ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

JAMES WOLFINGER MEMORIAL AWARD

Jim Wolfinger attended Palisades High School from 1971-1976. The summer before hissenior year, Jim ran in a race along the Delaware Canal. He collapsed and died during therace. That fall he was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.

The Wolfinger family presented the school with money to establish a memorial award.The award is presented annually to a cross country runner who possesses the outstandingqualities that Jim Wolfinger possessed: humility, dependability, integrity, courage,perseverance and scholarship. Lou Gonsalves, Jim’s coach, made the first presentation.

PALISADES HiGH SCHOOLLEE HESS MEMORIAL AWARD

Lee Hess was a Palisades student who was a member of the varsity wrestling team in1969 which was coached by David Stuempfle. In the spring of 1969, he was killed in atragic tractor accident. Money was raised by the community to establish a memorialaward. The Hess family also contributed to the fund.

The award is presented annually to the “most improved” wTestler. The recipient isselected by the wrestling coaches.

WALTER T. ROHRER - PALISADES SPORT BOOSTERS SCHOLARATHLETE AWARD

ELIGIBILITY

The scholarship grant shall consist of two monetary awards, one to a male and oneto a female in the Palisades senior class.

2. Consideration for the scholarship shall be without reference to race, sex, color, orcreed.

3. The scholarship may be used to pursue any full-time post-high school program inan accredited two or four year college/university.

4. Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:a) Senior male and female athletes who hold the highest class rank at the end

of the third marking period of his/her senior year.b) The male and female athletes must have lettered in at least two sports in

their senior year to be eligible (this also includes managers who havelettered).

c) Attended Palisades High School as full time students during their entirejunior and senior year.

WILLIAM STANLEY AWARD

This award is presented in memory of William “Bill” Stanley. Bill graduated fromPalisades in 1963. While at Palisades, Bill lettered in track and cross country. Bill setmany school and league records in both sports. Upon graduation from Palisades, Billmatriculated at Lafayette College in Easton. At Lafayette, Bill lettered in track and crosscountry and became a premier runner on the college level. Bill met an untimely death inan automobile accident in his junior year.

Preston Scoboria, Bill’s high school coach, and friends from the Palisades Communitycontributed money to establish a memorial award.

Each year the Palisades varsity coaches nominate and pick a recipient for this award. Theaward can be given to any Palisades varsity athlete who exhibits the qualities of courage,humility, and integrity.
