School Innovation Project
By exploring the ways in which robotics and coding can be implemented in the
classroom, we hope to deepen our understanding of how it can be utilized to
enhance our teaching.
Project Goals
Work together to plan cross-divisional inquiries related to robotics and coding
Deepen our understanding of how coding can be utilized to enhance our teaching
Address related challenges such as student engagement, differentiated instruction, and student voice/choice
Create a resource bank which can be shared with the rest of the staff
Increase the number of teachers utilizing iPads and robotics kits in future years
What is coding?
What is coding?
• “Code is the list of instructions given to any computer in order for it to perform the desired actions. Every time you switch on a PC, a mobile phone, a calculator, even a microwave, code is being run.”

Why should we care about coding??
• We live in a world that is becoming more reliant on technology every single day. Coding is becoming an essential job skill in more than just IT.
Coding in the Classroom
Robotics: Mindstorm EV3
• Grades 4-8• Creating scripts from computer (available in
French and English)• OR controlling from iPad• 5 kits at SIJ
Robotics: We Do
• Grades 1 – 3• Software available in French and English• 4 kits at SIJ

Lesson Ideas
Enhancing Project Based Learning
Purpose: To design, build, and program a working model for a real world recycling problem. In addition, students were required to demonstrate their working model and give a digital presentation about the engineering process from beginning to end.
Solution for cleaning the ocean, 5th grade project
EV3
Primary: We Do ShowcaseWe explored the progression in technology in 4 areas. We showed the differences in party line and land line telephones vs cell phones, radio shows vs HD flat screen TVs, slower autos vs high-tech food trucks, and brooms vs Roombas.
Engineering and Design: Sumobot competition
