of the Sconfi ne luminaire range

How did your cooperation with Zumtobel come about?

We have been working with Zumtobel on various projects for a long

time now. Zumtobel asked us to develop a new decorative luminaire

product line for shops, restaurants and hotels. This marked the be-

ginning of the Sconfi ne range, which is the starting point for a new

product portfolio called “decorative luminaires”. More products will be

added to this portfolio over the next few years.

What is the design concept behind Zumtobel’s Sconfi ne luminaire

range?

“Ditch the bodywork” was our mantra during the design phase. We

were inspired by the work of Dan Flavin – we picked up on the ap-

proach of dissolving spatial boundaries and concentrated on produc-

ing a lightweight product range that was stripped down to the bare

essentials. As an architect, I found it important that the individual ele-

ments were versatile and that modularity remained at the fore.

How did the luminaires change during the time between the initial con-

cept and implementation? Do you have a “favourite luminaire” and, if

so, why?

The preliminary, highly geometric designs hardly changed at all from

the time they were initially sketched out until they were fi nally realised.

Linea is a playful approach to fl uorescent lamps that can be installed

both vertically and horizontally, in the latter case, when many lumi-

naires are clustered together, this creates an image of a luminous cloud

which I particularly like. The geometrical cubes are extremely fl exible

– they can be deployed in a variety of ways as an individual element,

as a 9-cube module or as an entire wall. The lighting scenes thus pro-

duced leave their imprint on the environment, provide accent lighting

and convey emotions, whether in shop areas, restaurants or hotels. All

products in the Sconfi ne range are beautifully enhanced by being clus-

tered or grouped to create disparate lighting scenes.

Partially transparent with chrome coating: in addition to direct light,

sophisticated materials create refl ections in the luminaire unit that

lend the luminaire a fl oating appearance. An extremely wide variety

of light sources can be fi tted in the spherical luminaire unit depending

on the application area in question. An opal inner sphere ensures opti-

mum glare control and enhances the impression of plasticity and room

Pared down almost to the lighting effect it produces, Sconfi ne Linea

makes a hugely favourable impression with its delicate, insubstantial

look and highly elegant styling. The option of vertical or horizontal

installation, three design lengths, and pendant lengths of more than

four metres provide plenty of scope for creative design – particularly in

rooms with high ceilings. Special connectors make it possible to create

luminaire confi gurations whose apparently fl oating light lines seem to

visually extend the room and dissolve its spatial geometry.

Sconfi ne Cubo

Light and colour

Innovative LED technology really comes into its own in a translu-

cent, cube-shaped reflector made of PMMA with a diffuser-pearl

optic – both as an individual luminaire with a 1.2 W LED or as a lumi-

naire cluster. As a module comprising nine cubes and fi ve light col-

ours, Sconfi ne Cubo transforms entire spatial architectures. Constantly

changing colours are produced by randomly dimming the individual

cubes. Dynamic crescendos and fading of the overall lighting produce

a pleasant impression of room depth and conjure up an atmospheric

ambience in bars, restaurants and lounges.

individual cubes are randomly con-

trolled over a dimming range from

5 to 100 %. This produces dynamic

Sconfine underpins the emotional effect of a lighting solution.

Geometrical lighting units emphasise and shape the architecture.

Modules in the Sconfi ne range can be used fl exibly, thus making it

possible to optimally adapt lighting to various room situations. Smooth,

dynamic transitions between colours or various hues of white produce
