

the concentrations. Air Liquide’s proprietary analytical technology created the capability

for these two measurements to agree with each other within ±1%, even in two, three or

four-component mixtures. An easy-to-read Certificate of Accuracy is provided with each

RATA Class mixture as illustrated on page 90.

Compliance Class™ Protocol Gases: ±2% Accurate

SCOTT Compliance Class protocol gases meet EPA requirements for less demanding

environmental measurements. Compliance Class mixtures also feature dual-analysis and

NIST standard traceability. A Certificate of Accuracy is provided with each Compliance

Class mixture.

Calibration

Reference Class mixtures are appropriate

in applications such as hydrocarbon

processing, where high-accuracy calibra-

tion is of prime importance. This product

assures reproducibility of your particular

mixture over time. Every subsequent

Reference Class product you receive in

the future is guaranteed to calibrate within

±1% of your original mixture.

SCOTT Reference Class mixtures are engineered to provide ±1% accuracy. They are gravi-

metrically prepared using GRAVSTAT™, dual-certified, and they are available in a wide

range of components and concentrations. Reference Class mixtures are guaranteed to be

traceable to NIST, VSL or Air Liquide Reference Standards (ALRSs), which in many cases

are the only established reference materials in the world.

The Air Liquide Interlock Advantage

Reference Class mixtures receive two rigorous, independent methods of certification, one

during gravimetric blending using our GRAVSTAT process, and the other using proprietary

laboratory analytical procedures from Air Liquide. Each process yields an accurate concen-

tration for each component. These independent concentrations are then interlocked – they

must agree with each other to within ±1%.

Our exclusive interlocking feature allows for two independent determinations of the true

concentration of each component to be built into every mix. These independent measures

confirm one another, and therefore guarantee that our certification processes are unbiased.

Interlocking concentrations work to your advantage allowing you to perform extremely

precise instrument calibrations that will not drift over time. As a result, you can exert tighter

SPC control limits on processes.

Air Liquide provides a detailed Certificate of Accuracy with every Reference Class mixture as

shown on the next page. The analyzed concentration is reported for each minor component.

In mixtures with a concentration above 2%, the GRAVSTAT-determined concentration is

reported and the analyzed concentration is shown. In addition, the requested concentration

is shown and the Certificate of Accuracy also documents the traceability and shelf life.

Benefits and Features

n Dual-certification, independent blending and laboratory analytical values

guarantee the accuracy of your mixture.

n Air Liquide’s exclusive, interlocked concentration values permit precise calibrations

that will not drift over time, allowing tighter SPC.

n Air Liquide Reference Standards (ALRSs) provide traceability over the widest

range of components and concentrations available in the industry.

n Guaranteed ±1% accuracy minimizes uncertainty in critical primary calibration

applications.

n Produced using GRAVSTAT, a gravimetric gas metering methodology for proven

reliability.

n Assured availability from Air Liquide’s regional manufacturing facilities provides

just-in-time delivery to minimize the need for on-site inventory.

GAS AND LIQUID MIXTURES

Single-Certified Standards

ACUBLEND products have been a specialty gas industry standard for over 30 years. More

calibration gas mixtures have been manufactured by ACUBLEND than any other process.

Many customers have come to depend on the homogeneity, consistency and repeatability

of ACUBLEND mixtures for their ongoing, close tolerance calibration needs.

SCOTT ACUBLEND Master Class mixtures are produced using our patented ACUBLEND

and FLEXBLEND™ gas blending and analysis technologies. These unique processes allow

Air Liquide to blend, mix, compress and analyze gas mixtures in a single operation using

either gas or liquid phase minor components. Because the ACUBLEND and FLEXBLEND

processes are so tightly controlled, the cylinders produced from them are completely

homogeneous from top to bottom within the cylinder, from cylinder-to-cylinder, and even

from batch-to-batch. Each cylinder contains a mix that has a single-certified analytical

concentration, accuracy and traceability when the blending is finished.

Dynamic Blending Using Proprietary Reference Standards

ACUBLEND Master Class mixtures are dynamically blended using high resolution, real-time

analyzers. We use NIST or Air Liquide Reference Standards (ALRSs) for primary calibrations.

Air Liquide employs extensive, proprietary calibration algorithms to control our analyzers

and achieve an analytical accuracy of ±1% or ±2%, depending on the concentration range

you choose.

SCOTT ACUBLEND Master Class mixtures are backed by our state-of-the-art process con-

trols and include those mixtures where our knowledge of real-time sensors and calibration

techniques has demonstrated that an interference-free measurement can be made in real

time and within our analytical accuracy specifications. As with our other product classes,

raw materials are carefully selected and verified to purity specifications prior to use in the

ACUBLEND process.

