Statement Yes No Why

Sound waves travel faster through air than a brick wall.

It takes only 1/100th of a second for us to hear sound.

Ear drums vibrate like musical drums.

Slow sound waves make low sounds.

Humans can make a wide variety of sounds.

Sound is a type of energy made by vibrations. When any object vibrates, it causes movement in

molecules of air. These molecules are tiny, so tiny we can’t see them, but they create all of the

sound we hear. These molecules of air bump into other air molecules close to them, which makes

them vibrate too. As the molecules vibrate into each other it causes them to continue bumping into

more air molecules. This movement, called sound waves, keeps going until they run out of energy.

If your ear is within range of the vibrations, you hear the sound.

Picture a stone thrown into a still body of water. The rings of waves expand indefinitely. The same

is true with sound. Irregular repeating sound waves create noise, while regular repeating waves

produce musical notes.
