School Board President - Steve Bryant Congratulations to the class of 2019 and welcome to the class

of 2032. Our seniors this year accumulated more awards and recognition than any other class and in doing so lead their fellow students to new heights as well. In the classroom, on the athletic field and in external associations our students are leaders.

While the 2019 year has ended our staff is busier than ever preparing for the coming year. All our elementary schools will now host Pre-K through 5th grade, siblings will be able to go to

school together longer and our students will not have to move to new facilities as often. Parents will be more familiar with administration and staff for longer periods and our staff will have more time to work with students. The consolidation of elementary dual language programs will allow for an increased focus on staff and curriculum and the Leadership Academy will provide students with new skills for their future.

To the parents of our incoming students, please get to know the staff at our schools, public education is a partnership between our community and your students. Take the time to know what is happening at the campus and in your student’s classroom. Read to your children and let them read to you, this skill is the basis of an education.

I hope that everyone has an exceptional summer and will be ready to start with a bang in August.

CAST Lead High School to Open Fall 2020

East Central Independent School District will open a new school, CAST Lead High School, in August 2020. The Centers for Applied Science and Technology (CAST)

is a network of tuition-free public schools preparing students for college and careers through experiential learning. CAST schools offer a combination of blended learning, project-based learning, and work-based learning, freeing teachers to act as coaches and guides, with class time structured around research, labs, and offsite experiences in the workplace and local community. Open to all Bexar County students, the network includes high schools CAST Tech, CAST STEM and CAST Med, opening in August 2019, and the Advanced Learning Academy. Founded by Charles Butt and H-E-B in partnership with area industries, CAST schools aim to graduate students with marketable skills by exposing them to careers that match their interest and fortify them with transferable college credits to jumpstart their higher education goals. All career-focused high schools partner with industry and higher education partners in the design of its pathways and course offerings. Higher education partners include Palo Alto College, San Antonio College, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M University-San Antonio, the University of the Incarnate Word and UT Health. CAST Lead will partner with industry leaders, with initial partners including H-E-B, Whataburger, Optiv Security, Freeman, J&S Audio Visual, Grupo La Gloria, the CE Group, Visit San Antonio, Circa Destination Management, and Phillips Entertainment. At a press conference on May 28, H-E-B Public Affairs Manager Julie Bedingfield presented the school district with a $2 million check from H-E-B and the Charles Butt Charitable Foundation. The startup funds will help the district prepare the John Glenn campus to serve as a standalone CTE school and support the hiring of a principal and small team throughout the 2019-2020 planning year.

CAST Lead will be a career-themed high school that will connect students to leadership and management positions in the retail, hospitality and tourism, and e-commerce industries. Retail leadership will allow students to explore the world of retail management through product development, customer intercepts, package engineering and organizational development. Hospitality and tourism will span four segments of industry: food and beverage, travel and tourism, lodging, and recreation. This sector generates over $14 billion dollars annually in San Antonio. Students will have the opportunity to explore travel and tourism through the lens of culinary arts, hotel management, travel, and hospitality services. E-commerce students will learn how to lead and adapt to changes in the sector, explore marketing trends through social media and the internet, as well as study user interface and user experience. It is thought to be the first e-commerce course pathway in the state. All three pathways will culminate in a practicum experience with local employers, giving students the ability to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world environment. An industry advisory board established this summer will work with school leaders to create the course pathways and map out ways to connect students with internship and job shadowing opportunities. We are looking forward to the exciting opportunities CAST Lead will bring our students and community. CAST Lead Principal is Dr. Wendy Fuller.

Message from Roland Toscano, ECISD Superintendent of Schools

Dear East Central District Community,

The 2018-2019 school year flew by and we are thankful for another safe and productive year for our staff, students and community. As we have come to expect, our students represented us well at the local, state and national level in all academic and extracurricular areas. Thanks to the community for passing the 2016 Bond, the 2018-2019 school year saw the opening of the Gary Patterson Center for the Performing Arts, Tradition Elementary, and in the

fall, PreK centers around the District. I hope everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy the new facilities. They are remarkable and we are very thankful to have them.

East Central ISD collaborated with stakeholders over the last two years to develop a framework for implementing an accountability system based on local community values. The Community Based Accountability System (CBAS) initial report was released last October. Currently, staff is working on the second CBAS report which will be released this fall. We look forward to update the community on the progress the District has made.

