Handy Resources
An assembly is a great opportunity to announce your fundraising goal and challenge!
Student Leadership
Your students are your greatest resource! Get them involved in the planning of your Terry Fox School Run. Students develop
valuable skills while organizing and promoting your Run and it’s great to see them gain a sense of ownership of the cause. Encouraging student involvement will help them learn vital leadership, communication and teamwork skills, all while working towards a common goal that benefits their school community.
Elementary students will benefit by getting their chance at leadership and organization; secondary students can boost their resumes with important work-life skills, in addition to collecting volunteer hours. Your empowered students will share your Run tasks and enjoy lending their creativity while they take an active role in planning your Terry Fox School Run Day.
Lesson Plans & Teacher Resources
To help you in your fundraising efforts please refer to our website terryfox.org for several teacher resources:
• Teacher Lesson Plans (kindergarten – grade 8); written by teachers for teachersText and audio morning announcements to kick off your run (including recordings of Terry)
• Sample Permission Letter for distribution to parents
• Additional copies of pledge sheets, merchandise order forms, post run event forms, fundraising ideas

Working Together To Outrun Cancer
1
Hundreds of schools across Canada are taking the Terry Fox Challenge - a fun and easy way of enhancing your school fundraising event. It’s simple: issue a challenge to your students.
It’s an “IF / THEN” challenge.
IF the goal is met, THEN a fun promise is kept
IF we raise $2,500, THEN our Principal will kiss a pig’
IF each class raises $500, THEN the teachers get a pie in the face’
It’s a great way to get your students engaged in making a difference while building school spirit and working together – and it boosts funds.
When you host a challenge, be sure to record it on your Post Run Report form when submitting funds and your school will automatically be entered in a draw to win a visit from Terry’s brother, Fred Fox.
Going The Extra Mile
Spread the word! Let your school community know the what/when/where of your event to take your fundraising efforts to the next level:
• Send pledge sheets and student T-shirt order forms home with students• Decorate the front entrance display case with Terry Fox books, posters,
artwork• Use our morning announcements
found at terryfox.org over the P.A.
• Get student leaders to organize a kick off assembly and announce your goal
• Copy and paste the url link to your school’s fundraising page into your newsletter
• Include an article/letter in your newsletter on what Terry means to you
• Promote your event on the outdoor school marquee
• Contact local media to cover your event
Take the Challenge!

Pledge Sheet Tips
They’re easy to use. They’re easy to collect. And they’re super effective in increasing your funds!
We’re happy to provide one for each of your students. When asking students to collect pledges, here are a few tips.
• encourage students to set a goal and record it on their pledge sheet• make safety a priority: we don’t encourage door-to-door canvassing
unless accompanied by an adult• students can ask relatives and family friends for cash and cheque
donations• encourage students to record all the donor info on the pledge sheet
Online Fundraising:
Reaching your school’s fundraising goal with the help of your students is now even easier. Our newly launched site has been streamlined to improve student, teacher and donor access. Your school has already been set up on our website to receive online donations and a direct url link to your school’s page will be emailed to you before Run time. Simply copy and paste the link into your school’s website, Facebook page or newsletters and donations can be made right away to your school on our site.
Donors can also search for your school’s name on terryfox.org and then make a donation directly to the school name selected.
Students can go the extra mile too, just like Terry did. They can set up their own personal fundraising page under your school name at terryfox.org. Here they can upload pics of
themselves and send a message to ask friends or family to donate, or use the ones we provide. The donations they collect will show up on your school site right away.
Submitting Your Funds
It’s easy to submit your funds! As soon as your event is over, complete your 2017 Terry Fox School Post Event Report included in your kit. Send us the report and any pledge sheets, cheques, money orders that you have collected. Please don’t send cash and coin. All cash should be deposited into your school’s bank account and then submit a cheque to us for the amount, made payable to The Terry Fox Foundation.
Please do not postpone submitting your funds – it is our obligation to receipt our kind donors in a timely manner. 5

