I would like to thank the directors for their vision and continued support to make ISSR one of the premier schools in Siem Reap. The move to the present site marks a turning point in the high school’s development. The campus has been retro-fitted to make it more suitable for secondary level students and the students can now enjoy the more spacious environment. The school population has now increased to over 110 students, and our Year 7 to 9 classes are close to full. We also now have a Y13 A2 level class comprising 7 students. These are positive signs for the future and I look forward to seeing the progress the school makes in the upcoming year.

Academic Year 2018-19

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new and returning students, parents and staff to the High School of ISSR, and I look forward to our continued collaboration in building upon the many developments that took place last academic year. At this time last year, there was talk of a move to the present site and at the time it seemed like a very ambitious idea. However due to the careful strategic planning of the directors and the ISSR staff, here we are in what is essentially a new high school.

Team building activities : August 13th 2018 On the first day back at school, the students were welcomed by their tutors and first attended an assembly where new students and teachers were introduced. We also welcomed back our teachers from last year. As is tradition the students participated in a series of team-building activities, and it was very encouraging to see the spirit and enthusiasm of the students as they participated in a series of challenging team events.

Teaching Staff 2018-19 A major part of the success on an international school is determined by the quality of the staff. Due to the expansion of the A-Level Program there are more teachers in the High School this year. We have been very fortunate to have been able to assemble a great groups of teachers to guide our students over the next few years. Our new and existing teachers have an excellent range of skills and experience, and are able to contribute to the academic program of the School in several subjects and at several levels which will assist in the diversity and stability of our curriculum as well as the flexibility of staffing. I will give a brief introduction of the academic staff for the international program in 2018-19. We welcome all new staff and hope that they will have a long and successful association with the School.

Refurbishment Each subject area now has a number of dedicated classrooms in which to deliver the lessons. All of the classrooms are equipped with projectors which are linked via laptop to the internet. There are now two Science laboratories and a classroom for teaching theory. There is a combined Art and Design section to enable easy access to both areas for classes. The new ICT Lab is larger and more spacious. The courtyard area continues to be enhanced and it now contains a central area for eating and for presentations and assemblies. There are now areas set up for table tennis, volleyball, badminton, basketball, football and we have a swimming pool. The high school can now offer the types of facilities associated with other international high schools in the region.

News from last academic year A number of events took place last term after the publication of the final newsletter for 2017-18: Year 8 and 9 Otres Expedition (Saturday 16th June until Tuesday 19th June)

A group of 18 year students accompanied by Miss Masa, Miss Hannah, Mr Samnang and Mr Max have spent a wonderful 3 nights/3 days at Otres 2 Beach just outside Sihanoukville. They were lucky enough to stay at an excellent hotel called Otres Resort which is situated on the banks of the Ou Trojak Jet River – a 5 minute walk to the beach and well located for the variety activities planned.

Diary:

On day 1, we had an excellent morning at La-Oh Park where we went ziplining in the jungle canopies. We traveled from one platform to another, from tree to tree, and challenged ourselves through different games such as rope bridges, swinging logs, wood walkways, flying boards and of course zip-lines. We also spent time on the deserted beach there, playing football, posing for photographs, as well as looking out for crabs and other interesting wildlife.

Day 2. An expedition to Otres 2 Beach would not have been complete without a trip to the picturesque beach. Here the students (as well as staff!) competed against each other in the Otres Beach Olympics 2018. They carried out activities such as 100m sprint, long jump and gymnastics. We even had a paddle in the sea and enjoyed taking in the beautiful scenery.

Sihanoukville has a collection of other sights to explore including a large Khmer market and a Pagoda. Students and staff enjoyed touring around the local area in a coach and being given the opportunity to sample some of the local snacks.

On the final evening, we had a good old sing along by the pool and enjoyed eating pizzas and clapping the trip certificate winners.

Thank you to all the staff involved in making this trip possible. Thank you to the Principal, Mr Peter, for giving the Year 8 and Year 9 students the opportunity to take part in this worthwhile expedition.

Finally, thank you to our brilliant students for being fantastic ISSR High School ambassadors, you are a credit to the School and to yourselves.

End of term excursion Students in Years 9 -11 had a relaxing end to the year with a few rounds of mini-golf at Angkor Putt. Mr. Max
