Warm Up..

• Place your backpacks along the back wall• Grab your notebook, pencil, agenda• Complete Thursday’s warm up now! DO NOT WORK AHEAD! • REMEMBER YOU ARE QUIET IN YOUR SEAT WORKING WHEN THE

FINAL BELL RINGS

Visible Light Guided Notes Worksheet!• You will now receive this handout• Follow along and fill in the missing words to complete our lesson

today!

Write in notebook

•Something can be “seen” when light waves are reflected into our eyes.

Write in notebook

•Visible light travels in transverse waves.• Human eyes only respond to visible light.• Color red has longest wavelength• Color violet has shortest wavelength

Reflected Light• Light can be absorbed or reflected. • Absorbed light = the colors we do not see • Reflected light = the colors we see

Write these notes!

Reflected Light - NotesWhite light = contains all the colors (ROY G BIV)• White objects reflect all the colors (ROYGBIV) • This is why light colored clothes in the summer feel cooler (reflecting

light)

• Black light reflects no color, it absorbs all the colors of light • This is why dark clothing feels hotter (absorbing light)

Write these notes!

Now let’s see if we understand….• I have picked five items in the classroom and for each item I

have listed what colors are being reflected and what color (s) are being absorbed.

Ms. Maas’ Five!

1. Black Lab Table Tops = it is absorbing all colors (ROYGBIV) and reflecting black (we see)2. Yellow Textbooks = reflecting yellow (we see) and absorbing ROGBIV3. Blue Chairs = reflecting blue (we see) and absorbing ROYGIV4. Green Plant = reflecting green (we see) and absorbing ROYBIV5. American Flag Red Stripes = reflecting red (we see) and absorbing OYGBIV

Demonstration…

• Look at this pencil• Now look at this pencil in a glass – • Draw this in your notebook now• Write this question and answer in notebook:• What is the medium the light is traveling through?• Air

Demonstration…

• Now look at this pencil in a glass with water – • Draw this in your notebook now• Write this question and answer in your notebook:• What are the mediums the light is traveling through (hint there are 2

mediums)?• Air and water• Write this question and answer in your notebook:• Why does the pencil appear bent or broken?• Write your definition for refracted light again…..

Refracted Light: process where light slows down and bends as it travels from one medium to another; known as “bent light”

How is light behaving in the images below?

Without moving your head,

look up, Look down, Look all around,

How can you do this with your eye?

Parts of the Human Eye!

• You have 6 muscles attached to your eyeball which allows you to move your eye so you can look in different directions without moving your head.

The Human Eye

• Discovery Ed video “The Human Eye” (2:17 minutes)

Your EYE!

• If you reach up and feel around your eye, you’ll feel the bone of your skull. • There’s fat surrounding your eyeball to keep it from bumping up

against the bone and getting bruised.• In the cow’s eye dissection, we cut away all the fat and muscle so that

we can see the eyeball.

Cow Eye Video Dissection

• Humans = 6 muscles controlling our eyeball (can look in different directions without moving our heads) • Cows = 4 muscles controlling their eyeball

(they can’t roll their eyes like you can)

• So cows have to turn their heads to look around!

• If the video makes you uncomfortable, please simply put your head down on your desk. • While we are watching, please act as scientists. • This means, do not scream and shout, simply put your head down if

something makes you uncomfortable. • http://www.exploratorium.edu/learning_studio/cow_eye/step01.htm
