C. Manoharachary, K.V.B.R. Tilak, K.V. Mallaiah & I.K. Kunwar

Fungi and microbes have predominant influence in our lives. They are directly or indirectly involved in generating the food we eat and drink, besides providing life saving pharmaceutical products, including the sources of enzymes. They play a vital role in recycling of organic matter and several ecological processes. Both fungi and microbes have contributed several billion dollars worth of technological products. For instance: yeast is used in brewing and bakery, Lactobacillus ferments milk to yoghurt and a number of edible mushrooms are rich in nutrients besides possessing many medicinal properties. Bacteria and fungi serve as key organisms in understanding life processes, genetic engineering and as experimental organisms. Therefore, it is necessary to study the biology and biotechnology of these organisms. It is a humble attempt of the authors to make the readers understand the biology and biotechnology of fungi and microbes in a simpler way and also to communicate the recent developments.

An Introduction to Fungi (4th Ed.)

H.C. Dube

The book deals with fungi, deftly defined as “the organisms studied by mycologists”. There are many surprises: Fungi and Animalia together form a monophyletic group. But there is no common name for them, and are called as “sister groups”. The mycologists would discover emergence of a new world of 'modern mycology' gleaned from recent publications. The book starts with History of Mycology remembering Louis Pasteur's famous quote “History of science is science itself”. There are 31 chapters describing the form and function of fungi. Their symbiotic associations, chemical activities, secondary metabolites, mycotoxins, heterothallism, parasexuality and sex hormones are described under exclusive chapters. Each chapter is followed by a 'summary', and 'test questions'. The book will be indispensable for students of botany, microbiology, plant pathology and medical mycology.

The subject of medical mycology has gained greatly in interest and there has arisen a great realization of the importance of those fungi whose antibiotic products have become indispensable in the treatment of many maladies of Man and other animals. It has therefore, become apparent that an entirely new work is necessary, not merely as a text book for students but also to assist the many persons now undertaking research in the various fields of study in which the knowledge of fungi is fundamental to their work. In this work an attempt has been made to give the user the opportunity to learn the more important characters of almost all the generally recognized orders of fungi, and to have a foundation upon which the more intensive study of any of these groups may be based. So many of these organisms are still known but scantily, so that their true relationships are very doubtful. As examples, the Protomycetales and Eccrinales may be mentioned.

Plant Pathology has an important role to play in devising strategies suitable for sustainable agriculture. Some of the important steps to be taken by plant pathologists include the development of eco-friendly mechanisms of disease control through the use of biological resources, enhancing the resistant mechan-isms of the plant through molecular means as well as studies on the interactions of biotic and abiotic stressors. The diversity of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms is far more than what we have found out till date and the function of these important microbes in agro-ecosystems is also equally diverse. The ability of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, actinomycetes, plant growth promoting fungi, mycorrhiza, to influence plant growth depends upon the diverse mechanisms like phosphate solubilization, biological nitrogen fixation, phytohormone production, siderophore production, biological control of plant pathogens and direct or indirect induction of disease resistance. Application of these beneficial microorganisms in enriching soil and enhancing crop production will not only change the scenario of using harmful chemical fertilizers but will also open up new dimensions for utilizing microbial resources for sustainable agricultural practices. The present review covers a wide spectrum of articles which are pertinent in the present day context and gives an indication to readers of the role of plant pathology in the current agricultural scenario.

Introduction toAgriculturalMicrobiologyR.P. Pareek & N. Pareek

This text book is written keeping in mind the conte-nts of the syllabus of the course ‘Agricultural Micro-biology’ taught in BSc.(Ag) degree program all over the country as the syllabus is approved in Deans’ commi-ttee at ICAR level. The book will be useful for students and the teachers teaching the course. The book has five sections namely basics of microbiology which deals with fundamental principles of general microbiology. Section two covers ecology of soil biota and organisms in soil liter interfaces. Third section is biogeochemical cycles of plant nutrients discussing microbiological transformation of important plant nutrients and their movement in the soil constituents. Fourth section relates with applied aspect of agriculturally useful microorganisms dealing with biofertilizers and bioco-ntrol agents. Fifth section discusses qualities of drin-kable water and food and water borne diseases directly concerned with human hygiene. The language of the book is simple and subject matter is discussed with help of illustration such as graphs, charts, tables and pictures, keeping readers in mind. In the end of each chapter exercise in the form of questions has been incorporated to help the student to recapitulate the contents of the chapter.
