The School of Earth and Environment is one of the largest and most vibrant Schools in the country. Experts within the School study the Earth from its core to the atmosphere, with expertise ranging from geophysics and surface processes to atmospheric science, climate change and environmental sustainability. We have one of the largest research clusters of Earth, environmental and social scientists in the UK and internationally.

In 2010 our staff and students moved into a new £23 million building with state-of-the-art facilities for both teaching and research, bringing together all the School’s departments under one roof for the first time. The community includes more than 80 academic staff, around 50 additional support and teaching staff and over 100 postgraduate students.

The Faculty of Engineering is one of the UK’s top Engineering and Computing faculties. 75% of our research activity is rated internationally excellent or world leading in the latest UK government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Our teaching and research is delivered though our five schools:

• School of Civil Engineering

• School of Computing

• School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

• School of Mechanical Engineering

• School of Process Materials and Environmental Engineering

The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s top universities. Established in 1904, we are part of the prestigious Russell Group – the 20 leading research universities in the UK, and are well known throughout the world for our quality teaching and research.

Key facts:

• One of largest single campus universities in the UK, just 1 mile from the city centre

• Home to 30,500 students from over 130 countries

• A thriving students’ union – one of the most active in the UK

• A £360m investment in new buildings and facilities

• Ethos of research led teaching

Training...CiPEG provides a range of courses in petroleum related subjects. Teaching is research-informed to take students to the forefront of their chosen discipline and on to successful careers.

Undergraduate training includes; geology, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. We offer MSc courses in exploration geophysics, structural geology and oil field corrosion and PhD projects are available in all our research areas.

In addition we can provide short courses in the following subjects:

• Environmental engineering and waste management

• Fault seal analysis

• Power and process engineering

• Reservoir compartmentalisation

• Safety engineering

• Sedimentology (short courses and field trips)

• Seismic interpretation

• Structural geology (short courses and field trips)

• 3D visualisation techniques

Facilities...CiPEG staff and students have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities including:

• Electron optics facility

• Flow assurance – erosion and corrosion laboratory and mineral scaling research laboratory

• Sorby environmental fluid dynamics laboratory

• Surface analysis – including nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy

• Wolfson multiphase flow laboratory – routine and special core analysis

Consultancy...CiPEG staff offer a wide variety of consultancy services, short courses and field workshops in the geoscience and engineering disciplines, all informed by ongoing research and supported by leading edge experimental facilities.

Consultancy enquiries are welcomed, especially in the following areas:

• Applied sedimentology

• Basin/regional scale structural analysis

• Fault Seal analysis

• Geomechanical modelling

• Special core analysis

• Tight gas petrophysics

CiPEG is the Centre for Integrated Petroleum Engineering and Geosicence at the University of Leeds. CiPEG fosters and promotes multidisciplinary petroleum-related research and training at the University of Leeds. By combining expertise in Engineering and Geoscience, our vision is to become the leading UK provider of integrated research and training to the oil industry.

CiPEG links University of Leeds staff from different Faculties who share active research interests of direct relevance to the hydrocarbon and energy sector, thereby providing a single point of contact for all enquires for petroleum related research and training at the University.