Air Liquide provides a detailed Certificate of Accuracy with every ACUBLEND Master Class

mixture as shown on page 94. The analyzed concentration is reported for each minor

component. In addition, the requested concentration can be shown.

Benefits and Features

n Short production time results in fast delivery.

n Identical mixture concentrations can be used with multiple process streams at various

locations to ensure identical calibration.

n Zero Blend Tolerance results in receiving exactly the concentration you ordered.

n Completely homogeneous mixtures improve the accuracy and dependability.

n A virtually unlimited supply of identical mixtures—from cylinder-to-cylinder and

batch-to-batch—eliminates the need for recalibration due to variations in mixture

concentrations.

Recommended Applications

n Calibration for multiple users

n Auto emissions test cells

n Multi-facility calibrations

n Long-term or recurring calibrations

n Homogeneous consumable process

materials

n Applications requiring large volumes

of a given mixture

Zero Blend Tolerance

Upon request, ACUBLEND Master Class

mixtures can be manufactured with

a unique attribute we call Zero Blend

Tolerance. Zero Blend Tolerance simply

means “no deviation from ordered

concentration,” in that the concentration

we produce for you is the same as the

concentration you requested.

Zero Blend Tolerance is a very useful

feature for those applications where you

need a calibration standard at an exact,

specified concentration, or where a

new calibration standard that you order

must match up exactly with your existing

ACUBLEND Master Class mix currently in

use. Repeat orders can perfectly duplicate

prior orders and cylinders can be inter-

changed with no harm to your process.

GAS AND LIQUID MIXTURES

Single-Certified Standards

SCOTT Certified Class mixtures offer the largest selection and combination of components,

concentrations, balance gases and cylinder options. You may choose from any compo-

nents listed on pages 14 and 15, or contact Air Liquide to discuss your custom applica-

tions. Components can be blended into a variety of balance gases, such as the traditional

nitrogen, air or helium. The Certified Class mixtures even offer you the option of blending

components into difficult hydrocarbon gas and liquid phases such as methane, ethylene

or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

In Certified Class, both reactive and nonreactive components are available in almost any

concentration range, and with one, a few or a large number of components, limited only

by the physical properties and chemical reactivities of the components themselves.

Air Liquide has successfully produced mixtures with more than 100 components to meet

specialized customer needs.

Certified Master Class™ Mixtures

Certified Master Class mixtures are blended using high-accuracy gravimetric, volumetric or

our patented ACUBLEND™ and FLEXBLEND™ techniques, depending on the components,

concentrations and combinations you select. This class of mixtures is single-certified, that

is, the stated (certified) concentration is determined from either the blend process or from

instrumental analysis. For Certified Master Class mixtures, the accuracy of the certified

concentration is typically ±1% or ±2% depending on the concentration range you select.

While some suppliers offer gas mixtures they refer to as being “certified,” Air Liquide’s

Certified Master Class mixtures feature both guaranteed concentration and accuracy for

each component in your mix. As a result, you can be certain that your Certified Class mix-

ture meets Air Liquide specifications.

Certified Master Class products provide you flexibility in component selection. Raw materials

are carefully selected and analyzed to control impurities prior to use, even in cases where

rare, unusual or customer provided materials are used. Further, and prior to manufacture,

Air Liquide conducts extensive engineering for every Certified Class mixture to assure that

each mixture can be prepared safely and that no uncontrolled cross-contamination or

cross-interference will occur.

Air Liquide provides a detailed Certificate of Accuracy with every Certified Master Class

mixture. The certified concentration is reported for each minor component. In addition,

the requested concentration can be shown indicating the blend tolerance specification

ordered, a useful feature for reordering. Every Certified Master Class Certificate of Accuracy

also documents the process traceability and shelf life. A sample certificate is shown on

page 97.

Fuel Gas BTU Analysis

In-plant heating and power generation

processes represent one of the biggest

operating costs faced by refineries, petro-

chemical and chemical plants. Accurate

determination of the BTU content of fuel

gas is an important facet of controlling

energy costs. By using SCOTT Certified

Class mixtures, many oil and chemical

companies have reduced their energy

costs through accurate determination of

the BTU content of their fuel gas streams.

For custody transfer or sales applications,

we recommend using Reference Class

mixtures.

Fired Heater and Furnace

Optimization

SCOTT Certified Class mixtures may be

used to accurately analyze the levels of

oxygen, carbon monoxide and unburned

hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust

gases from fired heaters and cracking

furnaces. With out accurate analysis and

proper control of these components,

a plant’s energy costs would skyrocket.

Certified Class mixtures will help you

reduce your energy costs by providing

you with an accurate analysis so that

you can better control these critical unit

operations.

