ANGUS MUNRO (ANGUSMUNROMUSIC.COM)

Angus Munro is the well-dressed, sophisticated man in the room. You’ll no doubt find him at the piano, cultured pop filling the air with clear evidence of a fondness for The Divine Comedy, both in Angus’ preference for melody and his occasionally idiosyncratic lyrical content.

BIRDHEAD (FACEBOOK.COM/BIRDHEADMUSIC)

Like most rock pairings, Birdhead’s strength is as a live spectacle. For this is where you realise that the sight of rabid, paranoia-inducing, gizmo-heavy hypno-scuzz being generated by a bearded duo is every bit as essential as the kraut-inspired noises that throb from their amps.

THE JELLYMAN’S DAUGHTER (THEJELLYMANSDAUGHTER.COM)

A duo with a cello and acoustic guitar set-up mark The Jellyman’s Daughter as a peculiar proposition by default given that they have few, if any, notable peers. Some of The Jellyman’s Daughter’s songs come out wistful and melancholy thanks to the beautiful, complementary vocals of Edinburgh pair Emily Kelly and Graham Coe, while others deliver a zestful kick.

SHOWCASE ACTS

Page 17: SCOTLAND’S MUSIC CONVENTIONstatic.squarespace.com/static... · • £1.5 billion in ticket sales and counting • 180 million tickets sold • 60,000 concerts and festivals used

LAW(LAWHOLT.COM)

Lauren Holt’s emphatic image, with shaved head and bold, penetrating eyes, makes her impossible to ignore. The music of her stage alias LAW demands no less attention. Born in England but now living in Edinburgh, she favours darkly experimental, tripped out, soulful beats, and in recent EP opener Haters she possesses the consummate staying-out-till-daylight song.

MODEL AEROPLANES (MODEL-AEROPLANES.CO.UK)

Idols-in-waiting Model Aeroplanes recorded their rollicking debut single Crazy while they were finishing their Higher exams, but a career as musicians doesn’t look beyond the Dundonian teenagers, whose enthusiastic post-punk is reminiscent of Two Door Cinema Club or early Arctic Monkeys.

TUFF LOVE (LOSTMAP.COM/TUFF-LOVE)

Tuff Love are the first proper Lost Map signings not to have already joined in last year’s free transfer exodus from Fence Records. The two girls and one boy who make up this Glasgow trio are the soundtrack to awkward youth, with mumbled vocals overlapping their concoction of lo-fi indie, garage-rock and grunge.

Page 18: SCOTLAND’S MUSIC CONVENTIONstatic.squarespace.com/static... · • £1.5 billion in ticket sales and counting • 180 million tickets sold • 60,000 concerts and festivals used

SCHWEFELGELB (FACEBOOK.COM/SCHWEFELGELB)

Schwefelgelb is Techno from Berlin in form of a band: Sid as singer, Eddy as man behind machines. Besides the sound, a frequently changing visual staging is an essential element of their live shows, which they have performed all over Europe and in Japan. Their latest release is the vinyl EP “Dunkel vor den Augen uns” (July 2013, Gooiland Elektro) and the self-released single “Den Keller volllaufen” (December 2013).
