community I thank particularly the Year 6 parents, the Tudor Rose Auxiliary and the individuals who dared to

think big, gave much time and expertise and enabled this project to come to fruition.

The 1st XI Cricket squad had a very successful tour to Queensland from November 3rd - November 7th, playing

matches against King’s Christian College, Reedy Creek, St Stephen’s College, Coomera and All Saints Anglican

School, Merrimac, winning two of their three games. The tourists also squeezed in a visit to Seaworld - coming

away with some colourful memorabilia! Many thanks to Mr Sam Goodfellow and Mrs Sharon Johnson for all the

work that went into organising this tour and for looking after the students whilst on tour. From all reports, the

Tudor House 1st XI Cricket team members were fine ambassadors for our School.

We were pleased to welcome new and existing members of our School community to the PK - 2 Information

Evening on Tuesday Nov 7th followed by the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Orientation session the next

day. Judging by the boys’ and girls’ enthusiasm for this classroom experience, the 2019 School year will get off to

a very positive start.

The Year Five students, along with Miss Tina Brown, Miss Stacey Baker and Ms Emma Johnson organised a

beautiful Remembrance Day Commemoration Service in the School Chapel on Wednesday November 9th. The

Field of Honour, with a cross on the lawn for each fallen Old Tudorian, wreaths created by each class, poppies

made and worn by each student and the address at the service by The King’s School Community Chaplain,

Reverend Matthew Pickering made this occasion particularly memorable. Thank you to the Tudor House students

who represented our School with such reverence at the Bowral Remembrance Day Commemoration on Sunday

November 11th in the Memorial Gardens. Particular thanks to Elliot Perkins who read a prayer at St Jude’s Church

preceding the gathering around the Bowral War Memorial. Weekly, in the Tudor House War Memorial Assembly

Hall, we acknowledge Old Tudorians who gave their lives fighting for their country.

The Year 6 students eagerly await their Camp which starts this week on Tuesday November 13th at Wombaroo.

We look forward to hearing about their challenging experiences, which includes a hike up the notorious Mt Jellore,

when they return.

Thank you for supporting and celebrating Tudor House

2018 at the Foundation Dinner on Friday November 9th.

We are most grateful for the donation of auction items.

Money raised enables us to continue to honour our unique

traditions and to move forward to ensure we’re preparing

our boys and girls to flourish in their future lives. Recently

the Foundation provided financial support (along with

money generously raised by Tudor House parents in the

past and private benefactors) with the new multi-purpose

(tennis) court, hopefully ready (weather permitting) for Leavers’ Week, the renovated cricket nets on RB Darke,

the girls’ bathroom (Boarding House) and countless building upgrades. Mrs Rosemary Abrahams (Chairman of

the King’s School Council) and Mr Michael Abrahams, The Headmaster and Dr Jen George, Mr Ed Simpson and

The Hon John Sharp AM (Old Tudorians and Tudor House Foundation) were delighted to attend the Foundation

dinner. Please have a look at the Dinner photos taken by AJ Moran, on the Tudor House Facebook site. Thank you

to Mrs Sue Trudeau and Mrs Jo Grinham for all their help behind the scenes to make this wonderful event such a

success. We raised $19,600 on the night from our guests’ support of the raffle of the Bunda Tudor Rose cufflinks,

and the varied live and silent auction items.

I look forward to seeing as many parents and carers (current and future) as possible at the Annual Drinks with the

Head of School, this year at the HOS Residence on Thursday November 22nd (the evening before the Year 1 - 6

Tuesday November 27th at 11.30am and evening performance, Wednesday November 28th at 6.00pm) the Choir

is preparing for Christmas performances at Bowral House (Wednesday Nov 21st) and the Carol Service (Friday

December 7th 6.00pm) and we’re just about to start whole School Carol rehearsals.

Boarding News

Follow Medley House on Instagram: tudor_house_boarders

The Year 6 Dance was held recently at Tudor House and it was a tremendous

success. The students made a lovely

bracelet during Art Class for their

partners out of cubes of decorated, baked

clay and the girls took them home as a

memento of the wonderful evening. The

Year 6 Mums made the hall look amazing

and Mr Woodburn’s laser lights and

smoke machine added a nice finishing touch! In true style, Justin Bojanac

(Bowral) arrived in a stretch limousine and Jack Clancy (Berrima) was chauffer driven in his Dad’s restored Morris

J van.

The following day the boarders enjoyed some great games of sport. The Yr 4 Super 8 team played against Barker

at James Park.

