April 24, 2009 Dear Parent or Guardian, Your student is about to embark upon an in-depth study of Holocaust Literature in English class. We will begin by reading Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel’s Night, a text that describes Wiesel’s first-hand experience of living through the Holocaust and surviving life in concentration camps. We will also be reading historical texts, poems, short stories, and the graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman. In addition, I would like to show the DVD of Schindler’s List, a film which presents Oskar Schindler and his efforts to save the lives of more than 1,100 Jewish people during the Holocaust. This film is rated R; students must have signed parental permission forms before they will be allowed to watch the film. I have included a film review of Schindler’s List for your use. Students who do not have permission slips will be given an alternate reading assignment. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Attached is the reading contract for our Holocaust Literature unit. Please take a moment to look over it and to discuss it with your student.
