Dear Parents, I spoke with our students this week about following their dreams. I asked them to take into consideraon the skills they need, and acons they need to take to make their dreams a reality. Not all dreams need to be life- changing or huge. Not all dreams can be achieved at once; they may need to be broken down into smaller more manageable pieces. Are you following your dreams? If not, how close are you to commencing that journey? Observing others who are following their dreams is oſten the flame that ignites within us our intenon to do the same. People can inspire others just by doing what they love and doing it well. Let’s face it, no one is going to follow your dreams for you. Something to be mindful of whilst preparing or aconing our dreams is to be grateful for and to enjoy what we are doing today. Not everyone is in a posion to start the journey to their dreams, or they are sll discovering their pas- sion. Hopefully they are content with their life and in the process are learning new skills and discovering new talents. Dear Parents,

I spoke with our students this week about following their dreams. I asked them to take into consideration the skills they need, and actions they need to take to make their dreams a reality. Not all dreams need to be life-changing or huge. Not all dreams can be achieved at once; they may need to be broken down into smaller more manageable pieces. Are you following your dreams? If not, how close are you to commencing that journey?

Observing others who are following their dreams is often the flame that ignites within us our intention to do the same. People can inspire others just by doing what they love and doing it well. Let’s face it, no one is going to follow your dreams for you. Something to be mindful of whilst preparing or actioning our dreams is to be grateful for and to enjoy what we are doing today.

Not everyone is in a position to start the journey to their dreams, or they are still discovering their pas-sion. Hopefully they are content with their life and in the process are learning new skills and discovering new talents.

Whatever your dream, whatever your passion, what-ever your reality, the key to success at any age at any stage in life is ‘never stop learning’.

Australian Air Force Cadets from 804 Squadron in Alice Springs recently conducted a successful two day field training exercise in the Ross River area.

The exercise involved twenty Cadets and four Instructors deploying into a remote location over the weekend of 23 May and completing practical training in areas such as leadership, field craft, camouflage and concealment, first aid and rescue skills.

“This field exercise was the biggest conducted by 804 Squadron in over five years, and was a chance for junior Cadets to practise their field craft in a remote setting”, said Commanding Officer Brent Warren. “More experienced Cadets took on leader-ship roles, ensuring that the camp ran well”.

“Training included use of maps and compasses, communication via portable radio, and working in small teams”, said Executive Officer Phil Emmett. “This was a good opportunity for our developing leaders to hone their skills before heading off to Junior NCO promotion courses in the mid-year school holidays”.

Australian Air Force Cadets is a youth oriented organisation aimed at fostering quali-ties that will enable cadets to become responsible young adults, who will make a valuable contribution to the community - no matter what career you choose. The best bit for families is that, with direct support from the RAAF, most activities are free of charge.

“Cadets take part in a range of activities, including field craft, camping, adventure training, drill and ceremonial training, firearms training and navigation, to name a few” said Commanding Officer Warren. “Cadets normally participate in a parade every Monday night from 6 to 9pm, with camps and training opportunities occurring during weekends and public holidays”.

804 Squadron will commence its next recruitment in July 2015.

If you know someone aged between 13 and 18 years of age who has an interest in developing themselves as a leader and trying challenging and amazing activities, then Australian Air Force Cadets may be for you! Check out the web page at http://www.804sqn.aafc.org.au/, the Facebook page at 804 Squadron – Australian Air Force Cadets, or contact the Commanding Officer at [email protected].

Girls’ Boarding NewsThe Long Weekend

It was a great weekend with a good balance of relaxation and action. On Friday, everyone had time to chill out and relax. Saturday was also more laid back than normal with no netball games because of Finke. In the evening though, we all went to the circus. It was a great evening’s entertainment with some superb and unusual acts. For most people the motorbikes stole the show with a number of girls staying behind to get photos with the bikes and riders. On Sunday afternoon, we had our own version of Amaz-ing Race played both on and off campus. It was definitely a game of strategy with teams having to decide whether to go for fewer far away activities or more closer to home. Everything had to be photographed to provide evidence the tasks had been completed. The winning team was Mikeely, Savannah, Chelsea and Wade. Well done to them. Many thanks to Nathan who organised the whole activity and who is planning to make it an annual event complete with trophy. On Monday, it was BBQ time. The boarders walked up to the Telegraph Station in the morning and back after lunch. It was a long time since we’d been up there and a pleasant time was had by all. Thanks to Rhiannan and Jo who took them. Finally to round off the weekend we held our end of term party in the evening, with plenty of food, drink and laughter, before we said goodbye to the Year 9 campers on Tuesday morning. All in all it was a fun weekend.

Café AttendantSt Philip’s students in Year 9 have the opportunity to enroll in a VET program called “Café Attendant” in Semester 2 at CDU. This course runs for seven consecutive Friday’s from 8.30am to 11.45am, starting on 31 July and finishing on 11 Sept. Students would attend CDU during the morning and must attend St Philip’s College for periods 4 and 5 each Friday. This exposure to café skills will give students the opportunity to make an informed decision about furthering their study in Hospitality or Cooking in 2016.

Parents are advised to email Kate Anderson [email protected] if they have any questions or would like to enrol their child. Any student willing to take up this opportunity must submit an Expression of Interest form to Kate Anderson by Wednesday 17 June. Successful applicants will be notified in Week 1 of Term 3.

IMPoRTANT INFo: Changes to parking due to new landscaping near Reception, Rivergum

Cafe and The Minnamurra HallDear Parents,

It’s an exciting time around the College this week as there will be new landscaping starting near Reception, the Rivergum Café and The Minnamurra Hall from Thursday 4 June.

Please see images below:

However, due to this improvement there will be permanent changes to parking near Reception, AND there will be temporary changes to access Reception during construction.

1. All the current visitor, reserved and disabled bays near Reception and The Minnamurra Hall will move to the bays immediately opposite on the river side. (See below).

2. We strongly urge all parents to use the car park behind the Bruce Reid Sports Centre or any available parking bays INSIDE the roundabout near the entrance to the College.

However, if you need to park near The Minnamurra Hall to visit Reception or Student Access there will be temporary changes to access Reception during construction. (Please see diagram on page 5).

We apologise for any inconvenience during construction however the final result will be truly beautiful.

Shade sails will also be erected in front of the Rivergum Café and this has been funded by the Cancer Council’s Shade for Secondary Schools Program supported by eftpos. Design based on the Fibonnaci Curve by Spectrim’s Hamish McGauchie.

What’s happening in Week 9?

Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah’s Ark.

Don’t miss the boat.

Remember that we are all in the same boat.

Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.

Stay fit. When you’re 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

Build your future on high ground.

For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.

Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

When you’re stressed, float awhile.

Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

No matter the storm, when you are with God, there’s always a rainbow waiting.