Certified Working Class™ Mixtures

SCOTT Certified Class mixtures are used in a wide variety of laboratory and online instru-

mentation applications such as primary calibration and validation under statistical process

control (SPC). Your specific requirement will drive the choice of class.

Air Liquide selects the appropriate high-accuracy gravimetric, volumetric or dynamic process

to blend your Certified Working Class mixture, depending on the components and con-

centrations you select. Working Class mixtures are single-certified, and the accuracy of the

certified concentration ranges between ±2% to ±5%, depending on the concentration range

you select.

Certified Working Class products also provide you with tremendous flexibility in component

selection and combination. Air Liquide practices the same careful raw material quality con-

trol and preblend engineering as used in Certified Master products to assure a reliable and

safe mix. An added benefit, depending on your specific needs, is that a Certified Working

Class product may actually be available at a lower concentration or for a more reactive

component than for the corresponding Certified Master Class, because of the wider tol-

erances allowed by the Certified Working Class specifications.

Air Liquide provides a detailed Certificate of Accuracy with every Certified Working Class

mixture. The certified concentration is reported for each minor component. In addition, the

requested concentration can be shown indicating the blend tolerance specification, a useful

feature for reordering. Every Certified Working Class Certificate of Accuracy also documents

the process traceability and shelf life.

Pushing the Technical Envelope

When your specialty gas application has challenging specifications, Certified Class Mixtures

from Air Liquide are an excellent choice. No other specialty gas manufacturer combines

leading-edge mixture specifications with such great flexibility in component selection,

concentration or combination. When no one else can do it, contact Air Liquide, receive

technical support and get your job done right.

Air Liquide, in conjunction with Spectra Sensors and COSA, developed a proprietary technology for the certification of moisture standards.

Green cylinders, as they are known in the industry, are available in the balance gases listed below, as well as helium and others. The values

are interlocked using independent measurements from the gravimetric addition and the analytical results, and must agree within ±5%.

Air Liquide is the world's foremost

authority and supplier of environmental

calibration gas mixtures.

With an extensive portfolio that includes

SCOTT™ RATA and Compliance Class™

products, we offer the industry's most

accurate calibration standards engineered

to help avoid noncompliance fines.

Experts in EPA Protocol Gases

You could be risking noncompliance and the expense of unnecessary RATA tests. Consider

these important facts you should know before you purchase another EPA protocol gas.

n Cost-efficient utilities typically save $30,000–$70,000/year or more in repeat

RATA testing by achieving Acid Rain Program relative accuracies below the EPA’s

7.5% specification.

n Direct traceability to SRMs, PRMs and NTRMs is essential for protocol accuracy.

n Traceability to GMIS standards can degrade accuracy to worse than ±2%.

n G2 analysis leads to uncertainty and questionable protocol accuracy.

n Some multi-component protocol mixtures may cost less – at the expense of accuracy.

n Mathematical corrections, when producing multi-component mixtures, do not provide

the same degree of certainty as FTIR technology.

Trust the Experts in EPA Protocol Gases

Air Liquide is the world’s foremost authority and supplier of environmental calibration gases.

In fact, we developed the original EPA protocol gases guidelines, were actively involved in

subsequent revisions, and currently participate in other important EPA gas calibration

guidance. We offer two classes of EPA protocol products that are instrumental in helping

industries avoid noncompliance fines and downtime caused by inaccurate instrument

calibration.

SCOTT™ RATA Class™ protocol gases are recommended for applications requiring

the highest degree of compliance certainty, including primary calibration, RATA tests,

and quarterly CGAs and audits. RATA Class protocol mixtures are dual-analyzed and

manufactured to achieve ±1% accuracy.

SCOTT Compliance Class™ protocol gases meet EPA requirements for less demanding

environmental measurements. Compliance Class mixtures also feature NIST standard

traceability. They are dual-analyzed and manufactured to achieve ±2%.

For detailed information about the features and benefits of SCOTT EPA protocol gases, see

pages 86 to 89 in the Mixtures section of this catalog.

Partners in Proficiency Testing with Louisiana DEQ

Air Liquide is the only specialty gas supplier authorized by the Louisiana State Department

of Environmental Quality to supply proficiency testing (PT) samples. Those applying for a

license to perform stack or engine emissions testing in Louisiana must first accurately an-

alyze a blind PT sample provided by Air Liquide. The applicant submits their analysis results

to Air Liquide for evaluation. Air Liquide reviews the analysis and determines a pass/fail

result. Once the applicant passes, Air Liquide will generate a Certificate of Analysis for the

original PT sample and issue it to the applicant, and submit the results of the PT evaluation

to the DEQ.

Beyond Accuracy

SCOTT RATA Class EPA Protocol Gases

deliver ±1% accuracy which is critical for

environmental regulatory compliance.

