Galena Bear Sports ReviewGalena Loses to Blue Eye

50-33 (Spokane Invite)On Tuesday, January 20th,

the Bears played the Bulldogs from Blue Eye in the first round of the Spokane Invitational. The Bears lost 50-33.

The Bulldogs and Bears played a hard fought contest the entire night. The Bears were aided by slowing the game down and working the ball to get the best shot. All thought the Bears were able to keep the game at a slow, con-trolled pace, they struggled with the full court pressure from the Bulldogs.

The Bears were led in scor-ing by Cameron Caulfield with seven points. Also scor-ing for the Bears was: Andrew Batson and Coby Sartin with five, Ryan Cool and DeMarcus Walters with four, Kelby Ste-phens and Caleb Seaman with three, and Caleb Hall with two.

Galena Loses to Spokane 57-54 (Spokane Invite)

On Friday, January 23rd, the Bears played Spokane in the second round of the Spokane Invitational Tournament. The Owls won 57-54 in a game that went down to the wire.

The Bears came out hot and jumped to a 9-2 lead. That would be the biggest lead of the game for either team.

The Bears handled the pres-sure from Spokane very well. Every time Spokane scored or forced a turnover, the Bears an-swered with a basket or a stop of their own. The game was back and forth the entire way.

With just a few seconds left, the Owls were up 3. The Bears had a chance, but the ball rolled out as the buzzer sounded to end the game. The Bears were led in scor-ing by Cameron Caulfield with 15 points. Also scoring was: Caleb Seaman with nine, Ryan Cool with eight, Kelby Stephens with seven, Andrew Batson and DeMarcus Walter with six, Coby Sartin with two, and Caleb Hall with one.

Galena Loses to Cassville 53-37 (Spokane Invite)

On Saturday, January 24th, the Bears traveled to play Cassville in the Spokane In-vitational. The Wildcats de-feated the Bears 53-37.

The Bears came out sluggish from a hard contest the previ-ous night. The Bears fought hard, but could not get a bas-ket when they needed to. The Bears also had a tough time with the pressure from the Wildcats.

The Bears were led in scoring by Caleb Hall with 22 points. Also scoring was: Ryan Cool with five, Cameron Caulfield and Caleb Seaman with three, Kyle Foster and Kelby Ste-phens with two points.

Echo From Mockingbird HillBarbara Parsons

707 Murry Ave., Crane Mo., 65633 • 417-723-5708

January 23, 2015, a cold morning on Mockingbird Hill. This really feels like winter weather. It is suppose to warm up and I hope it does.

Isaiah 59:8-9; The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace. Therefore is judgment far from us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness. (KJV)

I listen to the Harrison, Arkansas radio station sometimes, and they stated there was a fire along the Buffalo River. It was at 20 acres and now is up to 200 acres. It is really pretty at the Buffalo River, near Jasper, Arkansas. I hope they put it out soon. I talked to Orvilene Reel, and they were okay. Rusty has another appointment with his doctor as I do next week. Special belated birthday to Nellie Brecht January 3. I never can remember everyone’s birthday. Birthday greetings to Bill Crabb January 17, Barbara Chitwood January 20, and Vince Williams on January 27.

Get well wishes to all the sick. My brother is better and we hope he doesn’t take pneumonia again.

If you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep. Talk to the Shepherd.

Greetings from the Southern Ozarks of Taney County.I thank God I am better from the respiratory infection I have

been battling. What a blessing to have warmer temperatures. The cold is hard on old people.

Branson seems to be doing well this winter. There is a lot of traffic. My Grandson, John Fullerton and his group have been having two or three shows a week at the IMAX Theater. There were several shows being held according to the show reviews that are printed in our Branson paper. They are the Baldknobbers Show, Hughes Brothers, Grand Country Jubilee, Amazing Pets, and Peterson Family Bluegrass. Most of these have shows on Friday, Saturday, and Monday.

An article came out in our local Branson paper the old Reeds Spring Community Church built by the Presbyterians in the early teens, had been bought from the city. The three gentleman that had showed interest in it before are the ones who bought it. They plan to restore it. I am glad for this to happen.

