TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

It gives me immense pleasure to invite you to the placement process of the Globalization and Labour program from the School of Management and Labour Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a unique public institution, and an amalgam of entrepreneurial zeal, multi-stakeholder partnerships and social responsibility. The institute was all this long before such terms became buzzwords. The contribution of TISS goes far beyond the mandate of a conventional educational institution: from providing dedicated and trained professionals to innovative and policy-oriented research, from offering models of successful field interventions to contributing to the formulation of national policies and programmes, and much more. The M.A. in Globalization and Labour program from the School of Management and Labour Studies was started in collaboration with the Global Labour University in partnership with the International Labour Organisation. The course stands unique among other Labour Studies and conventional management courses in the country as it focuses on finding sustainable solutions to the labour related problems in the country without discrediting the need for growth and profit. The current batch of GL offers a unique mix of students from different fields viz. Arts, Commerce, Law, Science and Engineering. Such a setting helps our students in expanding their perspectives regarding relevant issues in the labour sector and enables them to come up with more holistic solutions to the problems. Conceptual clarity is enhanced through participation in classroom discussions, assignments, case study analysis, presentations etc. while practical knowledge is provided through the rigorous field work and various internships and block placements. I am confident that our students will add immense value to any organization they go to. I invite you to have a look at the profile of our students. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for the invaluable support you have extended to us over the years. We look forward to nurture and grow old relationships and welcome new recruiters for a long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationship.

I am pleased to convey that a batch of talented young men and women are ready to take up the challenging responsibilities of the professional world. In 2017, the MA in Globalisation and Labour course completed a decade of dispensing high quality Policy and Labour Relations professionals to the industry. The course provides a framework to understand the diversity of experiences of globalisation and its impact on global social economy.

The students of this course hail from diverse backgrounds such as technology, arts, science, business and law. This program has been meticulously designed to ensure that our students have an understanding of global economic and societal realities with theoretical context as well as analytical acumen.

The unique competency of this learning stream is that it inculcates professionals who are versatile and sensitive to human diversity. While they have been well equipped to handle the analytics and content creation, they have been dealing with plural context of understanding human collectives, organisational lives and dynamics of livelihoods. As budding professionals they are an ensemble of creative initiation, collaboration and participatory design making.

We have ignited their minds to achieve success and excel in their chosen domains. These students were pushed to the ultimate limits of academic rigor and practical applications of theoretical knowledge through multiple block internships, field exposure and case studies. We have taken them beyond the frontiers of the prescribed syllabi and equipped them to face the toughest challenges of real time professional worlds. They have also been exposed to specially designed training programs to imbibe the much appreciated values of integrity, honesty and hard work. I have no doubt that these well-groomed students will make a mark in the organisations that they choose to be a part of. I am positive that in the years to come, they will bring laurels to the companies they work for and to their alma mater.

M.A in Globalisation & Labour is an integral part of the visionary initiative of Global Labour University (GLU) promoted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and supported and academically administered by TISS. In the process of globalisation, the economy in particular and society in general, are transforming at an incremental speed. The M.A. in G&L is aimed at providing new generation management competency to address the forthcoming challenges in research, training and optimising the contribution of human resources in the development process at micro as well as macro level. The beneficiaries or the students of this program in TISS have developed the competency to justify the aim of the GLU.

History of TISS On May 31, 1893, Swami Vivekananda and Jamshetji Tata sailed together on a ship from Japan to the United States. Interactions between these visionaries created the germ of the idea in Jamshetji to set up an institute of higher learning with a difference.

Started from Nagpada Neighbourhood House in Byculla in 1936. The institute was later shifted to Andheri, and then to its current location in Deonar. The present campus of the Institute, at Deonar in Mumbai, was opened on October 6, 1954, by the then prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. The 3rd cycle of assessment by National Assessment and Accreditation Commission (NAAC) rated TISS with a score of 3.89/4.00; the second highest score amongst all universities accredited by the NAAC thus far; and improving on the 2nd cycle score. Apart from its main campus in Mumbai, there are off campus locations at Tuljapur (Maharashtra), Hyderabad (Telangana) and Guwahati (Assam).

