JUANSE´S CHEMIST:

-Old chemist founded in 1892.

-It´s important because of its originals tiles, made by de cordobés enrique de guijo. in its tiles we can see the publicity of that period, with direct images and texts to attract the atention of the customers and sell its drugs. The produced scenes show different pruducts for each social class: “diarretil” (a woman with a boy), “stamps” for toothache (look at the cothes, furniture, position of the bodies,,,)

-We can see that the advertised drugs were made by the chemist because the chemists of that time were like small laboratories where the chemist made his own medicines.

Pontejo´s square

-The Pontejo´s square is very near the Puerta del Sol.

-It is very famous in Madrid because of its etablishments related with the haberdasher´s shops and clothes shops. They said “if you are looking for something that you don´t find in Pontejos, it doesn´t exist”.

-In Galdós work, the Pontejo´s square is very important because it is the place where Jacinta lived, one main characters of his famous novel “ Fortunata y Jacinta” and the Santa Cruz family, who appeared in this novel too,had a shop here.

CAFÉS

-In the 19th century, cafés were the most important leisure-time-places, were people from Madrid spent their time. In the cafés, people used to talk about books or novels and even they made political conspiracys.

-Galdós spent a lot of free time in two famous cafés from Madrid: “El Café de las Columnas” and the one which is in La Puerta del Sol number 15.

-But the café which influenced the most in his work was: “La Fontana de Oro”, that gives name to one of his books. It was a place where young people, worried about the “people passions” talked and discussed. Most of them took part of the Spanish policy. This cfafé was very famous in that time. Now, it is an Irish pub.

Houses

-Houses 19th century had a wooden structure and weren´t higher than four floors.

-People who lived in those houses showed their social condition in a vertical way. The different floors showed class.

-The first floors were reserved for the rich families, they were bigger and the ceilings were higher. They were also more comfortable, and they had more rooms and a big courtyard. They were fresher in summer and warmer in winter.

-On the other hand, on the last floor the poor people lived (you can see this case in Fortunata´s house, from the novel “Fortunata y Jacinta”). These houses were lower and they had problems when it rained because of the leaks. They were much warmer in summer and colder in winter. They also bore the uncomfortable stairs. They were also much more dangerous because of the fires.