I hope my hometown can be a craft village. Tourists are still looking for local made items. People can create their own jobs.

When I go through there going to the Yocum Cemetery, there is no place to buy a good hamburger and something to drink. Maybe a double dip ice cream cone. The pizza is good, but I like other things.

Summer of 1950My Sister, Edna and Bob Mabe got married on June 30th. I

knew she was too young, but she had many talents.Edna was two years behind in school. She would have been

a junior when school started in the fall. Mom and Dad had to go with them to get their marriage license. They had to sign papers they were giving their consent. Bob was almost twenty. I had not got to be with them much. When I was home they were out on a date.

Merle and I talked a lot at night in the room we shared at Old Matt’s Cabin. We had to talk soft, as our voices would carry through the ceiling. The room was like a loft up over the dinning room and kitchen.

Merle asked me one night if I love Wallace Fullerton. It was hard for me to express my feelings. I did love him. I had fallen in love with him two years ago. I never told anyone before. I prayed every night if it be God’s will for my life some day Wallace would ask me to marry him. I thought if I really showed how I felt he would want sex before marriage. I sure did not want that.

Being molested as a child made me afraid to express my feelings. Wallace would hold me in his arms and tell me he loved me. I said I love you too.

Finally in July, Wallace said he wanted us to be together forever. I said I wanted it too. We started talking about when we might get married. I wanted to work through Labor Day. We could get married in September.

Merle was the first one I told about being engaged. The next morning I told Trimble’s.

It was my weekend to go home. I was happy to tell Mom and Dad. They said we don’t know him very well, but we want you to be happy. Wallace told me he wanted to get engaged sooner, but he did not want to get in my way while I was ready to graduate from school.

The days passed by very fast. There were a lot of tourists stopping by. Trimble’s had built a pie shop. They served Blueberry pie.

Mary had an older Sister who came and worked. Her husband was disabled, and he sat in the car every day. It was parked under the big leafy oak tree by the gift shop barn.

The third Saturday evening in July, Wallace said we had to talk. He said he wanted to make plans for us to go ahead and get married. The Korean War had broken out in June. Wallace said he was sure he would be called to go. He was in the latter part of World War II. When he got discharged he was put in the Army reserves for five years. He wanted us to have some time together before he would be called back to the Army.

Wallace had a calendar on his truck dash. We looked at it. I said I would work one more week. It would give Trimble’s time to find someone to take my place. The first week of August I could get a wedding together. The sixth of August was on Sunday. We could get married that evening at my home in Reeds Spring.

241 Yocum Pond Road, Galena, Missouri 65656Hello everyone. We had a real

nice last weekend, and still have the high in the forty’s. Had a nice rain Monday. I was glad we got some rain. They were talking of not getting any rain, and things could get dangerous with a fire. The rain kept Roger from doing some yard work, but it can wait for another day. Just wished I was able to work in the yard. Got the results on my blood test I had a week ago Tuesday. My sodium was low, and my thyroid was high, so the doctor changed the medicine on the thyroid. I am supposed to take another blood test on February 17th.

Here are some things that were 40 years ago. This is how times have changed. In 1974, if you wanted to go to a movie you would pay $1.87 for the ticket. If you needed to buy a gallon of milk you would pay $1.57. To fill up your car, the average gas cost was $.53 gallon. To mail a letter, you paid $.10 for a stamp. I can remember when we paid only $.03. Probably was in the early

thirties. In 1974, technology was just starting to revolutionize the health care industry. That was the year the first MRI scanner was developed, along with the first vaccine for chicken pox. When Oxford opened in 1974, they didn’t have the luxury of using computers, smart phones, or tablets. They had to do everything with their hands. Now let’s jump to 2014. We know how prices, fashion and technology have changed. One includes our Lifeline personal emergency response system.

I talked to our pastor, Johnny Holt asking him about his Sister, Thelma Costlow, Nelson Costlow’s wife. Thelma is out of the hospital and is now in the Crane nursing home. Keep getting much better, Thelma, God bless you. We will keep you in our prayers. Allen Cunningham, hope you are all well and can be back to your church this Sunday.

Here are some things for you parents to remember:

Rules for bringing up a child:

Make home the brightest and most attractive place we can.