TISS is a centrally funded public university, and the University Grants Commission the Government of India provides the Institute’s Plan and Maintenance Grants. It operates from four campuses located in Mumbai and Tuljapur in Maharashtra, Guwahati and Hyderabad; and has expanded its education, training, research and outreach activities in several states through its centres at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Chennai, Ladakh, Nagaland, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, and Thiruvananthapuram. It has over 4500 students on roll; with nearly one-fifth being Doctoral Scholars, one tenth are undergraduates, and rest are graduate students pursuing post graduate programmes. In 2015-2016, 240 foreign students enrolled in TISS for various short term and long term programmes.

As an institution offering education in inter-disciplinary areas of Social Sciences, our curriculum strives to enable students to understand the pulse of society and chart change processes that create appropriate solutions to some of the most pressing issues in the country; & become skilled professionals capable of working with the Government, Corporates, and Civil Society. TISS is engaged in knowledge creation that is fundamental to understanding ways of achieving inclusive sustainable development; access to Health, water, sanitation, education and employable skill; peace building, and national security. At any given point in time TISS faculty is working on over 500 research initiatives. TISS has collaborative research and student exchange programs with over 100 universities and institutions across the world, in addition to being member of several university networks – Himalayan Universities Consortium, Erasmus Mundus Partnership, Global Labour University, BRICS Network University, McDonnell International Scholars Academy and others.

TISS believes in and strives for a strong Nation State capable of ensuring dignified existence of all people, particularly the poor, vulnerable, and marginalised sections of the population. Over the years, TISS has consistently built important bridges between vulnerable communities and all branches of the government to generate alignment on national development goals that secures the welfare of all people. As an academic institution of high caliber, it is not aligned to any ideology; but in true academic tradition, introduces all grand theories and perspectives to students.

Quintissence also saw performances from several talented people from the industry

TISS Literature Festival SYAHI - The Literary Society presented TISS Literature Festival, initiated with the aim to celebrate excellence in the field of literature spread across time and space, within the Indian continental presence and beyond. The literary tradition especially within India is made richer and more vibrant due to the diverse ethnicitiess and cultural forms that have existed here. As the name suggests, it was an intellectual space for resistance against domination and oppression. The aim was to build a space for writers and readers who envision free flow of thoughts and ideas. For students of TISS, the focus has always been on academic and creative work of writers and authors and we have tremendous respect for their contribution to Art and Literature. There were a variety of events in this three day festival, on January 27-29, 2017, which focused not only the celebration of literary extravaganza, but also development of a nuanced understanding of the influence of words.

National CSR Hub

The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) under Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises introduced the CSR Guidelines in March 2010 for the Central Public-Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to commit themselves to the concept and practical implementation of Corporate Social responsibility. These guidelines look deeper into the matter of Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility.

Under these guidelines, the CSR interventions are required to be thoroughly and scientifically researched and on this basis the intervention programmes have to be formulated and implemented. For this, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was invited to set up the National CSR Hub in 2010 and hence the HUB was formally launched on 21st March 2011.

The National CSR Hub has come up with the concept of a national level repository of social sector projects that are scrutinised for programmatic and financial soundness and ready for receiving funds. Thus, was launched the National CSR Hub Proposal Bank at the third TISS-UNICEF Regional Capacity Building Workshop for Empanelled Development Partners, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 25th April 2016. The Proposal Bank is a collection of the outstanding flagship project proposals of the empanelled development partners of the Hub. Companies are in search for such outstanding projects and NGOs need funds to implement such projects. There is often a disconnect between the two sectors which has caused a delay in the implementation of CSR activities.

At the moment, the Proposal Bank is only open to the empanelled development partners of National CSR Hub; each empanelled development partner can submit one project proposal each towards the Proposal Bank. The proposals submitted by the development partners are subjected to intense scrutiny. The scrutiny process has two main stages: review by the National CSR Hub team, and scrutiny and analysis by the Faculty Mentors and Advisors of the Proposal Bank. Consistency with legal parameters, impact orientation, innovativeness, replicability, sustainability, community needs-based justification and geographical and social targeting are among the major parameters applied in the scrutiny process. Only highly outstanding proposals would be finally accepted into the Proposal Bank. The list of proposals selected into the Proposal Bank will be made available to Companies and other funders and also on the National CSR Hub website. Reasonable efforts will be taken by the Hub to pro-actively connect accepted proposals with interested companies & companies that are thematically & geographically well-suited to support them.

