In June 2009 I secured a job co-ordinating a music event for the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival in conjunction with NHS

Scotland, The Scottish Association for Mental Health and the Scottish Social Work Department. My job was to organise a cool music

event that promoted positive mental health to young people, this event was entitled Sound Minds (www.soundminds.org.uk). The

primary objectives for the project was to create a music event, which promoted positive mental health messages to young people aged

between 16 and 26 in Lanarkshire. To ensure we had an event that appealed to young people, I asked young people what they would

like from an event like this. I took on board all of their suggestions and organised the event based on their feedback.

To ensure I was able to keep on top of the workload, I employed various project management techniques such as producing work

plans, assembling teams and delegating various tasks. I compiled the work plans in close proximity with the clients, we agreed

deadlines, monthly targets and regular meetings to ensure work was being done and everyone was kept well informed. One key

component to the whole process was getting volunteers on board. I assembled a Volunteer steering group of 12 young people who

were actively invovled in the local music scene. This benefited the project because the event, which was primarily aimed at young

people, was now being organised by young people. It benefited me because it meant the workload was significantly reduced and it

benefited the young people, as they would gain a great deal of experience organising the event.

By assembling an effective work plan and ensuring that my time management techniques were implemented correctly, I was able to

keep on top of all deadlines. Another technique I always use when planning my time is planning only 70 % of my workload for any

given week, because you can never plan for any unscheduled interruptions or complications. I am also a very focused and driven

individual and I am willing to work overtime to get the job done. In my current employment with The Reeltime Music Charity I have

worked over 1000 voluntary hours, because I take as much satisfaction seeing a project I have delivered succeed, as I do in financial

    gain.

To ensure the quality of work delivered was of an exceptional standard, when I first liased with the organisations funding the project, I

ensured I had clear objectives. Throughout the project I would refer to these objectives to ensure we were working towards them. I

always try to achieve that little bit more than what is asked. Again I always kept the clients informed throughout which ensured any

queries and concerns were dealt with quickly and efficiently

The outcome was fantastic. The sound minds event attracted over 900 young people to Motherwell concert hall, and if you include our

publicity stunt, which entailed the team driving across Lanarkshire on a bus stopping and playing random gigs in the street, whilespeaking to young people about the event and mental health advice, we engaged with well over 1500 young people. Some of our

feedback has been fantastic from the young people who attended the event as well as the agencies who funded the project. The Sound

Minds project has also recently been given a 1500 donation from National Radio DJ and TV Presenter Des Clark, he was so impressed

by the event and the work ethic of the young people he agreed to donate this sum of money to go towards a Sound Minds event in

2010. He has also offered his services free of charge for future events.

Throughout my time at Reeltime music I have been invovled in such an array of community projects it would be impossible to include

them all in this portfolio, however one community project I was invovled in was a project called The Tutor Training program.

Some of the specific aims of the project was to train 10 young people (from the Brannock area) as youth music tutors and deliver a

series of music workshops for local young people (in partnership with local agencies) by February 2008, to engage and train 5

volunteers to assist and aid the youth music tutors to deliver workshops by and for Reeltime Music to work in partnership with at

least 2 local agencies by February 2008

In doing so the project hoped to Increase confidence and self esteem in local young people participating, Increase in new skills and

development of skills, Increase in active citizenship, Decrease in anti social behaviour, Increase in music and media opportunities in

area for young people, Promotion of a more positive image and future for young people in the area, Increase in local young people

working in the creative industries, Increase in partnership working in the area, Increase in youth provision in the area and Increase

in capacity for local agencies (including Reeltime Music) to deliver youth led projects

The project aimed to train 10 local young people in the basic skills needed to be youth music tutors, which involves elements of key

skills such as youth work, music tuition, group-work, music production and administration.

I then supported the youth music tutors to embark on a programme of service delivery in the Brannock area, complimenting existing

services who are working with hard to reach young people.

The young people chosen to be trained as tutors will demonstrate basic to moderate experience (as a minimum) of a musical

instrument(s), and 80% of the tutors should come from the Brannock area, so as not to exclude those outside of the area who show

potential. After desgning and delivering the training programme, it was my job to liase with local agencies and maintain and

administer the tutors, their resources and any evaluation and payroll paperwork (in conjunction with Administrator and Marketing &

    Evaluation Officer).

The project was a success and in 6 months 25 young people had been trained up and delivered 10 music workshops throughout the

Brannock area. In the process the youth music tutors had provided at least 2 hours of music tuition to 238 unique young people aged

between 9 and 17. The tutor trainees have continued to work and volunteer at Reeltime music which has enabled Reeltime to deliver

more work as before the programme there was only 3 trained tutors at Reeltime, this has now been increased to 28.