As we look forward to next year, we are proud to share the exciting news that CAST Lead High School opens in August 2020. Founded by Charles Butt and H-E-B in partnership with area industries, CAST schools aim to graduate students with marketable skills by exposing them to careers that match their interests. With the $2 million start up funds from H-E-B and the Charles Butt Charitable Foundation, the District will prepare the John Glenn Campus to serve as a standalone Career and Technical Education high school, and will hire a principal and small team to work and plan throughout the 2019-2020 school year. We eagerly anticipate the great opportunities our new partnerships will afford our students and community.

SUMMER@ECISD was a huge success and we appreciate everyone who took advantage of those student enrichment activities. In addition, we’re excited to share that ECISD will provide free breakfast, lunch and end-of-day meals for every child in grades Pre-K through 5th and free end-of-day meals for all middle school students and students involved in after school activities at the high school. This was made possible by the exceptional financial stewardship by our child nutrition department. To further remove barriers so every child has access to a quality education, ECISD will have after school child care programs available at all elementary schools in collaboration with Be A Champion, Inc. and YWCA After School Challenge.

As always, we’re looking forward to the start of the new school year and all the excitement and success it will bring for our students, staff and community. #ECPROUD!

The Architecture, Construction Managanagement and Engineering Mentorship Program had a very successful year. Students involved in ACE create a project each year to present to a board of certified engineers, architects and project managers in the spring. This year the team was fortunate to have an actual “client.” They interviewed Mr. Mark Oppelt, director of the Land Heritage Institute, who asked students to create a S.T.R.E.A.M. Center to provide a location for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art/Architecture, and Math based learning for students throughout Bexar County on this site. Students were asked to re-purpose an existing Quonset Hut for a multi-purpose testing, experimenting and learning building, create a campsite with dining area, and to redesign the entrance to the property.

The presentation was held on May 2 at the UTSA downtown campus. They, along

with 13 other schools, gave their ideas for new projects to the panel of judges. The project was very well accepted and the comments on their work was very positive.

The end of the year ACE Banquet was held on May 21 at the Convention Center. EC had five seniors who attended the banquet and two of those seniors were awarded scholarships. Angelina Luna received a $4000 scholarship and Kyle Bryant received a $5000 scholarship. Both of these students were very integral to the project development. They were also two of the presenters of the project earlier in May. Other presenters were Miguel Valdez, Hunter Campbell and Isacc Gutierrez.

This year’s program had anywhere from 16 to 24 participants and ended with a very solid 16 who were involved in the whole development from September to the end in May. Through involvement in this program students learned about the areas Engineering, Architecture and

ECHS Architecture, Construction and Engineering Program ExcelsConstruction Management in order to make more informed decisions on their career of choice.

Thank you to mentors who came twice a month after school to work with students on understanding the different areas they were working with and helped to develop the presentation. They were: Mr. William “Mac” Gleason-SEA, Mr. Doug Nunnelley- FA Nunnelley Construction, Mr. Derek Sparling- Skansa USA Bldg., Mr. Shane Javernick- City of SA TCI, Mr. Thom Robey- Robey Architecture. These people all give of their own time to come and help mentor our students in their areas of specialty.

If you are interested in getting your child involved in this program, you can speak with Mrs. Vicki Watts about it, or your child can go to the organizational meeting that is held in September each year. School sponsors are: Mr. Andrew Gomez, Mr. Jonathan Kavanagh, and Mrs. Rill Pruski.

ECISD’s Park Place Texas Parks Wildlife Co-op Grant Goals:• Inspire the next generation of stewardship of public lands in Texas.• Support Texas high school students with outdoor practicum experiences related to graduation endorsement plans and career interests that can lead to environmentally responsible behaviors.• Increase attendance numbers of under-represented high school and middle school students on Texas Parks and Wildlife public lands.• Introduce and inspire ECISD students to participate in outdoor recreational activities on local public lands.• Use leadership experiences in Texas State and National Parks to launch new youth volunteering and civic engagement opportunities in local parks and public lands.

