Adventures of a Vatican AstronomerNo scientist is a Spock-like android; a scientist’s work is as intuitive, and just as full of human foibles, as a painting, a symphony,

or a prayer. Brother Guy will discuss being a plantary scientist at the Vatican, how he collects meteorites in Rome and his work in Arizona using the Vatican telescope. Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, is a Jesuit brother, Director of the Vatican Observatory and the President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation whose research studies meteorites and asteroids. Along with more than 200 scientific publications, he is the author of six popular astronomy books. In 2014 he received the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences for excellence in public communication in planetary sciences. To find out more and book please visit: https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/events-calendar/ - 2.30pm, Wednesday 21 August at Temple Hall, York St John University.

Amazing Attendance Prize up for Grabs! At Archbishop Holgate’s School we are always striving to raise our already high standards in order for each and every child to receive the best possible education. Our aim is for your child to reach their full potential and therefore increase their life chances and open up a whole new world of opportunities for their future. Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare your child for success both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behaviour and have a better chance of succeeding in school and in the future.When we return to school in September we intend to offer a prize draw for good attendance every term. Any child in school can win the prize by maintaining great attendance. Each student with 100% attendance at the end of the term will be rewarded with a golden ticket which will go into the draw to win the prize on offer. For our first term we are offering this Giant Toblerone. As you can see it is nearly as big as James! We look forward to seeing our students in school every day next term to be in with a chance of winning.

Visit to Askham Bryan College Opportunities FareLast Wednesday we took a group of Year 10 and 12 students to the Opportunities Fare at Askham Bryan College. The aim of the day was for students thinking about their transition from Year 11 and Year 13 and to look at a variety of opportunities available to them. The students were also able to attend various workshops ranging from Horticulture, Animal Care to Graphic Design. The event was well represented by other schools in and around York. Our students were exemplary throughout the day and we are proud that they represented our school in such a positive way. They also thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and have been asking if they can go again next year.

Year 11 NewsHuge congratulations to Erin Smith, 11MHo, who has beaten hundreds of young talented dancers and been successful at achieving a place in the Phoenix Youth Dance Academy; Erin is an incredibly gifted performer who I am confident we will see in the spotlight in the West End at some stage in her future. Well done Erin, we are extremely proud of you.

This Week’s Main School News

Allotment and Ecobrick UpdateThe growing of both the produce and the club has continued over the summer. We have been busy maintaining and harvesting the beds. Thanks go to all the regular club members who have been every week since September - brilliant work. Thanks also to the newcomers that have joined in this term, it’s been nice to see you - look out for notices in the autumn term. Continuing the thanks - to all those around school who have helped by thinking of us whenever there are ‘leftover’ crops, we have filled all our beds this year. Even more thanks go to the families who have helped us with manual work over the year and the recent addition of our new bench and picnic table. We enjoyed sitting around them to share the amazing strawberries! Here’s to next year and our plans to build a flowerbed with ecobricks. Thank you also to those who have been supplying their bricks since our news item in the spring. Look out for updates on these in the autumn. Enjoy the summer. (Mrs Clarke)

Musical SuccessCongratulations to Lauren Taylor (8Pl) on passing her Grade 3 Piano exam with a Merit and to Sabrina Pugh (8RGi) who passed her Grade 3 Piano.

Compassion CornerROHHADOn Monday lunchtime, five girls from 7Gr took part in a sponsored swim to raise money for ROHHAD; Rapid-onset Obesity, with Hypothalamic dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation (basically the organs inside the body don’t function properly). It is a rare condition and, as with many such conditions, the funding to find a cure or treatment depends on charitable donations. A huge well done to Sophie, Betsy, Emily-Sue, Imogen and Ruby (with great vocal support from Anna at the poolside and Mrs Smith as lifeguard) who raised over £120 between them. If you’d like to know more about the condition, or how to help raise funds, please go to www.rohhadassociation.com where you can see Iron Man (or Robert Downey Jnr) take part in the “Go Mad, Jump for ROHHAD” challenge.

Save your copper and silver coinsNext academic year we will again be doing our ‘Pennies for Pudsey’ and ‘Silver for Poppies’ ~ so start saving your pennies, tuppences, and five and ten pence coins. Thank you.

Old Sweatshirts and T-shirtsThe Cape Town Expedition 2020 are looking to take to South Africa any old school uniform from AHS, so if you have any sweatshirts or t-shirts that you will no longer need please bring them to Reception. Your donations will be gratefully received.

Summer Reading Challenge Years 7-9 “Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history . . . They will need literacy to cope with the flood of information they will find everywhere they turn. They will need literacy to feed their imaginations so they can create the world of the future . . .”This week the English department are launching their summer reading challenge with students in Years 7, 8 and 9. All students will be bringing a letter home with more information about the challenge and what it entails. Any support or encouragement you can offer this summer to keep them on top of their reading would be much appreciated. All resources can also be found on our school website at: https://archbishopholgates.academy/curriculum/subjects/english/resourcesFor a little inspiration, check out BBC Newsround’s 11 Books that Changed the World.

PE EnrichmentAs part of the School’s very first Enrichment Week the PE department will be running sporting activities for each year group. Activities will range from team games such as Football and Rugby to recreational activities including Danish Longball and Table Tennis. These activities will be delivered by a mixture of external coaches and Archbishop Holgate’s staff. Students have been informed of the plan for the week. Students must wear the correct AHS PE kit for their activities.

OF THE WEEK

Segue: a transition from one role, state, or condition to another (in music and film) move without interruption from one piece of music or scene to another.

@AHSSci: Mr Stone enjoys teaching!

Football SuccessFormer GCSE PE students Jack Clarke, Ben Godfrey and Harry Sheppeard will all be at Premier League clubs for the new season. Jack has only just signed for Tottenham Hotspur, Ben was promoted with Norwich City and Harry promoted with Sheffield United. Jack has since been loaned back to Leeds United for a season, but I am sure it won’t be long before we see them all feature on Match of the Day. Congratulations to all three on their success.