Make him or her responsible for helping in some daily duties at home.

Never punish in anger.Do not ridicule his or her ideas;

talk frankly on matters in which they are interested.

Encourage him and her to invite friends to our home.

Impress on their mind the fact that service and honesty are very important.

Let him and her see your enjoyment and profit from Bible reading and prayer.

Set an example in faithful church attendance, and interest in the work.

Be much in prayer for their salvation.

It’s bedtime and time to get this ready for the mail. Good night and keep me in your prayers and all of those folks in hospitals, in nursing homes, in rehab, and all the men and women in all the Army services.

“Train up a Child...”By: Pat LambPhone: 417-338-0959Questions or Comments: e-mail - [email protected]

Clubs Offer Value to Children Most children like to feel that they belong to a club or organiza-

tion. Quite often, they will make up a club of their own if one is not available. This is evident in large cities where gangs are formed. Fortunately, there are some good clubs that children can join that fill the need of acceptance and belonging.

For years, Boy and Girl Scouts have operated to provide worth-while activities for children. Awana clubs are available at many churches to provide spiritual growth and fellowship. 4H clubs, once thought of as clubs for country kids, are becoming more and more popular with children in all locales.

When considering a club for children, it is very important to match the needs and interests of the children to the club. It is also important to check out the leaders. Unfortunately, many clubs struggle to find adults who are willing to serve as leaders. In reality, many times the leaders are parents who are interested almost exclusively in their own children to the neglect of other children in the club. It is so very important that parents become involved in order to make sure the needs of all children are being met.

Most people are aware of the scouting program but are less in-formed about 4H. 4H stands for head, heart, hands, and health. It is not just a club for cooking, sewing, or raising animals although these projects can be chosen. There are over 40 projects that children can choose and actually may even choose another if a leader is avail-able. Our grandson is now ten years old. He joined 4H to work on a rocks project. Many boys at that age love rocks and, fortunately, his group had a geology professor from MU who worked with the group. A robotics group in Aurora works to enhance skills in science and technology. Other projects include photography, arts and theatre, babysitting, woodworking, rocketry, horticulture, nutrition, clothing, and entomology. The list goes on and on. Almost any interest a child has can be enhanced in 4H as long as a leader can be found.

4H is open to children who will reach their 8th birthday and will not reach their 19th birthday by January 1st of the current year. A pre-4H program called Clover Kids is available for children 5-7 years of age.

There are many retired people who have skills that can be of great value to our children. These retired people could offer their time and skill to working as a project leader for children in 4H. Others may prefer to work in Awanas, Scouts, or some other group. The need is great. Our children need the influence of older people. The groups can be kept small and manageable. Using our time to help the children is a true investment in the future. We need to step out of our comfort zones and do what we are able to do.

To obtain more information about 4H, either to join the club or volunteer to assist, Lesa King may be contacted at (417) 209-8406. She is the Youth Program Associate. Her e-mail is [email protected].

“Love never fails ”I Corinthians 13:8

We practice what we believe; all the rest is just talk.

Well the hunting and trapping season is winding down, and I don’t know if I’m happy or relieved or sad. There are some signs that the coming spring is approaching, like robins abound everywhere, and that I’m out in the woods. I looked up yesterday and saw a black buzzard soaring over something interesting although the wind was blowing so hard that he was having a hard time trying to make his circles. Course all of this could be because we haven’t had that much cold weather, and now snow or even rain. I would suspect that we will get our toes froze yet.

I punched the wrong button on my Facebook page the other day, and posted a couple of pictures of nice coyotes that I caught while trapping, and I immediately thought oops, I sure messed up because I normally just post my trapping pictures to my close trapping friends. So, I watched to see if I got any wicked messages back about how I am some kind of monster for trapping or even hunting. I was surprised by the number of likes, and comments, and yes I got one comment that thought I was a cruel caveman. Well I don’t live in a cave, although I know of a couple of nice caves that if you threw out the critters living there, might be a decent home, except for the dirt floors and critter poop.

