CSUN/NCOD Scholarships of 2008

Applications for the CSUN/NCOD Scholarships mentioned below are being accepted at this time:

The following criteria for each of these ten CSUN/NCOD scholarships will be considered by the Selection Committee in evaluating applications of those who submit applications.

San Fernando Lions Club Scholarship 1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement is 2.50. 2. Applicants must be a deaf senior and be planning to graduate during the current year. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Highest quality scholastic, personal, and community achievement. b. Expressed interest in promoting the CSUN/NCOD Alumni Association. c. Demonstrated leadership capabilities. d. High moral character and good citizenship. e. Expressed interest in a professional career. 4. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

Herbert W. Larson Scholarship Award

1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is 2.50. 2. Student must currently be a deaf junior or senior. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Demonstrated leadership qualities.

b. Expressed interest in working with others in a leadership capacity after graduation. (Your application must indicate how you intend to use your leadership skills after college and how you intend to use the scholarship itself.)

c. High moral character and good citizenship. 4. Applicants may receive this scholarship only once.

Jules Spizzirri Scholarship

1. The minimum Graduate CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement is 3.00. 2. Applicant must be a deaf post-baccalaureate student. 3. Must have completed a minimum of 6 units of graduate work at CSUN during the previous

semester and must be registered in at least 6 units currently. 4. Must be majoring in Education with an intent to receive a Master's degree. 5. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Strong academic performance and community achievement. b. Demonstrated leadership capabilities. c. High moral character and good citizenship. d. Expressed interest in a professional teaching or counseling career. 6. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

Micki Zinkovich Scholarship

1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement is 2.50. 2. A deaf student who has completed a minimum of 12 units of undergraduate work or 9 units of

graduate work at CSUN in the previous semester. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Strong academic performance and involvement in the field of Radio-Television,

Theater, Media, Journalism, and/or other related field at CSUN. b. Demonstrated leadership capabilities. c. High moral character and good citizenship. 4. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

Brenda Cranmer Scholarship

1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is 3.00. 2. Must currently be a deaf junior or senior. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Demonstrated leadership qualities. b. Expressed interest in a professional career as a teacher or counselor working with deaf

or hard of hearing students. c. Community involvement. d. High moral character and good citizenship. 4. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

Outstanding Freshman Award

1. The minimum Grade Point Average from high school and from the first semester at CSUN is 3.00. 2. Must be a recent deaf high school graduate and currently a first year student at CSUN. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Above average score(s) on college entrance exams. b. Demonstrated potential to succeed academically and plan to receive a Bachelor's degree. c. Successful participation and effective leadership in student government, clubs, athletics,

drama, and/or other special activities during high school. d. Demonstrated ability to get along with others; effective communication and leadership

skills. 4. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

Debbie Gonzales Interpreter Scholarship

1. Applicant must be currently participating as a mentor in NCOD’s Mentoring Program. 2. Must be able to explain the protocol of classroom interpreting, and the policies of NCOD.

3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Demonstrated skill in sign language interpreting. b. Commitment to improve skills through professional development. c. Ability to provide positive feedback to mentee in an effective yet compassionate manner. d. An exemplary practitioner in the interpreting community. 4. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

Virginia Hughes Student Interpreter Scholarship

1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement is 2.00. 2. Applicant must meet normal CSUN admissions criteria or currently be enrolled in CSUN classes. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Demonstrated skill in sign language interpreting. b. Experience in sign language interpreting. c. Positive attitude toward improving interpreting skills.

Faye Wilkie Interpreter Scholarship

1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement is 2.00. 2. Applicant must meet normal CSUN admissions criteria or currently be enrolled in CSUN classes. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Demonstrated skill in sign language interpreting. b. Experience in sign language interpreting. c. Positive attitude toward improving interpreting skills. d. Being a child of deaf parents. e. Intent to pursue a career in the field of deafness. 4. Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

CSUN/NCOD Alumni Scholarship 1. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement is 2.50. 2. Applicant must be a Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing student pursuing either undergraduate or graduate

study. 3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this

scholarship: a. Dedication to the CSUN/NCOD Alumni Chapter. b. Creativity in getting Alumni to work with students and vice versa. c. Strong work ethic and willingness to work proactively. d. Use of effective communication and leadership skills. e. Expressed interest in taking a leadership role within the CSUN/NCOD Alumni Chapter in

the future.