It’s Run Day!
It’s time to come together and celebrate all that’s Terry! Here are some tips to help you enjoy your day.
Opening Ceremonies:Salute your students and staff for their hard work and congratulate them for their fundraising accomplishments. Remind them that they are making a difference in the advancement of cancer research, to be safe on the Run and have fun!
Run With Pride:Kids can proudly show their school solidarity when wearing a Terry Fox tattoo. This year’s design dons a red maple leaf with Terry to celebrate our great Canadian hero in this special anniversary year.
Make it Personal:Be sure to have ordered your running stickers for all students and staff. Participants can personally dedicate their Run to someone they know that is battling cancer or to Terry, himself. If you need more stickers, please just give us a shout at 1 888 836-9786.
Pump up the volume with a new playset:(Walk This Way – Aerosmith, Five Hundred Miles – Proclaimers, Gonna Make You Sweat – C & C Music Factory, We Got The Beat – The Go Go’s, Shake it
Off – Taylor Swift, Uptown Funk – Bruno Mars, Theme From Rocky, Eye of The Tiger – Survivor, Wavin Flag – K’Naan)
Follow in Terry’s Footsteps: Set up route markers and retrace Terry’s steps along his Run by marking cities
or landmarks that Terry reached along your Run route. Starting at the Atlantic Ocean and heading across the country, your students will have fun learning more about Terry and our geography while raising funds for cancer research.
Stay Quenched:Be sure to keep your students hydrated with water filling stations and enlist the help of parent volunteers to help keep the crowd moving.
Photo Ops:Say cheese! Be sure to share any Run day shots with us on The Terry Fox Foundation fb page or on twitter at #TerryFoxSchoolRuns.
Finish Line Treats:Everyone loves a reward and there’s nothing more refreshing than a popsicle or ice cream station at the end of a hot Run.
The Finish Line

Despite Terry’s relative youth when he ran the Marathon of Hope in 1980, he showed remarkable vision in establishing many of the policies The Terry Fox Foundation abides by today.
We know that you, as School Organizers, are doing everything that you can to hold successful campaigns for The Terry Fox Foundation. At the same time, it is very important that our Policies and Guidelines are followed as they represent Terry’s philosophy and form the cornerstone for who we are and what we represent. Please contact your Provincial Office for clarification or questions.
NON-COMPETITIVEPolicy: Terry Fox Runs/Events are all-inclusive and non-competitive.
Guideline: We are not comfortable with an approach that singles out students who raise the most funds. We are most comfortable with the idea of noting students who make extraordinary efforts in collecting pledges (not related to final dollar value), best Homeroom Spirit, Homeroom with the highest percentage of participation, Homeroom with the greatest number of pledges, etc. Please do not ask students to raise a minimum amount in order to participate in your Terry Fox Event. Instead, set attainable goals for them. For example, challenge each student to collect $20 in pledges but be flexible if that goal is not met.
EXPENSESPolicy: Funds raised through Terry Fox events must be donated in full to the Foundation. No pledges or donations made to or by participants may be used to cover expenses associated with organizing an event.
Guideline: You cannot use donations raised for The Terry Fox Foundation to cover expenses for your event such as snacks, beverages, or even Terry Fox merchandise.
CONJOINING WITH ANOTHER CAUSEPolicy: Fundraising events that bear Terry’s name cannot be conjoined with any other cause, no matter how worthy.
Guideline: If your school hosts a Terry Fox event, it must be a standalone event. We must ask that you do not organize a Terry Fox fundraiser and then re-direct a portion to your school, or another cause.
USE OF TERRY FOX’S NAME AND LIKENESSPolicy: The Fox family has sole jurisdiction over the use of Terry’s name and likeness.
Guideline: Please contact Fred Fox ([email protected]) with an explanation of your request (for yearbook, website, video, etc). You will receive a permission form to complete and return.
TERRY FOX RUN ANNUAL DESIGNPolicy: Run Organizers may use the Terry Fox Run design to further promote their Run.
Guideline: Please contact the Provincial Office to obtain graphics and for further information on how it can be used. Do not alter our annual design or create your own logo for your Terry Fox event.
