Doyoutravelalotbyairandstoreyourcameraequipmentintheoverheadbins?Considerpurchasing some type of hard-sided case toprotectyourequipment.Asoft-sidedcase,evenwithsubstantialpadding, may not protect your camera and lenses from other passen-gerstryingtocramtheiritemsintotheoverheads.If you enjoy photographing birds, you’re going to need a long lens, something at least in the 500-600mm range, if not longer. With the best lensescosting$6000andup,arethereanyalternatives?Ifyoucanlivewithamaximumapertureoff/6.3,anoptionistheSigma150-500mm(240-800mm35mmequivalent.)Thisisareasonablywell-builtandopti-callyprettygoodlensforjustalittleover$1000.Alessexpensivealter-nativeforphotographinginyouryardistosetupbirdfeedersinyouryard.“Camouflage”thefeederswithrealorartificialflowersorshrub-bery,andpurchaseaninexpensivehuntingblind(lessexpensivethanaphotographer’sblind).Oncethebirdsfindyourfeeders,youshouldbe able to set up about 15-20 feet from your feeder and get some really niceimageswitha100-400mmorevena70-300mmlens.

Anumberofyearsagowemetan86-year-oldladywhohadtraveledjustabouteverywhereonecouldthink.Iaskedhertheobviousquestion,whatisyourfavoriteplace?Sheanswered,“Everyplacehasitscharm.”Sothisisaboutoneofourfavoriteplaces--CostaRica.CostaRicaischarmingforitincrediblebirds,
animals,andflowersandforitsnumerousecosystems.AppropriateforEarth Day, 26% of the land has been set aside as protected area. It is trulyabeautifulcountrywithfriendlypeople,manyofwhomfortunatelyspeakbetterEnglishthanwedoSpanish.
WearefortunatetohavevisitedCostaRicasixtimes,allintheJanuarytoMarchmonths.Thisisagreattimeforphotographingbirdssinceyouwillfindnotonlythenativebirds,butalso,manymigratorybirdsfromNorthAmericaspendingtheirwintersthere.Ifyoulikephotographinghummingbirds,thisplaceisheaven.Therearemanybeau-tiful species, feeders in many locations, and the birds are so used to people that one can get really close. Many of these species don’t seem to be as territorial as our ruby throated hummingbirds.Theselittleguysareachallengetophotographbutwewereabletophotographthemwithouroncameraflash.
IfyoubeginyourtripinSanJoseandwouldlikeagreatintroductiontothecountry,youmightwanttovisitINBio,theNationalBiodiversityInstitute.OftenwhenwethinkofCostaRica,wethinkoflushrain-forests,tropicalforestsandbeautifulbeaches.Thereareactually12differentzoneswithdistinctivenaturalvegetationandecosystems,anamazingamountofdiversityforacountrysmallerthanWestVirginia.Inourwinter,ifyouareonthePacificside,itisthedryseason,onthe
Caribbean side, it is the rainy season. If youareinthelowerelevationsitisquitehot and humid, in the upperelevationsitcanbequitecool.Soitpays to do little home-workbeforeyouplanyourtrip.Taketravelbrochureswithagrain

Thereisadirect4-hourflightonDeltato San Jose from Atlanta.Thecountryis on the same time zoneasCentraltime,althoughCostaRicadoesnotobservedaylightsavingstimesinceitissoclosetotheequatorthatdawnandsunsetarealmostthesame time year round.

A total of 196 students representing 19 area schools entered a total of 748 photographs. Of those, 137 students submitted 570 digital photoswiththebalanceof178printphotosbeing submitted by 59 students.

BeforetravelingtoNepaltophotographthemagnificentpeaksoflegendarymountains,former PSC member Spears McAllester trainedforseveralmonthstoprepareforthechallengingtrekinsearchofthemostdramaticmountainsintheworld.TwodaysafterarrivinginKathmandu,thetrekbeganwitha‘thrilling’flightintotheLuklaairportfollowedby18daysofexploration.Tenofthosedaysonthetrailwereatelevationsof14,000feetupto18,195feet. Highlights of this experience included photographing Ama Dablam, described as “TheMostBeautifulMountainintheWorld”and“TheMatterhornonSteroids,”Mt.Everest,and an unexpected sunset scene from the villageofThame.

FIELD TRIPSMay 18 - Dalton-Whitfield Sesquicentennial in Dalton, GA
Meet Bob McLeod, trip leader, at 10:00 am at the Clisby Austin House in Tunnel Hill. Directions will be provided prior to the trip. This is a free event, and there will be exhibits at 5 significant sites, running simultaneously from 10 am - 4 pm. In addition to the 5 stops listed below, the W&A RR tunnel is also included. It was integral to the last hours of the "The Great
Locomotive Chase." The Yanks who were executed by the Rebs for their war efforts during the Chase are memorialized with a large monument at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The tunnel is adjacent to the Clisby Austin House. The house was once used by Gen.