The point is it’s hard in this day and time to do things that you like and not feel ashamed to enjoy the outdoors. I hate not being able to express myself in general to strangers or even friends that I know who don’t particularly like certain things involving the outdoors, and would question while I would enjoy some sport that involves death and consumption of wildlife. Still it surprises me that I work hard to please everyone and not offend. I understand that there world has changed and the rural areas are getting smaller and smaller as the population of the large cities spread out into the countryside. The old days are gone and the days of a person making ends meet and putting food on the table seem lost forever. Still there are signs of our younger generations that want to learn how to hunt, fish, or trap, and this makes me feel better. Still the most of the objections still come from people in the more heavily populated cities, who have change their views and have lost their concept of what life and death means not only to wildlife, but to our own human species, when we become immune to our worlds troubles.

I can remember and I’m sure a lot of you can when one of our Mother’s big wishes was to own a fur coat to wear to events or church. Now for a person to be seen in a real fur outfit is asking for someone to verbally accost that person or even worse as in one case to throw paint on the person and their clothing, just to prove a point that they don’t agree with that person’s views. Fur sales in the United States amount to about 5% of the world’s consumption of furs for clothing and trim. At the same time, there is the world’s largest populations such as China, Russia, and Korea control and complete for our fur resources for their needs and comfort.

You hear people say that everything we buy now comes from countries like the above, and we get all bent out of shape because we feel that it should have been made and purchased in the U.S.A., and yet we can’t bring ourselves to use our natural resources right where we live.

I’ve been told that I must be making a killing (pun intended) trapping animals. It is assumed by lots of people, that that’s the only reason that I get up early every morning and go to the outdoors to grab another dollar. This part is most irritating to me, as they never give a thought that I enjoy being out in the outdoors. I see things and animals that always bring pleasure to me, and this has always been so. I was raised in an era that was an accepted fact that animals and plants, and the whole outdoors was there for us to use. We all know that over the generations there has been abuses of our resources and some species have become scarce and what do we do, we gather together and find ways to re-populate the species. We form conservation departments and rules and laws to bring that species back to a safe population, such as deer and turkeys, and then we enjoy our work by doing a control harvest of a resource that we saved so we can enjoy the outdoors and yes our passions.

Believe it or not, we have more wildlife than ever and even right here in Missouri, we are seeing wildlife that hasn’t been here in decades. It is no longer unusual to see black bears and mountain lions right here in our rural backyards. Yet we have counties, and yes, whole states condemn hunting and trapping

because it is considered cruel and inhumane. Then we see the results of the decision when animals like coyotes and mountain lions move right into the cities and take up living. Animals are very adaptable, and when their food sources become hard to get in their wild, because of over population of a species and every house in the suburbs has pet food on their back porch, then where would you go if you were out there? And then we have the alarm screaming that coyotes are killing and eating their cats and dogs, and yes even attacking their children, and something must be done. Makes you wonder just what these communities expected to happen.

As I said, I hate having to talk around a subject that I love to do, just so I won’t be condemned, and yet no matter what I say or explain, I won’t be understood by some people and what even is worse is I love to fish and yes I love to eat fish. Boy, did I just open a whole new kettle of hate.

I had a nice visit on the phone with Phyllis Foster.

Monday I had a nice visit at a meeting with Patty McMullen and Barbara Opperman.

Thanks to Barbara Opperman for the nice comments about my news articles.

I had a really nice visit last week with JoAnn Smith at V-Mar Hardware in Crane.

Dottie Carr says that Jessie Henson is 100 ½ years old, and will be 101 on June 3.

On Tuesday at Joyce Kuh’s beauty shop, I visited with David and Neita Carl.

I had a visit with Gary Elmore last week at the Shop & Talk Flea Market.

Saturday evening I visited at the Crane Senior Housing with Charles and Ruby Bowling, Judy Coones, Joan Steele, and Pat Corn.

Tuesday night, Don and I went to the Crane boy’s basketball game. Both the Crane boys and girls teams are ranked #1 in the state for class 2.

Friday afternoon at Classey Corner, Charles and Ruby Bowling and I had a piece of strawberry pie and a cup of coffee. Ruby Bowling and Shirley Cooper were shopping at flea markets.

