CharaCter Words of the Month

You’ve probably heard these phrases a time or two whenever performance

is assessed and the barometer of public opinion is checked. “Perception

really is the reality.” “Don’t forget the big picture.” Or, how about, “You

can’t please all the people all of the time?”Such expressions play out in education in ways big and small. A school

district can rally committees that work long hours developing thoughtful

and challenging curriculum to support student success. But, if buses are

late and lunches are bad, and an unpleasant person makes for an unpleasant

experience, this then becomes reality for school administrators. This edition of the “Survey Spotlight” examines the student experience

here at Genesee Valley, the final area of the community perception

survey distributed last May. Some of our highest marks were gleaned

from questions covering athletics/co-curricular programs, technology,

transportation and the safety of our campus and students. Because these are

the activities that the public gets to see and experience, and where they can

witness our vibrant student body, they tend to hold a more positive view.

When asked whether GVCS curriculum and academics prepare students

to flourish and achieve, the community was slightly less enthusiastic. As

with the survey results in general, the response was a “yawn,” with answers

falling between no opinion and agree. Clearly, the positive scores in the

student experience portion of the survey were driven by co-curricular

activities and not so much from academic pride. The Board of Education has outlined very specific instructional goals for

the administrative team to increase performance in math and ELA on the

NYS Assessments and Regents exams. One key step is a renewed focus on

reducing the percentage of students missing crucial instructional time due to

absence or disciplinary reasons. Genesee Valley is strengthening student support through math and

ELA intervention. AmeriCorps tutoring is being developed to assist with

homework and test preparation. The district continues to bolster its electives

and college courses, now offering 45 higher education credits. An initiative

is under way to increase educational field trips and develop meaningful

student internships in the community. We hope to create a “wrap-around”

program that would provide supervision before and after school for those

struggling to find adequate child care. In the next Jag News, I will share an update on the significant progress

already achieved in direct response to the Board of Education goals for

the 2013-14 school year, and to what we have heard from you through the

perception survey. We are working diligently to ensure the community is aware of and

involved in our educational pursuits both inside and outside the classroom.

GVCS strives for high marks consistently across all facets. If a district is

healthy, with positively engaged leaders and teachers, the community will be

strongly optimistic about its children.

By Carol A. McCarville, Director of Curriculum and Assessment

April 1st marks the first day of adminis-tration of the New York State Assessments in English Language Arts (see chart). This year, New York State provided an examination schedule that allowed the freedom to schedule spring break in be-tween the administration of the ELA and Math assessments. Once again, the assess-ments will be administered during a very short window of time (3 days for each content test) and will occur on the same dates for all grade levels. State mandates have left the District no flexibility in the schedule and again, ALL students in New York State will take the same tests on the same days!

While it will be challenging to get students “in the groove” for a state assess-ment, here’s how parents can help:

• Be sure your child is well-rested, especially the night before the exam.

• Insist on breakfast, whether at home or at school; food is fuel for the brain and body!

• As much as possible, maintain a regular schedule in the days before the test.

NYS Grade 3-8 Assessments to Begin April 1st By Carol A. McCarville, Director of Curriculum and Assessment

April 1st marks the first day of administration of the New York State Assessments in English Language Arts (see chart); this year New York State provided us with an examination schedule that allowed us the freedom to schedule spring break in between the administration of the ELA and Math assessments. Once again, the assessments will be administered during a very short window of time (3 days for each content test) and will occur on the same dates for all grade levels. State mandates have left the District no flexibility in schedule and again, ALL students in New York State will take the same tests on the same days!

• Be sure your child is well-rested, especially the night before the exam. • Insist on breakfast, whether at home or at school; food is fuel for the brain and body! • As much as possible, maintain a regular schedule in the days before the test.

If your child seems anxious or nervous about the assessment, assure your child that the assessment is simply a chance to “show what they know”. It is impossible to fail these assessments as they are a measure of progress from year to year. Please do let your child’s teacher know if he/she seems stressed over the state assessment; teachers can help calm those “test taking nerves”, too!

We do ask that parents avoid scheduling medical and dental appointments during state assessments as the State Education Department has limited the number of “make up days”. If you have an appointment scheduled that cannot be changed, please let your child’s teacher know as soon as possible. Should your child become ill on a scheduled test date, please DO keep them home. Students perform their best when healthy and well-rested!

If you have any questions regarding the state assessments or the schedule (see chart), please feel free to contact the building principal or myself at (585) 268-7900 ext. 1131. The times noted below are general estimates; please contact your child’s teacher for more specific times.

The Elementary school is a great place to be! This year, we have started handing out rewards called “Pats on the Back” to teachers who put extraordinary effort into student or family successes. At first this idea was something handed out just by me to teachers. As the year has progressed, more and more teachers are recognizing their peers for out-standing work and more “Pats on the Back” are given by teachers to other teachers than from administration. This marks a great change in culture that is good for our kids! We are ready for this idea to spread even further! If you would like your student’s teacher recognized for outstanding work, please contact us in the Main Office and we will get a “Pat on the Back” to you to present to your child’s teacher! We will also be recogniz-ing those parents who regularly go above and beyond to make GV the best place to be! If a parent receives a “Pat on the Back”, it can be returned for a variety of rewards (I will shovel walks, scrape cars, or serve a lunch to you and your child in the cafeteria!) Please be on the lookout for GV teachers, parents, or staff who give of themselves to improve the culture here. Together we can have fun and learn at the same time!

By Alan SalyerMrs. Horne’s senior Participation in Government class led an

incredibly successful non-perishable food drive on December 19th and 20th. The set goal for the food drive was 800 cans and with an amazing 1,262 cans, the seniors reached above and beyond their goal. All of the food items were donated to the Angelica and Belmont food pantries to help families in need during the holidays. The days of can collection were enjoyed by all, with the canned soup mascot roaming the halls and encouraging kids to help the cause, and prizes awarded to the students who brought in the most cans. The students had an amazing time putting together the food drive by scheduling can pickups in Advisements, figuring out a prize system, making posters, and fine-tuning details. The students agree that this was a great way to end the week before holiday break, and Mrs. Horne hopes to make this an annual function because of the great benefit to our food pantries, and the great learning experience for the students putting the drive together.

The PBIS Team at GV has been reas-sembled and reenergized this year!

PBIS, short for Positive Behavior In-terventions and Supports, is based on the fundamental idea of teaching behavioral expectations to students and reinforcing them for making positive choices.

Our efforts so far this year have been focused on analyzing our current system by gaining feedback from teachers and students, observing student behavior in specific areas and researching PBIS at other schools. We found many areas of positivity already in place around our school! We also found areas for improve-ment and have creative ideas to increase effectiveness.

Our goal for the remainder of the year is to update logistics and prepare for next year. We will be creating activities for students in grades K-6 to participate in creating school-wide expectations that are centered around our motto “Be Respon-sible, Be Respectful, Be Ready to Learn”.

We are looking forward to introducing an exciting approach and a new PBIS mas-cot at the annual Welcome Back Assembly in September!
