Most non-skid tape is solvent resistant, very sticky, and once attached for an extended period of time becomes very difficult to remove. • A school bus barn in Indiana regularly replaces worn out non-skid tape. They use a scraper blade and a lot of elbow grease to remove each strip. It took 1-1/2 hours to scrape away all the non-skid strips in each bus. • Using a Cryotool convex scraper blade on Partsmaster’s Oscillating Tool, they were able to remove all the strips in only 20 minutes. Using this method saves them time, money and the potential safety hazard created when using manual scraper blades. APPLICATION STEPS Mount scraper blade onto oscillating tool Inspect to see that the blade edge is sharp and bur-free Rest the blade onto the base surface Position the blade edge at the edge of the tape and elevate the blade to a 5 – 10° angle Work the oscillating blade under the tape. Original Repair Procedure and Result: School bus maintenance workers used hand scrapers to remove worn/thin non-skid tape strips applied to the entrance steps. This method works well enough, but it takes a great deal of strength and endurance and can take 1-1/2 hours to remove the tape. This bus barn is responsible for servicing 100 busses. Tape is replaced as needed but usually occurs once every two years.
