• ‘Hunting and gathering’ teamchallenges which encourage pupilsto consider how different life was inMesolithic Suffolk

Journeys in Ancient egypt for Ks2Ancient civilisations: Life and Deathin Ancient egypt

During this full-day visit, pupils willmap the journey of an AncientEgyptian object from the potter thatmade it to the Museum visitors thathandle it today. Activities include:

• Handling real Ancient Egyptianobjects to discover the stories theyhave to tell

• Creating a living timeline and makinga clay Shabti for the Pharaoh

• Stepping into the mummy's tomband discovering the importance ofthe afterlife

• Exploring the Natural History galleryand discover the animals thatinspired the gods of Ancient Egypt

During this half-day visit, pupilsuncover the history of their town bytaking on the roles of a local wartimefamily. Combining fun, hands-onactivities with the use of real artefacts,pupils will discuss their ideas and useevidence to strengthen or weakenarguments. Activities include:

• Building a model air raid shelter• Sending coded messages on the

working Morse Code machine• Using real and replica Second World

War objects to role-play, includingtelephones, gas masks, ration booksand clothing

During this half-day visit, pupilsinvestigate traditional displays andhandling collections to employ andpractise scientific enquiry skills -including observation, prediction andmeasurement. Activities include:

• Identifying the five basic classes ofanimal, using the fantastic VictorianNatural History Gallery

• Learning new scientific vocabularyand understanding how to apply it

• Handling skulls to predict the size ofwhole animals

• Practising teamwork,communication and problem solvingskills in interactive activities

During this half-day visit, paintings arebrought to life using costume,role-play and props to learn about thelife of the great artist, John Constable.The session supports learning inhistory, art and English, developingnew techniques, understanding andskills. Activities include:

• Creating miniature 3D landscapesand using tablets to capturedifferent viewpoints

• Handling geology and social historyobjects from the Ipswich collection

LocAL history stuDies for Ks1AnD Ks2extending pupils’ chronologicalknowledge beyond 1066 thesesessions focus on what life was likefor people living and working inipswich in the past. choose from thefollowing:

tudors: the Withypoll family atchristchurch mansionDuring this full-day visit, pupils aretransported back to Tudor times toquestion how real objects andevidence can be used to tell thehistory of where they live. Activitiesinclude:

• Weaving wattle panels to learnabout Tudor buildings and how theymight compare to those fromancient civilisations or present day

• Plotting an explorer's voyage aroundthe world on a Tudor map anddiscovering the goods the explorersbrought back from other countries

• Examining mysterious Tudor objectsto find clues about what they were,how they work and who might haveused them

This school session is part of Aspire, a partnership programme touring ‘SalisburyCathedral from the meadows’ 1831 to five UK institutions. Aspire is supported bythe Heritage Lottery Fund and the Art Fund

Victorians - the fonnereau family atchristchurch mansionA full or half-day session brings thisVictorian home to life with pupilsplaying the role of servants tocomplete kitchen and laundry choresthat need to be done. Activitiesinclude:

• Dressing up, making real butter androle-playing the Victorian washingweek

• Using real and replica objects toinvestigate how rich and poorpeople in Victorian Ipswich lived,through the stories of the peoplewho made the Mansion their home

• Taking part in deportment activities,silhouette drawing, and much more

toys for Ks1During this half-day session childrenexplore how toys have changed overthe last 150 years in hands-onactivities that reveal more about theamazing toy collection at ChristchurchMansion. Activities include:

• Playing with a variety of old toys andfinding out how they work

• Seeing how pictures come to life in aVictorian Zoetrope

• Hearing a very special Victorianmusical book and working out howthe animal sounds are made
