VET NEWS It has been a very busy time for our VET students so far this year! 2015 has seen the introduction of Certificate I Retail Services and Certificate I Business Services. So far both the Year 9 and 10 classes are enjoying the content taught by staff and see the real benefits of completing a VET Framework. Already five of ours students studying Retail Services have gained casual employment at Woolworths and Gloria Jeans in Ingleburn. It is fantastic to see that what students are learning in the classroom is helping them with their real world experiences outside of school.

It is great to see that many students are fulfilling requirements to complete their studies to attain a Certificate II in their chosen frameworks. Unfortunately, we do have a percentage of students that still need to complete their Units of Competency and Mandatory Work Placement hours. Work Placement is compulsory for all VET students in NSW who are undertaking an Industry Curriculum Framework course. It is an essential part of a student’s study as they are able to put in practise the skills and theory which they learn in the classroom and also gain first-hand experience of the industry. Furthermore, it may also lead to employment. Please note that if a student does not complete work placement they will not have the 2 units recognised by the BOSTES. This may mean that the students will not receive their Preliminary or HSC.

I look forward to seeing more great things happening in VET over the next few months. Friday 22 May is the cut-off date for VET staff to nominate a VET student in Year 12 for the Registered Training Organisation Awards. So far I have several nominations and finalists will be recognised at the Annual VET Awards Presentation on 17 August 2015 at Revesby Workers Club. So watch this space!!!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the VET staff who work tirelessly to ensure that our students have a positive experience in the classroom and helping students with attaining their certification in Frameworks studied. Without their dedication, VET would not run as efficiently as they do.

Till next time! Ms G. Koskinas

VET Coordinator

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATION 2015

Ingleburn High School commemorated the 100th

anniversary of ANZAC Day on 23-24 April.

The commemoration started on Thursday 23 April with our traditional ANZAC Day assembly. We were joined by Mr V. Vincent, member of Ingleburn RSL Club Ltd Board of Directors, and Mr J. Lees, Honorary Secretary—Ingleburn RSL Sub-Branch, who addressed the audience. The School Captains, Eleni Voudouris and Lana Kraichuk, read a commemorative address whilst the Prefects, Nicole Buhrmann and Kajol Kumar, read In Flanders Field and the Ode, respectively. A PowerPoint presentation was also shown which highlighted the sacrifices made by local diggers to Australia’s effort in WWI.

The commemoration continued on 24 April. Ingleburn High School organised a whole school activity with a goal to engage the students in a cross-curricular manner in the ANZAC Day commemorations. Students were placed in their English classes and had timetabled periods with different faculties around the school throughout the day. Each faculty presented a lesson to the students that was relevant to their Key Learning Area and that highlighted an aspect of the nature of WWI and the experiences of Australian soldiers. Additionally, students were shown WWI artefacts from an exhibit that was displayed in the school hall which were presented by a very engaging and knowledgeable expert on Australia and WWI. Students also had the opportunity to purchase a ‘ration pack’ on the day. It consisted of a sausage sizzle, a drink and an ANZAC biscuit. The profits from the day will go towards the completion of the ANZAC monument currently under construction at our school.

Based on the feedback received from students and staff, we believe that this was a very engaging and worthwhile activity for the students which allowed them to not only gain further understanding of the nature of WWI, but also to develop an empathetic understanding of the experiences of our soldiers who fought at Gallipoli.

YEAR 12 MODERN HISTORY AND YEAR 11 STUDIES OF RELIGION EXCURSION TO THE SYDNEY JEWISH MUSEUM

On Monday 18 May, Y12 Modern History and Y11 Studies of Religion went to the Sydney Jewish Museum on an excursion. The focus of the day for Y12 Modern History was to learn more about Nazi racial policy during WWII. They were given a seminar by one of the education officers at the museum, which was very insightful. The class also heard from a survivor of the Holocaust and went on a guided tour of the museum, which allowed the students to get a greater insight into the personal experiences of persecuted individuals during the Holocaust.

The focus of the day for Y11 Studies of Religion was to get a greater understanding of Judaism as a religion, which is one of the elective components of the Studies of Religion course. The students learnt about Nazi racial policies during WWII and were given a guided tour of the museum that pertained to the study of Judaism. Lastly, they were given a lecture about Judaism as a religious belief system.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and benefitted from this extra-curricular learning experience.

YEAR 11 AND 12 – GIRLS DO THE MATHS – UNSW

On Friday, 15 May, four Year 11 and four Year 12 Mathematics students went to the University of New South Wales to participate in the program “Girls Do The Maths”. The day was designed to give girls who are studying Mathematics or Mathematics Extension 1 ideas where the mathematics they learn in the class room can be applied in the outside world as well as a taste of what it's like to attend a large university campus.