However, according to the EPA, you’re still

likely to fail an environmental audit for

three key reasons.

Air Liquide can protect you against

these three major pitfalls with

SHOP@airliquide™ online inventory

management system.

1. No Certificate of Accuracy on File

Air Liquide gives you dependable, 24/7

online access to a Certificate of Accuracy

for every protocol in your inventory – you’ll

never lose or misplace another certificate.

2. Expired protocol gas in use

Air Liquide sends you an email alerting

you when a cylinder in your inventory

reaches its expiration date – you

won’t run the risk of inadvertently

using a protocol gas that may no longer

be accurate.

3. Cylinder pressure below 150 psi

Air Liquide provides the option of sending

email alerts when the pressure of a

cylinder in use at your facility reaches low

levels – you can promptly change out the

cylinder before a violation occurs.

The following table lists EPA methods and the most commonly used gas mixtures required. Air Liquide produces these and many other

multi-component mixtures with either ±1% (RATA Class™) or ±2% (Compliance Class™) guaranteed accuracy. All EPA protocol gases

supplied by Air Liquide strictly comply with EPA specified methods. Please refer to pages 88 to 90 for detailed information about Air Liquide

protocol products and methods.

Low NOx Permitted Units

n Gas turbines

n Coal burning facilities

n Boilers/furnaces

SCOTT™ Low NOx EPA protocol gases from Air Liquide are unique in the environmental

industry. With guaranteed ±1% accuracy in concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm, they provide

the highest reliability and level of confidence for meeting environmental compliance require-

ments. They are invaluable for use by stack testers and utilities, and can be used for

Relative Accuracy Test Audits (RATAs). SCOTT Low NOx EPA Protocol Gases are dual-

analyzed using EPA G1 or G2 methods. Two independent analyses are performed after the

blending process has been completed in order to determine the concentration for each

component. As per EPA requirements, the values obtained from these analyses must agree

to within ±1%. Air Liquide also manufactures Interference-Free™ Low NOx EPA Protocols

with CO or CO2, creating the only dual-component low NOx protocol gas available today.

Benefits and Features

n NIST or VSL-traceable.

n ±1% guaranteed dual-analyzed accuracy.

n Detailed Certificate of Accuracy meets EPA requirements.

n Identification of reference standard.

n Certified for NO, NOx, or both.

n Interference-Free multi-component mixtures are also available

with either CO or CO2 certified.

SCOTT CEM DAILY STANDARDS

161

Air Liquide offers two grades of CEM DAILY STANDARDS. These standards are typically used in applications where the use of EPA protocol

gases is not required. Zero blend tolerance is available with our proprietary ACUBLEND™ technology so multiple cylinders are produced

at the same concentrations. This minimizes the need to recalibrate from cylinder to cylinder. The following table lists available mixtures for

both grades.

CEM 1% DAILY STANDARDS provide ±1% analytical accuracy to help reduce errors in calibration and linearity. Use these standards to

help maximize CEM system performance on a daily basis.

CEM 2% DAILY STANDARDS provide consistent ±2% analytical accuracy for those mixtures for which it is not possible to achieve ±1%

accuracy. This accuracy is comparable to the ±2% minimum accuracy requirement of an EPA protocol gas mixture. Use these standards

to maximize daily CEM performance in applications where ±1% analytical accuracy is either unavailable or unnecessary.

Mercury Verification ProductFossil-fueled power plants may be monitoring their mercury stack emissions in accordance

with EPA 40 CFR Parts 60 & 75. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s popular Model 80i Mercury

Analyzer uses small amounts of 900 ppm chlorine gas (in nitrogen balance gas) for a weekly

integrity test of their analyzer system. Drawing on the principle of gas phase titration, ele-

mental mercury vapor is combined with dilute chlorine gas from a small cylinder to form

mercuric chloride. The mercuric chloride is then injected into the probe filter and through

the entire system to calculate/confirm the conversion efficiency. This process takes place on

the stack at the point of injection. The chlorine gas is available in a disposable cylinder with

a matching regulator per the specifications to the right.

Landfill Gas Applications

Landfill gas (LFG) is composed primarilyof methane and carbon dioxide but alsocontains trace quantities of other Non-methane Organic Compounds (NMOCs).Although these NMOCs represent only a fraction of the total LFG, uncontrolledemissions may exceed the Title V majorsource thresholds for VOCs. Many havebeen designated as Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) under the Clean Air Act,and therefore may be the driving forcefor air regulatory compliance.

Chemical/Rubber Applications

Fugitive emissions from production ofstyrene-butadiene polymers may containlow level aromatics and hydrocarbonsthat have been identified as HAPs. Theaccurate determination of these con-taminants will be critical to the regulatorycompliance of the producer.