Elmo and Barbara Medlin and I had lunch at Classey Corner. Also I visited with Traci Branham and Sharon Ellis.

Friday morning I visited with Phyllis Foster at Peddler’s Junction flea market. Also there were Anita Rinehart, Richard Rinehart, and Carolyn Johnson.

There were several family and friends of Jordan Bowling in attendance Thursday night at the basketball game between Missouri Valley College and Evangel University in Springfield. Jordan is on the Missouri Valley team. Those there included Ray & Gina Rowe, Howard & Carolyn Bowling, Jackie & Jeff Bowling, Dallas Hilton, Danny Bowling, Don Newbold, and several others from the Crane area.

Don was in Pleasant Hill this past weekend attending a show choir program with 36 schools competing. His niece and nephew, Abby & Tucker Quinn are members of the Harrisonville choir.

Bye for now, Danny Bowling

I ran into my friend, Gail Groves the other night, and she told me about a new addition to their family. His name is Bobby, and he came to them with his own three-story house. He has many skills like chewing through things, biting when irritated; anyway, I have read that part, so you might ask Gail when you see her. I did not get to hold Bobby, but I did get to see him as he was in the backseat of her truck. He did not eye me too inviting. I understand they are very, very soft and very quick. Their coats are very expensive, but I think Gail’s little girl will see to it that Bobby never finds out what his coat is worth. Bobby is a chinchilla. I think she needs to get him a playmate. He may be lonesome. Good luck Gail. And good luck Bobby, I think you have landed in a good home.

Great-grandson Hunter also known as monkey had a birthday last week. He is a whopping three years old. He had a Scooby-Doo party with cupcakes and presents, and some little friends, and two sets of Grandparents, so he had a great day. Lots of toys and friends, what more can a three year old ask for. This has been a very busy week. There was no school Monday, so Granddaughter came over and suggested we go prom dress shopping. What fun, I was ready I love prom dress shopping. We could not eat lunch first, because her tummy might pouch out while trying on the dress then you cannot tell what it will really look like, she explained this to me. We went to Norma’s that is about a block off the square. There were a lot of girls there, and it was fun to watch and listen. Some people think prom is not a good idea, but if they would go and watch the girls faces as they look into the mirror they might change their minds. One little girl said the dress she had on made her feel like a princess. It did not, it was not that good, but she thought it was, and after looking at her face, I agreed. Her mother whispered to me, “Good grief, that makes her look like a pillow, but I bet that thing goes home with us.” It did. And the girl was ecstatic. I was thankful that mine picked a very pretty dress that looked well on her. It was my third favorite, but I did not say so. It was the first time in a year that I kept my mouth shut, and just agreed with everything. We had a great time and she had her dress and is very happy. Then we went to the mall. This is the Granddaughter that parks me in the food court while she gets what she came after. It is a ritual that I really like. I let her take off and then I go where I want. Then we meet up and go home. It was a great day. This is the last prom dress for this one. I have one more girl that I will get to shop with, but I have three years to save up for a dress for her, and it will take that long, and I do not care. If you get a chance to go shopping, go and don’t be shy, talk to the girls, just be positive and you will have a great day. One little girl found three that she wanted, and she couldn’t decide. Mom said she could only have one. She was going to try then all on again and she did. She still could not decide. Mom said she could try them all on one more time, but that was all. She was in the process of that when the sales girl walked through with a totally different dress. Yep, she changed her mind and bought the fourth one. I thought Mom was going to cry. She said they had been there since the store opened. Prom dress shopping is an experience.

Thursday, I went to Springfield to have lunch with the girls. I have two Granddaughters and an adopted Granddaughter and a Daughter-in-law that work for a lawyer in downtown Springfield. We went to lunch at a café called St. Michaels. I like it; they have salads, soups, and sandwiches, and some specials. It is very good food, and the service is great. It is not too expensive either. We had a great time. After lunch, they say mean things to me, and go back to work, and I wonder around over town. I did not find anything new this time, and I only went down to Little Theatre to get tickets for “The Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, but the box office was not open, so I shall have to go back. That is okay, I like going downtown Springfield to meddle around, but not on a cold or windy day. On a cold day, the square is the coldest place in the world.