This intervention by the Hub towards linking the Not for Profits to companies is a step ahead in bridging the skills, knowledge, relationship, and resource gaps between the Corporate and NGO sector. For more information visit the National CSR Hub website at csr.tiss.edu or write to contact. [email protected].

About The Course Inception of the Course

A meeting of various academicians and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) transformed the idea of a Global Labour University (GLU). The Global Labour University (GLU) is a network of trade unions, universities, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung & the ILO (International Labour Organisation) to deliver high-level qualification programmes. It offers Masters courses in four different countries on trade unions, sustainable development, social justice, international labour standards, multinational companies, economic policies and global institutions & promotes research cooperation on global labour issues. The Universities in this network comprises of University of Kassel & Berlin School of Economics & Law in Germany, University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, State University of Campinas in Brazil, Pennsylvania State University in United States and TISS and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in India. The formative discussions started in the year 2004 and in the year 2007, the M.A. Globalisation and Labour program was born in TISS. The M.A. Globalisation and labour comes under the school of management and labour studies. The center for labour studies of school of management and labour studies is a part of BRICS Network Universities (NU). As part of BRICS NU, M.A. Globalisation and Labour is one of the three programs offered by TISS along with M.A./M.Sc. in Climate Change and Sustainability Studies and Integrated M.Phil.- Ph.D. in Development Studies.

What Makes Us Different?

Every Graduate who has ever walked through the hallowed corridors of TISS imbibes within him/ herself a unique quality. The University boasts a rich diversity of students from within the country and from outside too. The program MA in Globalization and Labour (GL) from School of Management of Labour Studies (SMLS) is one of the very few programs which witness a participation of the international students. The students here have command not only on the theoretical subject matter, but also boast a wide range of practical skill which they have honed through field practicum and internships. TISS believes in providing extensive practical understanding of the field to its students.

Vision and Pedagogy

The course was started in 2007 with a vision to produce empathetic yet aware professionals who would strive for sustainable long term solutions to labour related issues in both the organised & unorganised sectors. The pedagogy of learning includes theoretical, practical application of theory through fieldwork, individual & group assignments, case studies, workshops and dissertation. The course stands unique among other conventional Labour Studies and Management courses in the country as it upholds the values of social justice, fairness and equity and at the same time does not discredit the need for growth and profit.

11

Final Placement Brochure 2017-18

A Crucible of Ideas

Since the very beginning, the course boasts a mixture of national and international students. This year, the class witnessed participation of students from Germany, Finland, Czech Republic, Iran, China and Kazakhstan. This type of environment aids the students in gathering different perspectives, sharing knowledge and building skills. The students are trained in looking at the different aspects of a problem and in finding the best solutions for it.

Mission and World View

The course aims at creating a sustainable environment in the labour market of the country, encouraging development along with social upliftment of the members of the society, with no party having an upper hand over another. It stands for the dignity of humans involved in different types of work and the decency of the working conditions. We believe that a sustainable balance can always be reached among the stakeholders in an industrial environment and a reasonable solution can always be achieved through democratic means. We do not believe in demonising any of the stakeholders of the tripartite system of industrial system and believe that the concern for the interests of each of them is important for carrying out a successful enterprise.

Legacy

The alumni of the course are working in some of the finest institutions within the country and outside it. Ranging from private to governmental organisations, from Trade Unions to International Organisations and from Educational Institutions to NGOs, the students of the course have proved their mettle in different sectors in this short span of ten years. GL has emerged as an umbrella course not limiting itself to labour studies and human resource management, but also provides expertise in CSR and Corporate Sustainability, Industrial Relations and Labour Economics. Thus, it had developed itself as a niche course among the plethora of similar courses.