The Yr 5 Red and Blue Super 8

teams played Barker at home. The

1st XI enjoyed a very close game

against Mosman, at home, on RB

Darke.

The Tudor House Open Softball

teams played St Patrick’s at home.

The Tudor House 2019 Prospective Boarders’ Experience was held at the end

of last week. H dorm is now a girls’ dream bedroom and the girls loved it. It

was great seeing girls join in the game of touch cricket on Hamilton Lawn

after school, jump in the pool after dinner and then join the boys for a movie

in the common room after dinner.

I have had emails, texts and phone calls from our prospective families thanking Tudor House Boarding Staff for

“going to the special trouble of providing all those wonderful activities”.

So you know, I do my best to explain that we actually haven’t done anything

“special” other than allow prospective students a chance to experience a “a

normal day or two in the life of a Tudor House Boarder”.

The next Tudor House Boarders’ Experience for New and Interested

Boarders for 2019 will be held from Thursday November 22 to Friday

November 23 with New and Current Parents Drinks with Head of School

on Thursday November 22 from 6pm - 7.30pm

Last Wednesday, Hugo Wood (Grenfell), Will Johnson (Grenfell), Hunter Bowman (Harden), Jack Binnie

(Singleton), Angus Lenehan (Harden), James Parry-Okeden (Winsdor) from the annual 1st XV Cricket Tour of

Queensland. Hugo scored 10 runs against St Stephens and took a wicket (run out) with some great fielding. Angus

scored 50 against St Stephens and Will Johnson took a great wicket too with some snappy bowling.

This weekend, our 1st X1 were defeated by St Aloysius at home.

Angus Lenehan and Will Johnson both claimed a scalp each and

Hunter made a lovely pull shot that made the boundary. Our Year

U 11’s played Sydney Grammar Edgecliff. Archie Hallett (Coolah)

had a good innings at the crease and scored 15 runs. Harley Jones

(Bronte) and Miller Twomey (Sutton Forest) also played Grammar

in the U10’s Super 8 Cricket. Miller claimed two wickets with

some lovely bowling. Harley took a catch at mid-on and made

twenty runs at the crease.

Han Chusang (Bangkok) and Tom Jenkinson (Moss Vale) enjoyed

a great game of Softball against Trinity Grammar School. Han made one home run and got three people out, with

a great catch at second base.

Here and There

Mrs Susi Bell wrote to me recently with news the Tudor House Rose

her son Jack Bell (’17) received as a Leaver’s Gift is extremely

vigorous and flowered well all last season (see photo, left). Jack is

going very well at King’s and he topped his class in tech drawing. On

the drought, Susie writes: “Our paddocks are green with very short

grass and Dave hasn’t had to feed the cattle for 6 days. We’ve had

nearly 3 inches for October but we are a long way from being safely

out of danger. Hopefully we’ll get some more.”

Iggy Westwood (‘17) reports that he is enjoying Year 7 at Waverly College. He says he has been making lots of

new friends and is studying very hard. The study has clearly paid off because Iggy got 94% in his end of year

maths exam!

Mackenzie Bowman (’14) emailed me to say he is in his final year of

Engineering and Project Management at the University of Sydney. He has also

been awarded a cadetship with Prime Constructions. (Mack is pictured, right).

Toby Salkeld (’14) left Medley House (after boarding from Year 4 to Year 6) and

boarded at King’s. Toby has enjoyed many aspects of school life including camp

week and the opportunities to be involved in singing and drama. He has been

able to work on the tech crew of the musical 'We Will Rock You' and also play

the part of an orphan in Fagin’s Gang in the Tara musical, Oliver! This year Toby

moved to Bishop Barker Harris with four of his friends from Tudor House and has shared a room with Ryu (’14)

all year.

Theo Strang (’09) has also been in touch. After leaving Tudor House at the end of Year 6, he attended The Scots

College. Now Theo is in his 3rd year of a Bachelor of Engineering Honours/Bachelor of Project Management at

Sydney University. He lives in, at St Paul's College and plays rugby for

the Sydney University Football Club. Theo represented 1st Grade for the

2018 season where his team went on to win the Shute Shield. Theo writes

that the Leavers of ‘09 are still a close group and keep in regular contact

with each other.

2018 Queensland Cricket Tour News Over the Mid Term break of the 3 - 7 November, the First XI went to the Gold Coast for the 21st Cricket Tour.

