SJCS SPECIAL EVENTS SUMMER 2008

Coskey Public Speaking Seminar (CS 550) The SJCS will once again be offering the Coskey Public Speaking Seminar to better prepare students for the variety of public presentations which they will be giving in their careers, from committee reports to formal lectures. This six session seminar is required for Second Year students. This year’s seminar will be taught by Drew Kugler, a noted consultant in leadership training and the founder of The Kugler Company, a Los Angeles-based leadership coaching practice for professional services organizations and corporations. (Note to Second Year students: Please see the weekly schedule for days and times, and please make sure to include the seminar in your course registration.) Professional Writing Seminar (CS 551) Written communication is critical to success in Jewish Communal Service, both as a graduate student and as a professional in the field. For the first time, the SJCS is offering a Professional Writing Seminar, taught by Rabbi Julie Pelc, to enhance students’ skills and help them develop professional written communication styles. This six session seminar is required for First Year students and optional for Second Year students. (Note to First Year students: Please see the weekly schedule for days and times, and please make sure to include the seminar in your course registration.) Rabbi Louis Bernstein Scholar in Residence Monday, August 4-Wednesday, August 6 This year we are delighted to have Shifra Bronznick, a leading consultant to not-for-profit organizations in change management, as our fourth Rabbi Louis Bernstein Scholar in Residence. Shifra will be a guest presenter in various classes on Monday, August 4

AWP is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to advance women into leadership positions in Jewish life; stimulate Jewish organizations to become more equitable, productive and vibrant environments; and promote policies that support work-life integration and flexibility for professionals and volunteers. Currently, Shifra is designing, Women Rule! O The Oprah Magazine and the White House Project’s Leadership Training Program. She is also the lead investigator of Visioning Justice and the American Jewish Community, a major inquiry commissioned by the Nathan Cummings Foundation to identify the trends and strategies that influence the growth and impact of Jewish social justice. SJCS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SUMMER 2008 Academic Policies The official HUC-JIR Student Academic Handbook will be distributed to all students during summer orientation. Please refer to the Handbook for a complete description of academic policies and procedures of HUC-JIR. Hebrew Policy All students enrolled in the School of Jewish Communal Service are required to have completed one year of college-level Hebrew or its equivalent, based on the submission of appropriate transcripts or by passing a Hebrew equivalency examination. Students who have not already completed this requirement must meet with Professor Rivka Dori, Director of Hebrew Studies, who will advise them of their options and outline for them the level of Hebrew competency they will be required to achieve prior to their graduation from HUC-JIR. If you have questions about your level of Hebrew proficiency, please call Rivka Dori at (213) 749-3424, ext. 4266; or check with Richard Siegel. “Lunch and Learn” Course (CS 510B) The Tuesday “Lunch and Learn” is required for all students and can be taken for credit once during the course of studies. This year’s “Lunch and Learn” is organized around the theme: “Presenting Culture: (In) Forming Jewish Identity.” Sessions will feature prominent curators and producers from the LA area who are responsible for presenting Jewish culture in a variety of media: art exhibitions, film festivals, concerts, special events and public lecture series. Presenters will discuss the motivations, objectives, mechanics, artist relations, and marketing behind successful Jewish cultural productions, as well as how they evaluate success and impact. Students interested in earning credit should register and speak with Richard Siegel. Israel Seminar Offered every other winter, this 2 ½ -week intensive experience exploring the core issues of Israel-Diaspora relations is an integral part of the School of Jewish Communal Service curriculum and is required for all students. The tentative dates for this year’s Israel Seminar, entitled “Israel at 60: Assessing the Character of the Jewish State,” are from Wednesday, December 17, 2008 through Friday, January 2, 2009 (final dates will be determined over the summer). Incorporating classes and briefings with Israel’s leading scholars and authorities, the Seminar’s itinerary includes meetings with key decision-makers, visits to social and human service agencies, and tours to historic and contemporary sites throughout the country. Students will have the opportunity to meet their professional counterparts serving Israeli institutions, and begin to grapple with ways to integrate Israel into their professional identity. Prof. David Mendelsson, the faculty coordinator and seminar scholar, will be on campus at the beginning of the summer and will be conducting a three session Orientation to the Israel Seminar (CS 552) which is required for all students. (See weekly schedule for days and times, and please make sure to include the seminar in your course registration.) Books and Course Readers For the summer program, a master list of books and readings requested by faculty for all courses is compiled by Hattie Pearson, Administrative Assistant, School of Jewish Communal Service. The booklist will be distributed to students by email. Mentorship Program The SJCS offers a Mentorship Program through which students are paired with lay mentors to gain insights into the field and reflect on the SJCS experience. An orientation to the Mentorship Program will be presented during the summer by Sara Greene, the Mentorship Coordinator. For more information on the Mentorship Program, please speak with Richard Siegel. Student Health Fee There is a mandatory HUC Student Health Fee for all students enrolled in six units or more per term. The HUC Student Health Fee gives students access to the USC Student Health Center located on the USC campus adjacent to HUC. Students who pay the summer health fee may use the USC Student Health Center beginning