The students were exposed to the three different types of Mathematics which can be studied: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics. Various presenters gave the girls glimpses into different career paths, from optimising airport flight traffic and cabin crews to cryptography and encoding sensitive data (like bank PINs), as well as the huge world of Statistics where research and analysis of data is the key to providing meaningful results and drawing conclusions.

A campus tour was an eye opener as the girls embarked on an adventure seeing where up to 50, 000 students study! They sat in on a lecture where over 400 students attended as well as saw the large student accommodation complexes which were on site.

The day was enjoyed by all, experiencing the joys of public transport to and from the uni (and laughing at Mr Noakes when he had to ask the bus driver to open the door after he forgot to "tap off" his Opal Card!!).

A big thanks to all the students to attended. A fun day had by all!

And remember, Mathematics is in everything!!

Thanks heaps. Mr P. Noakes

BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP GROUP NEWS

As an Alumni school of Beacon, this year has seen the formation of the Business Partnership Group. This group focuses on building connections between the school and business community. Our work still continues with Beacon as we both work together to provide real world experiences for our students in linking businesses with the curriculum taught in the classroom and offering many opportunities with the business world.

Our first Business Partnership Group Breakfast meeting took place on Tuesday 31 March. Here we were able to discuss with business representatives our vision and how businesses can help strengthen and achieve this along with us. It was a very positive morning and fantastic to see that businesses are keen to help our students achieve better results in and out of the classroom. It would be great to see more businesses involved, so if you are a local business or know of anyone who runs a business and would like to be involved in improving student opportunities and outcomes, please contact me on the school number 9605 1509.

There have been some really exciting events that along with Beacon have allowed our students to attend and help create opportunities for students while at school and also post school and wellbeing. Six of our Year 10 and 11 students attended the Komatsu Information Day on 13 May at their Fairfield Plant with Mr Dong. The day was targeted at showing students the skills and requirements which Komatsu Australia Management see as important when looking to hire Apprentices and Trainees. The day also involved a behind the scenes look of a multinational organisation which focus on supplying and supporting Komatsu Mining, Construction and Utility equipment in Oceania. Interested students were asked to leave their details for a week’s worth of Work Experience with the view of full time employment as either an Apprentice or Trainee. Later on in the year Cummins Australia will also be providing the same opportunities, so watch this space!

On Monday 18 May a unique opportunity was offered to six of our students to help promote the Happiness Cycle along with BMX World Champion Sam Willoughby on Channel Nine’s TODAY Show. Simon Thai, Maddison Ross, Annalise Helene, Rebekah Edwards, Ayjah-Mei Madar and Breanna Johannessen fought the chilly morning and along with me went to the Macarthur BMX Track at Elderslie where students got to see a behind the scenes live feed for the Today show and also appeared in front of the camera. I was really proud as to how the students conducted themselves and how good they all looked in front of the camera even with the Hot Air Balloon debacle!

The Happiness Cycle is a Coca Cola Australia initiative along with the Bicycle Network with an aim to raise awareness of teen obesity and lack of exercise. The initiative involved students attending workshops on the day where students par built their own bike. The most exciting part, students were able to take their built bike home along with a free helmet, lights and locks. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by students who attended on Wednesday 20 May at the Minto Sports Complex. I would also like to thank Mr Noakes and Ms Young who attended along with me on the day and helped students with building their bikes!

Please watch this space for more news and opportunities!!

ANTI-RACISM – A MESSAGE FROM THE ARCO

Ingleburn High School has a strong commitment to Multicultural Education, equity and equality. These beliefs permeate all of our school policies including our Anti-Racism Policy, the Cultural Diversity and Community Relations Policy, Multicultural Education in schools, the Aboriginal Education and Training Policy and the Complaints Handling Policy, amongst others. This ethos is embedded in our teaching practice and not only is it taught explicitly to students, but it also forms part of our expectations of the safe, respectful learners that attend Ingleburn High School.

Any member of the school community has the right to lodge a complaint and seek a favourable resolution if they have been the victim of racial vilification in the school context. The resolution of such complaints can be either formal or informal depending on the severity and frequency of the abuse. It is my duty as an Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) of Ingleburn High School to handle such complaints and to provide mediation, education and monitoring that leads to reduced recidivism of racial abuse in our school.

If any student experiences such vilification, they are encouraged to speak to their teacher and to see myself in the History, Languages and Music Faculty in BR0064. If you have any questions regarding our policies or the resolution process, please contact me through the school’s front office.

Mr D. Levkovski ARCO Representative

SUPPORT UNIT

Our Support Unit was lucky enough to attend a day on Sydney Harbour with Sailors with Disabilities earlier this term. SWD is a not-for-profit organisation. They encourage people with a disability or those in difficult circumstances to see things in a new way. By showing what's possible, they challenge society’s perception of those facing disability or disadvantage.

The students and staff all had a fantastic day being able to feel what it is like to sail on a yacht. The wind was up which enabled us to put the sails up for the first time. This was a new and exciting experience for some of our students.