Saturday 3rd November: We set off from Tudor at 9:15am on Saturday and made our way to the airport. We checked

in, went through security and made our way to lunch in the food court. After lunch we walked to the Gate and

awaited our flight to the Gold Coast. The boys were exceptional on the plane and in the airport. When we arrived

in the Gold Coast, our driver dropped us at our accommodation at Ashmore Palms. We quickly settled into our

rooms and prepared for a grocery shop for breakfasts. Off to dinner at the Ashmore Tavern and 11 boys had 450g

rump steaks. We walked back to our rooms for a night in.

Sunday 4th November: Today we headed to SeaWorld. The boys had the freedom to explore the park in groups.

They enjoyed the Storm and Jet Ski rides. The highlight for the day was the Jet Ski show where the professional

riders did tricks and moves that the boys had to see to believe. Back to Ashmore Palms for a swim, dinner and then

back to the dorms to relax and write diaries.

Monday 5th November: We played cricket against King’s Christian College today. Jack lost the toss and were set

out to bowl. We bowled well, keeping King’s to 135 off 30 overs. Wickets went to Will, Hunter and Darcy. Charlie

took two wickets while claiming a runout as well. Hugo also managed a runout. When we batted we reached their

runs in 20 overs. Jack O’Brien scored an unbeaten 50 and Darcy an unbeaten 20. The boys displayed great

sportsmanship.

Tuesday 6th November: We played St Stephan’s

today for the 21st Year in a row. We were sent in

for a bowl again. We kept them to 4 for 135 (same

as King’s) off 40 overs. We had a great lunch and

went into bat. Reversing the order, we batted well.

Angus scored an unbeaten 50 off 21 balls. Charlie

had an unbeaten 36 and James was bowled on 27.

We ended up on 238, winning the Tudor/St

Stephan’s Cup for the 3rd Year in a row.

Wednesday 7th November: Our final game of tour

was against All Saints in our 21st game against each

other. We were sent in to bat and scored a modest 131 off 30 overs. Will Johnson scored 34 and Angus 28. After

lunch, we bowled and bowled well. Austin McLean took 2 wickets, Will Johnson and Jack O’Brien took one each.

Runouts went to Inigo, Phoenix Sparke and Will Johnson. They needed 3 off the last over, and after 4 dots, it was

looking close. But as the cricket gods were obviously bored, the ball was edged past fine leg for 4. We lost by 1 run

and 1 ball. The boys played very well. After the presentations, we changed and headed to the airport to head home.

The Queensland Tour was a great opportunity for the boys and they met every expectation handed to them.

Their behaviour was extraordinary throughout the whole 5 days. Thanks to Sharon for giving up her time to be

with the boys on Tour. Thank you Frank for dropping us off and picking us up safe from the airport. It was

greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the boys for an amazing tour. You made being your coach very pleasant.

Well-Being at Tudor House

What is Well-Being?

A sustainable state characterised by predominantly positive feelings, attitudes and relationships. It involves resilience, self-

efficacy and a high level of satisfaction with self. PDH&PE Syllabus 2019

How then do we teach Well-Being?

Research supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools demonstrates numerous benefits for students

including well-being. The significance of educational programming to support ethical competencies alongside or

within SEL curriculum needs to be incorporated within all areas of teaching. Doing so would advance the efforts

of educators to provide an education for the whole child (Burroughs, 2017). Teaching children to believe (self-

efficacy) in their abilities to manage, solve and reach various competencies should be inherent in all areas of

education (Bandura, 1997). Evidenced research indicates a tendency for primary school staff members to target

social and emotional behaviours valued by specific groups of children (Wood, 2018). Furthermore, by bringing

those experiences with constructs of character governed by morals, SEL operationalised as a tool to assimilate its

promotion of behaviours and values deemed central to positive citizenship.

Kidsmatter is one component of our resources we utilise at Tudor House when developing our programmes

addressing social and emotional intelligence development with our students. While this is inherent in our entire

teaching and learning it receives greater focus in Colour Family Groups and addresses outcomes of the PDHPE

Key Learning areas.

As part of our Well-Being developmental work for 2019, we invite you to be a part of this aspect of your child’s

education. Firstly, we ask you to take a few minutes to complete the online survey which is at

https://secure.peoplepulse.com.au/survey.php?mid=140124ef0657b439330. At the website, you are asked to

identify your school: Tudor House School. Privacy Information about this survey is available at

https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/sites/default/files/public/KidsMatter_Parent_Survey_Information.pdf.

Secondly, if you would like any further information regarding any aspect of this part of the curriculum, please

contact me, and I will be happy to share with you where we are at in our programme development for 2019. Our

students will be completing the survey for children during school time.