May 19, 2008. Health Center services are available through the summer until August 17, 2008. The Health Fee is $192. The Health Center provides high-quality, client-oriented services and resources in health promotion and disease prevention, primary care and counseling. Although the health fee covers most Health Center services, nominal fees are charged for some specialty services, prescriptions, immunizations and copies of records and x-rays. The health fee does not cover the cost of hospitalization or specialty care that cannot be obtained at the USC Student Health Center. Medical Insurance All HUC-JIR students are required to be covered by comprehensive health insurance. Students entering HUC-JIR Los Angeles campus beginning with the summer program are permitted to enroll in the USC Student Health Insurance Plan for the summer. Students can sign up for the USC Student Health Insurance Plan on a prorated basis by completing an enrollment application, indicating dates of coverage and making the payment. Continuing HUC students, who attended during the Spring Semester and did not enroll in the USC Student Health Insurance Plan, may not enroll in the USC plan until the next enrollment period which is Fall Semester, 2008. These students should enroll in another comparable insurance plan for the summer. Students who have questions or need assistance in selecting a plan should contact Carol Sofer, the HUC-USC Liaison, for additional information. Lockers In order to provide students with a secure and convenient space for their personal items, lockers have been installed in the basement level. They are located in the west hallway, beyond the faculty offices. At the beginning of the summer program, students should select a locker and then report its number to Madelyn Katz, Director of Student Life, to have it reserved. Students need to provide their own locks for the lockers. Personal items should be stored in student lockers and not left in the student lounge, restrooms or in classrooms. Mailboxes All students have individual mailboxes located in the room next to the stage in the student lounge. Students may receive mail in care of HUC-JIR, 3077 University Avenue, Los Angeles, 90007. Faculty mailboxes are located behind the receptionist’s desk on the first floor. Student Identification Cards Official student photo identification cards will be issued as part of the new security system being installed this spring. Joan Spearman, Director of Operations, will provide more information about the IDs and security system at Orientation. Parking To park in the HUC parking lot at the rear of the building, vehicles must be registered and display an HUC permit. Parking permits are issued to HUC students, faculty and staff through the receptionist desk. Visitors to the campus are required to sign in, registering their vehicles at the Security desk to avoid being ticketed or towed. There is no public parking in the HUC lot. HUC Skirball Cultural Center The HUC Skirball Cultural Center, located in West Los Angeles/Sepulveda Pass, is devoted to interpreting Jewish life for a sizable public, with a particular emphasis on American Jews. The Center also explores the role of pluralism in American society. The Skirball Museum is a core component of the Cultural Center; its collection of art and artifacts related to Judaism is regarded as among North America’s two or three most important. HUC students and staff receive a one-year complimentary individual membership. Staff and students must present an HUC identification card at the admission desk and the membership is valid for one year from that first visit. Hours are: Tuesday through Saturday, noon-5 pm; Sunday, 11 am-5 pm. Closed Monday. For further information, call (310) 440-4500. INTERNET ACCESS HUC/USC dual degree students have the ability to access the internet through USC. Because they are USC students, they may request this directly from USC. HUC-only students may make this request by calling the Helpdesk at (213) 749-3424, ext. 4212. Within five business days after receipt of this request, the account will be ready to access on-line. Regular e-mail clients can be configured to check USC e-mail by using the instructions on the USC website. Students who have problems accessing their accounts or questions about this process, may call the Helpdesk at the above number, or send an e-mail to [email protected]. Only HUC-JIR students are permitted to use the computers in the library and Ha Mercaz to access the internet during normal office hours. ***Due to security and virus infection concerns, students are NOT allowed to disconnect any computer from the HUC-JIR network and connect their personal computers. It is against HUC-JIR policy for student computers to be connected via network cable to the HUC-JIR network. A free, unencrypted wireless internet signal named “Beit Midrash” is available for this purpose, and can be accessed by any student laptop with wireless capability.*** Please be considerate of others when using computer resources and avoid listening to the radio or watching streaming video. This slows down network access for everyone. There is limited bandwidth for the campus, and non-work related usage is strongly prohibited.
