Science: Under The SeaFor Kindergarten

What I Hope My Students Learn:

To become more knowledgeable with life under the sea To be able to recognize creatures that live in the ocean To be able to relate certain human characteristics to creatures under the sea Understand the concepts of how mammals survive under water Some of the plants under the sea That there are a variety of shells in the ocean

Essential Questions and Unit Questions:

1.Describe at least 5 ocean creatures and what they have in common with one another.2.How do the plants under water help the life under the sea?3.How can you, as a human, relate to sea creatures?

112.11. Science, Kindergarten, Beginning with School Year 2010-2011.(a) Introduction

(4) In Kindergarten, students observe and describe the natural world using their five senses. Students do science as inquiry in order to develop and enrich their abilities to understand scientific concepts

and processes. Students develop vocabulary through their experiences investigating properties of common objects, earth materials, and organisms.

(b) Knowledge and Skills (2) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student develops abilities to ask questions and seek answers in classroom and outdoor investigations. The student is expected to:

(A) ask questions about organisms, objects, and events observed in the natural world(9) Organisms and environments. The student knows that plants and animals have basic needs and depend on the living and nonliving things around them for survival. The student is expected to:

(A) differentiate between living and nonliving things based upon whether they have basic needs and produce offspring; and

(B) examine evidence that living organisms have basic needs such as food, water, and shelter for animals and air, water, nutrients, sunlight,

and space for plants.

Strategies for Classroom Instruction

•Create labs for the students that incorporates there knowledge and skills •Read to the class books that relate to concepts taught during the lesson•Have the students analyze and ask questions during and after the activities have been completed•Have the students get involved and incorporate the lesson into physical activity, for example the “Crabwalk”•Implement all 5 senses into the class activities for the lesson•Discuss as a group, after the lesson, what individual students have learned