Park Place

“Congratulations!” May 1st started with an award letter and a press release from the Texas Parks and Wildlife headquarters in Austin. The news highlighted East Central ISD’s “innovative outdoor leadership program for high school students” and added a $50,000 investment in Service Learning thus ensuring the expansion of opportunities for multiple campuses and grade levels to engage in recreation, conservation, and career exploration on public lands. Over the course of the next two years, more than 75 high school students will continue to complete leadership training at two Texas treasures: Big Bend National Park and Big Thicket National Preserve. Secondary students will complete service learning projects and environmental science labs at five state parks with Martin Dies Jr. State Park as the premier partner and location for endorsement plan experiences. Locally, secondary students will learn the basics of mountain biking while maintaining trails at Land Heritage Institute, Govt. Canyon, and participating in kayaking on a stretch of Texas Parks and Wildlife’s “Paddling Trails” while contributing to the removal of invasive plants/macro waste management along Mission Reach. Secondary students will mentor elementary students at Salado and Oak Crest as both campuses establish outdoor classrooms and “park place” campus areas. Sinclair, Harmony, Pecan Valley, and Tradition elementary will be supported in East Central’s deepening support and involvement for San Antonio’s Earth Day, an official Fiesta event. Additionally, three district-wide “Service Days” at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center will be open to students, parents, relatives, and faculty with information related to conservation, water quality, and native plants. Legacy principal Nicole Lewis admits, “It’s good for students to participate in these outdoor experiences and it’s good for adults to see and experience these activities with the students. Students are different outside and I can see the experiences pull them forward into careers they are interested in as well as clarifying endorsement plan conversations.”

Legacy 2023 TXGearUp students are the first ECISD students to kayak down Mission Reach “Paddling Trails.” Students and faculty completed a one-mile river cleanup facilitated by Mission Reach Adventures and San Antonio River Authority. Students followed the pillars from the Department of the Interior for youth engagement on public lands: Play, Learn, Serve, Work. Kayaking lessons and navigating through the river shoots was both challenging and thrilling. The catch of the day turned out to be a TV screen found by Dylan, who revealed he wants to be a Game Warden and is looking forward to starting his endorsement plan at ECHS next year.

EC School FoundationThe Mission of the East Central School Foundations is to develop

and expand educational opportunities for students by providing financial support and community involvement.

All donations to the East Central School Foundation serve the students of East Central ISD by: helping to provide for basic needs via our District Social Service Department, enrichment experiences through innovative and creative Teacher Mini Grants and Scholarships to aide students attending Colleges and Universities

The 2018-19 Foundation Board of Directors are: Joe Ritterhouse, Mary Jo Dylla, Barry Stevens, Don Barnett, Carlos Constantino, Mark Blankenship, Mary Beth Fisk, Gloria Lamascus and Gretchen Stepke.

At the annual public meeting held September 15, 2018, the Board of Directors generously voted to add $5000 for summer enrichment programs for at risk students, award $101, 799.89 in Teacher Mini Grants and contribute $2986.54 to the Barry Stevens ExCites Scholarship.

Sixty-two applications were submitted to the East Central School Foundation for Teacher Mini Grant requests totaling $308,477.96. Each application was carefully studied and discussed several times by a committee of reviewers with emphasis on increasing student achievement and engagement, sustainability, and high impact while enhancing the implementation of TEKS. Through the commitment and generosity of the East Central School Foundation, 30 mini grants were funded for a total of $ $101,799.89. Congratulations to all of the educators on your mini grant award. Thank you for your creativity and commitment to providing enriching experiences for the children of East Central ISD.

This year the Barry Stevens ExCites Scholarship generously awarded $3500 each to the following students:

1. Kayla Ramirez, who plans to attend San Antonio College for a certification in nursing so she can begin working in the field, earn an income and eventually continue her education to become a doctor. She hopes to work with children.

2. Preston Hickman plans to attend Lincoln Tech College in Grand Prairie, Texas for a career in welding.

3. Cierra Gutierrez plans to attend Palo Alto for a job as a dental hygienist and possibly pursue furthering her education to become a dentist in the future.

Through the amazing donation of time and energy of the EC School Foundation Committee, the 2019 Gala held April 6th was a hit. Fifty tables were purchased by generous district, business and community members who enjoyed great food, fellowship, music, dancing, a fun raffle, plus live and silent auctions. The proceeds from this event after expense were $71,956. Proceeds will fund 2019-20 LeRoy

School Board Meeting Dates - July 18, August 15, September 19

Sinclair’s Dual Language dancers led by Mrs. Ravelo and Mrs. Mendiola have been in the lime-light all year long! Dancers performed for the East Central School Board and Sinclair’s Literacy Night. Region 20 invited them to perform twice this year for the World Language Conference and the Statewide ESC TEKs Resource System Conference. During Sinclair’s Service Learning Project, dancers performed on stage at Earth Day, an official Fiesta Event held at Woodlawn Lake. Not only did students dance—they were able to help introduce, Mayor Ron Nirenberg, talk with him and meet Miss Fiesta! @FiestaSA and @MySAWS made them superstars with thousands of views as they exclaimed “Viva Fiesta!” Students ended the year practicing for Sinclair’s Talent Show and will be moving to a new home at Salado next year! The students and Mrs. Ravelo and Mrs. Mendiola have done an excellent job in representing Sinclair and East Central!
