Project Description
Your Students Tell us about your students. What are their needs? What do they look forward to at school? What challenges do they face in the classroom? (Limit of 150 words)
My students are inquisitive and eager to learn, with a range of ability levels. Many of my students need extra support from me or an aide to understand new concepts and be prepared to pass exams. I have a large class with over 30 students, so I am not always able to give my students personal assistance with their lessons. They look forward to our art class, when they have time to put away their books and exercise their creativity and personal expression. Art gives them the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences and to express themselves in new and different ways.
Your Project Describe the project’s purpose (what you are doing and why), and how you plan on using the funds. (Limit of 250 words)
I plan to use the grant funds to help my students paint a mural at our school. The subject of the mural will be a map of our community that includes local landmarks, native plants, and traditional Masi art motifs. Students will each choose a local landmarks or plant to include in our mural, based on their class learning or personal experiences. In the two months leading up to the mural painting, they will learn and practice basic drawing principles as they design their chosen symbol during art class, and then sketch it onto the mural wall. Each student will also give a short presentation to the class on why they chose this symbol, and how it represents our community. Finally, students will study traditional Masi artwork and create a Masi-inspired border for the mural. For this part of the mural, we have invited an artist to visit the class and explain how Masi art is made, and to guide the students in creating their own motifs for use in the mural. Painting the mural will take place once a week during September. The projects will end in a mural unveiling event, when the community will be invited to view the mural, and students will explain how the mural is representative of the community.

Your Impact What specific learning, skills, and/or experiences will your students gain as a result of this project? What will you achieve with these grant funds? (Limit of 150 words)
My goal for this mural is to help students express themselves through art, learn and demonstrate artistic techniques, and help beautify our school. Students are imaginative and need to express themselves creatively. This project will give students the opportunity to create a symbolic representation of their community. They will also learn artistic techniques and about their cultural traditions. I hope that this project will help my students feel more passionate about their community and find a new way to express themselves.