(GPA) requirement is 3.00 for undergraduates. 3. Outstanding academic achievement at CSUN. 4. A minimum of 30 units of undergraduate work must

be earned and completed at CSUN. 2) Outstanding Leadership Award 1. Students considered for this award must be enrolled

full-time (12 units for undergraduates and 9 units for graduates).

2. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average

(GPA) requirement is 2.00 for undergraduates and 3.00 for graduates.

3. Some of the qualities that will be taken into

consideration in selecting the recipient of this award are:

a. Demonstrated leadership capability; b. Willingness to assume responsibility; c. Ability to facilitate group action and interaction; d. Interest and participation in CSUN organizations, clubs and programs; e. Willingness to work to improve his/her leadership skills. 3) Outstanding Service Award 1. 5) Outstanding Arts Award 1. Students considered for this award must be enrolled

a. Interest and participation in CSUN Fine Art events;

b. Application of artistic skills for the betterment of the CSUN and NCOD community; c. Willingness to work with discipline and dedication to further his/her artistic talent.

6) Outstanding Interpreter Service Award 1. This award is open to hourly interpreters of the National Center on Deafness.

2. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consideration in selecting the recipient of this award are:

a. Positive attitude and superior work ethic; b. Willingness to work to improve his/her

interpreting skills and/or understanding of deaf students;

c. Ability to work well with deaf students; d. Good work record and dependability.

7) Outstanding Notetaker Service Award 1. This award is open to hourly notetakers of the National Center on Deafness. 2. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consid- eration in selecting the recipient of this award are: a. Positive attitude and superior work ethic; b. Willingness to work to improve his/her notetaking

and/or sign language skills; c. Ability to work with deaf students; d. Good work record and dependability. 8) Outstanding Captioning Service Award 1. This award is open to hourly captionists of the

National Center on Deafness. 2. Some of the qualities that will be taken into

consideration in selecting the recipient of this award are:

a. Positive attitude and superior work ethic; b. Willingness to work to improve his/her captioning

skills; c. Ability to work with deaf and hard of hearing

students; d. Good work record and dependability. 9) Outstanding Tutorial Service Award 1. This award is open to hourly tutors of the National Center on Deafness. 2. Some of the qualities that will be taken into consider- ation in selecting the recipient of this award are: a. Positive attitude and superior work ethic; b Willingness to improve his/her tutoring skills; c. Ability to work and communicate with deaf

students at a language level meaningful to all participants;

d Good work record; is punctual and dependable; e. High quality of tutoring that enables students to

achieve success by the transfer of learning from one situation to another;

f. Knowledgeable and proficient in the subject area.

10) Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award 1. This award is open to members of the faculty and

staff of California State University, Northridge. This award is not open to members of the faculty and staff of the NCOD.

2. Some of the qualities that will be taken into

consideration in selecting the recipient of this award: a. Interest in and/or participation with deaf students

at CSUN; b. Ability to work with deaf students; c. Willingness to work to improve his/her sign

language skills and/or understanding of deaf students; d. Willingness to encourage greater participation of

deaf students in CSUN/NCOD activities. e. Respect for and understanding of the learning

modes of deaf students; facilitation of student learning in an equal access environment.

11) Humanitarian Award 1. This award is open to all CSUN deaf and hearing

students. 2. A student considered for this award must be enrolled

full-time (12 units for undergraduate and 9 units for graduate).

3. The minimum CSUN cumulative Grade Point Average

(GPA) requirement is 2.00 for undergraduate and 3.00 for graduate.

4. Some of the qualities that will be taken into

consideration in selecting the recipient of this award are: a. Promotion of mainstreaming and interaction

between deaf and hearing students at CSUN; b. Involvement in one or more of the areas

mentioned below to increase interaction between deaf and hearing students. Areas are:

1) Academic 2) Athletic 3) Community 4) Social 5) Arts c. Service to the University and community above

and beyond academic achievement; d. Evidence of high moral character and good

citizenship; e. Willingness to volunteer.
