Aloha!

We hope you found our inaugural issue detailing the Hawaii state elevator permitting process informative! The wet and windy weather of the past few months has wreaked havoc on our island grids. That’s why we identified “power” as a critically important topic and wanted to shed more light on this issue. We also introduce a company called Power Shaver which provides the only viable solution we are aware of: enhancing the quality of the power that ultimately feeds your building’s electronic equipment.

We will continue to distribute future versions of “Stay Ahead” on a quarterly basis, covering topics such as elevator and escalator safety, updates on Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) equipment installations, Schindler InTruss escalator modernization (schindler.com/intruss-us), and our tech-forward suite of Schindler Ahead products (schindler.com/stay-ahead-us).

Thank you for choosing Schindler.

Sincerely,

Stay AheadPower Problems in Paradise

Did you know that Hawaii has one of the worst supplies of continuous power among the 50 states, and that our power supply is often compared to that of third world countries? Hawaii ranked 48th in a 2018 study conducted by the U.S. Energy Information Administration which evaluated the 50 states on factors such as price, grid reliability and renewable energy.*

I’ve spent nearly a decade in the elevator industry across cities such as San Francisco and San Diego and rarely, if ever, did we encounter power fluctuations that were substantial enough to disrupt elevator performance. However, across the Hawaiian islands we regularly see power fluctuations like spikes, brown outs, and outages that affect elevators.

The Hawaii Energy Company (HECO) allows for a 15% fluctuation in voltage they supply to buildings, but even 10% could permanently damage a control board, variable frequency drive, or fuse inside the controller, in addition to impacting general reliability of your vertical transportation equipment. This can result in thousands of dollars in repair costs.

HECO emphasizes that building managers should proactively protect their equipment with conditioning or other devices to alleviate the impact of power spikes or drop outs.

Schindler has recently learned of a power conditioning device called Power Shaver (powershaver.com) that has delivered positive results and thousands of dollars in power-related savings for buildings around the state.

By providing this extra layer of protection to your your building, we anticipate that Power Shaver will reduce callbacks from power-related faults, save you money on energy usage, and increase the lifespan of your investments across elevators and other electronic building equipment. Power Shaver is offering preferred pricing on the cost of product installation when you mention the Schindler Hawaii newsletter.**

The microprocessors in your desktop computers, smart phones and other electronic devices all run on highly sensitive chips and boards that must be protected by surge protectors and unplugged during storms to prevent damage – your elevator equipment is no different (only much, much larger!). Elevators, new, old and modernized alike are large investments to your building. Do not expose them to hazardous conditions that can result in permanent damage, a drag on reliability and performance, and increased cost of ownership. Be informed, be protected, and always be safe.

*www.usnews.com; 14-May-2018**Our endorsement is, in part, based on meetings with Power Shaver representatives, feedback from elevator consultants, and testimonial from Power Shaver customers. We have not and will not receive financial compensation from Power Shaver for this promotion. Please conduct the necessary due diligence to ensure that the Power Shaver product is the right solution for your building needs and desired outcomes.

“Our world is filled with increasingly sensitive devices...that contain precise circuitry and micro-processors. They are easily affected by

power quality disturbances, such as surges, sags, or interruptions...[and] by external factors such as weather.”
